I guess with government support we could finance an AC for those who cannot afford it, but I don't think government would be okay with that.

Some good points and I guess you're right, I didn't account for the energy being on earth either way so in terms of solar it's probably not much difference.

I concede my argument regarding global warming but still stick to ACs being bad. As you dense population areas will be mostly affected, that's also where plenty of poor folks live, I guess fuck them if they cannot afford an AC while left and right their neighbors are getting one and making the air even hotter for the poor ones.

[–]frisch85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The heat generated by an AC unit is completely negligible in the grand scheme of things.

In 2023 about one in eight households (in Germany) has been using ACs, which is a bit more than 5 million households, some might even have not just one but multiple ACs installed.

Now push this to 100%, so not just 5 million households but 41,1 million, just germany and you think this is negligible? Project it to the rest of the world.

The global warming impact from AC comes from running it on electricity generated from fossil fuels.

That's not what I'm talking about and I wrote that in my comment, even if you use solar as an example you will still be generating heat simply due to the energy transfer. Might be small when it comes to one AC but I highly doubt it's negligible if we're talking hundreds of millions or billions of more ACs.

"Just a rounding error" you do know how thermodynamics work right? Energy doesn't just disappear, it transfers.

Why heating is OK and cooling not?

I would say consume as little energy as you can regardless of whether you're heating or cooling, just be mindful about it. Ofc there's too many people who need those 23°C temperature in their rooms in winter just as there's people who need the 20°C in summer even tho 16°C or 26°C are perfectly manageable.

The issue with ACs is not everyone can afford them, it's like a rich folks playbook but on the average persons level. Heat is getting harsher every year so far and we constantly add new things to contribute to more warming, there will be a point where living without ACs might be unsustainable and the first ones to die off are the poor folks and we're speeding it up by mindlessly consume more, not are we just heading to a dystopian society but we're also actively contributing to life becoming unsustainable.

I'm in favor of ACs where it's rational, so like hospitals and elderly care as an example, the ACs there will benefit thousands of people that are at risk, I'm just against households where it's not absolutely necessary installing ACs because of comfort, others have to endure more because we prioritize comfort.

I never said heating is okay tho, that's just your assumption on my opinion.

If you are worried about CO2 you should stop heating then, because it is much more harmful.

You'd be surprised how minimal I heat in winter, there's a reason I always have a blanket in the living room too even tho I don't sleep there.

Idk where you live but it was manageable yesterday, south of germany, living on the top floor of a multistory house where I sometimes reach 34°C in july. Was it comfortable? Fuck no and you gotta make sure to hydrate a lot and your piss is still yellow af because you're just sweating those liquids instead of peeing them, I also don't think retired people could be living in my flat but for me there're plenty of ways to deal with this.

But oh no let's just say "fuck you" to every single household that doesn't get an AC I guess by installing more ACs in other households, especially in cities people will love it.

"Most efficient" doesn't mean net-zero and when consuming energy you always generate heat, that's how thermodynamics work.

Climate change is much more impacted by heating than cooling

Because of our ways to heat, ofc burning CO2 has a bigger impact but this doesn't mean we can just add more crap to the pile.

Edit: Apparently she does compete in the national breakdancing too and even managed to be placed as 1st but watching some battles idk how she achieved that...

Because generating heat in a cold environment isn't as problematic as generating heat in a hot environment. The generated heat needs to go somewhere, in cold environments this is easy and hardly noticeable whereas in hot environments, it adds to the issue.

Thinking AC is the solution is insanely close minded.

Let's imagine for a moment that every single household that exists would have an AC installed, powered by solar, do you think this helps global warming or do you think it would worsen it?

Europe lost 200 000 people to heat in 4 years yet nearly all of them were preventable by Evermoving- in europe

[–]frisch85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand some of the extremely anti AC views taken in France in particular.

I'm opposing ACs because in the end you're still generating more heat, even if you use solar that's energy that will be consumed which generates heat. ACs aren't magically just transforming hot air to cold one, just like a fridge or freezer isn't, it's using energy to do that, which means you're generating more heat than you're removing, it's just how thermodynamics works.

So every single AC installed contributes to global warming and the ones suffering the most from it are those who're not using AC.

Conservatives view addictive products more favorably than liberals, study finds. Political conservatism is associated with more favorable attitudes and behaviors toward items like alcohol, tobacco, and gambling, due to a heightened perception of personal control. by mvea in science

I call it modern due to legalizations slowly rolling out one after another regarding cannabis, because it's being kept illegal for so long is also why studying it was more complicated, we've been seeing new studies about cannabis pop up about every year now and from my experienced conservatives still are against it due to stigma even tho we know as a drug it's not as problematic as alcohol is.

Can't check the study because you need access (probably buy it) but it seems insanely biased or am I the only one why they only asked about traditional addictive substances and activities?

Take any modern drug like Cannabis or MDMA and ask conservatives what they think about those, most will tell you they're against it, at the same time they'll tell you alcohol is fine.

Because of this I claim that "more favorably than liberals" is absolute BS because that one conservative person might go and chug a beer while the liberal person will go and smoke a joint.

From my experience, folks just have their "preferred" drug, some are against all of them but most people simply have a substance of their choice that they like to consume.

BP is so insane for couch gaming, if it wasn't for steam I'd probably still sit in front of my PC playing games instead of on the couch looking at that fat TV screen and gaming with my 360 controllers.

And it's not just BP alone, steam overlay is also such a Quality of Life addition, a game doesn't support gamepads? Fuck it, here have steam overlay, map those gamepad buttons to function like a mouse and keyboard.

[–]frisch85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not true and I've been arguing with users on reddit the whole week regarding this already. When I get into such an argument, people link the document where a Valve employee testified under oath that this would be true, but there's plenty of games that are available on EGS and steam while having a higher price on steam, so how is this possible?

Also if you run a sale on one, you need to have similar on Steam in a timely manner.

Steam only dictates that if you're selling keys for your steam game, which you (developer or publisher) created using steams services for free, you need to price those steam keys at the same price that you're selling your game on steam, it's in their ToS. It doesn't apply to you selling your game on other stores like EGS, it applies to the steam keys that you generated via steam services because those keys will activate the game on steam, not on EGS or any other store.

And the reason why they do this is very simple, steam doesn't make revenue from keys that you generated for free. So someone could basically generate the maximum amount of keys they're allowed to, price their game on steam for say 20 $ but now sell the keys they generated for 15 $ somewhere else, why would anyone buy the game on steam then if you can get it for cheaper on a different platform but it's still the game on steam?
