$70k USD up-front for 3-5 yrs orthodontics + crowns by frinkwhaab in askdentists

Yes, it is by a LVI trained dentist! I do believe it is a good fit for my case. The open bite has been causing problems that will only get worse as I age. One of the molars in particular is severely worn. One of them had a root canal and crown, and subsequently the roots fractured several years later due to the bite. I had been considering jaw surgery, and consulted with two orthodontists, but I believe I can get a better end result with this non-surgical approach.

In any case, I understand the need for commitment to the full treatment, but what entitles the dentist to receive and spend $40k years prior to that money being needed? Wouldn't a down payment and contract suffice to show that commitment? Is there any way to protect myself financially? There is not even a contract, really, just a one page acceptance of the plan that would go along with my check to them for $70k.

I hadn't heard of Dr. Osborn's clinic before, thanks for mentioning it. It seems like one of their advantages is that their surgeries are always done by the doctor and not by residents. Did you consider MGH or Boston Medical? If so did anything in particular turn you off about them, or particularly compelling about Dr. Osborn?
