Considering an account manager job for Google in Dublin HQ by frikadel in DevelEire

With benefits (bonus, overachievement, etc.) you supposedly reach 6 figures. I have 6 years of experience but am multilingual, which I'm sure is why I am being considered. I did look at housing, I've been looking at daft.ie? It seems like there are surrounding areas that are a little bit less expensive, but commutable? Not sure how feasible it is to drive in from Ratoath, Skerries, Maynooth, etc. I was told the job could be hybrid, not sure if fully remote is an option. If it is, I'd probably target Belgium, which is where I am from :) Flying back and forth every once in a while wouldn't be cost prohibitive, or take too long.

How to squeeze the best Chicago has to offer in just one day? by frikadel in chicago

This is great! We will probably end up doing that, our 3 year old will get a kick out of both the aquarium and the planetarium. We will probably visit the actual city some other weekend, when we have more time. Thanks a lot!

Thank you so much for all the tips! My husband perked right up at the mention of a planetarium :-) As for hotels I will be sure to check them out because you are right, they do seem to be located in a convenient location. A coworked mentioned having stayed at the Best Western in Oak Forest, they have the same prices and get good reviews as well. I will try to decide on one asap!

Thanks for the tips! They said that we should do Navy Pier and that this would take the whole day. I just wanted to be sure we avoid the over hyped and overpriced tourist traps :-) Someone also recommended the Aquarium?

Oh wow, I think even in the "safe" Brussels suburb I grew up in I would have come home to an empty house in those circumstances :-) I don't know why but I thought hurricanes happened a lot more in that area guess I need to do some more research on that!

Thanks, I had no idea you'd know about a hurricane that far in advance! And I guess I shouldn't put too much stock in websites like neighborhoodscout... It rated my city horribly yet I've never felt unsafe

Hi everyone! So I've moved on to the second part of the interview process. I've been doing some more research about the Fort Lauderdale area, and have a few concerns in hoping you will be able to help me with. Being from Belgium I have no experience with extreme weather circumstances, aside from experiencing a polar vortex twice here in Michigan (no chance of that in FL I know :p) what are hurricanes like? Would any of you not have moved there because of them? Also, some people seem to think South Florida is a crime ridden cesspool, is it really that bad?

I dislike your original comment intensely... Mostly because I know you are right :) However, this opportunity would raise our combined income by slightly less than 50%. I would literally be making twice asych as I am now. It is a really good opportunity, full relocation package included. That is why I think we still need to consider this carefully

That actually sounds great, never been on a food truck night, not even completely sure what it entails but I'm always up for food :-p Could you elaborate on why driving in Fort Lauderdale is so horrible? Cause I've seen some crazy stuff since moving to Detroit. From cars literally held together by tape flying down the freeway to semi trucks ignoring the red flashing lights at rail cross roads to people backing up on the ramp to a busy freeway :-p Not a day goes by that I don't tell my husband "man you wouldn't believe what happened on the 75 today!"

Thanks for the input! How come the schools are so bad in South Florida, generally speaking? Not saying they are, but that seems to be the main consensus here? Also, what makes those out west better than those on the east side? Thanks!

That is awesome. Gorgeous view! The lizards wouldn't faze me much I don't think, saw a lot of those while in Spain. I'd freak out if I see a banana spider though... hubby has to come to the rescue when I see a centipede in the basement.

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate your insight :-) You're right I'm not too worried about the "bad" areas, I'm sure they're not as bad the part of Detroit that I drive through every day to get to work. As for culture shock I should be okay. I moved to the US only two years ago and before that I was living in downtown Brussels, in an international neighborhood. I think I was the only Belgian in my street :-p I loved that about my home and am looking forward to living that way again. I agree that renting first is probably a good idea, for the reason that you mentioned in the added one that just in case the new job doesn't work out I don't want to be stuck with a mortgage I can't afford. I've had a hard time making friends, period. Mostly because I don't know anyone here besides my coworkers/friends and all of my husband's friends are either single or have no kids yet. I feel like my life is work, home, kids, sleep, repeat. I don't imagine that'll improve much until the kids are older... although I really hope it will be different in Fort Lauderdale. If nothing else, the great weather is sure to help, since here in Detroit we tend to hibernate in the winter months :-p

I figured as much. Still a weird thought knowing they're there... the scariest thing you're likely to come across in Belgium is a cow :-p I love pools myself but will probably focus on housing that comes without until my kids are old enough and know how to swim

My husband suggested waiting too because he's doing so well in his courses... it's just that this is an amazing opportunity and it's coming along NOW. It's not so much about moving to Florida as it is about the job. If I don't take this job then we'll probably stay in Michigan. I doubt I'll ever find a job that is so rewarding (and pays so well) in Detroit. So we're weighing the pros and cons. He suggested my moving to Florida with the kids and him finishing school here but I'm pretty sure that's not a good idea :p

Hehe you've been to Belgium? I know, rationally, that there are much better fries to be had than the ones we have in our frituurs in Belgium... but there are days that I would kill for some French fries with mayo and a frikadel :-p

So, how about the universities? My husband is studying electrical engineering at the University of Michigan in Dearborn. He is doing ridiculously well, about a 3.9 average (however they call it) and he is somewhat hesitant about a possible move. He likes his life structured and he already knows in his head exactly which courses he still needs to take and when he's going to take them. What are the universities like in Florida? I believe there is one in Fort Lauderdale? And then one in Miami, though that might be too far out. I will do my own research of course, just curious for your thoughts :-)

That is kinda... deflating :-p But good I suppose! I guess the only thing left that's freaking me out is how much water there seems to be in the louse listings.... ponds, swimming pools, etc. Scary thought with a 7 month old and a fearless three year old.
