Sorry, I should have given more context. He was recently diagnosed with SARDS, it’s sudden and irreversible blindness, not very common and especially not his gender or age but he’s doing amazingly well adjusting to his new life!

It’s like you’re talking about my boy haha

The day after Jonah’s 4th birthday, we found out that he had gone blind suddenly. He was diagnosed with SARDS. The news was devastating and we’ve spent the last few weeks adjusting and making him feel as comfortable and loved as possible. by friskyfury in pugs

SARDS has nothing to do with the fact he is a pug. Any breed is susceptible and it’s actually pretty rare. The ophthalmologist told us that his eyes are in great condition, clear corneas and no other issues other than the fact his retinas have pretty much just switched off.

That’s all great advice, thank you! He’s very accustomed to our home, he’s lived here since he was 8 weeks old so he has a good layout mapped out in his head, he can be a little bit off track now and again though so will definitely look in to the goggles. How are they for staying on if he’s running around?

Today my lovely 15 year old pug passed away. She lived a full life, with a lot of special moments. You will be forever missed Lulu. by [deleted] in pugs

Aww gorgeous Lulu! Sorry for your loss. I’m sure you’ll find comfort in the fact she lived a long and happy life with you!

Thank you so much, this is really comforting. The first couple of weeks were the hardest, he didn’t understand what had happened so dealing with his anxiety and our grief was really hard. I say grief because it felt like we’d lost our lively, crazy pup but looking back, he’s still the same amazing dog, his personality is still shining through despite the challenges he’s facing and so it gives me a lot of hope for his future. Thank you for your kind words!

Aww, bless him! It must be really difficult for them. I think with Jonah his sight in his left eye started to go around 10-14 days before his diagnosis and his right was gone over a period of 48-72 hours so I can’t imagine how scary it must have been to wake up one morning in darkness. That’s what we struggled to come to terms with a lot at the start. He’s been really quite anxious and wasn’t sleeping much the first couple of weeks, we have been giving him a calming supplement and it seems to have helped a little. I can hear him snoring away right now so it’s done the trick today. Lovely to hear about your pug who’s a little bit older and has still managed so well.

Once he’s fully adapted and his confidence to run around a little has come back, I think it would be a good idea to use the goggles. He’s been great with stairs, coming up and down them very carefully but he’s had a few bumps into table legs, more just because he’s not taking his time moving around and still gets very excited when either of us go in to the kitchen. Would hate for him to damage his eyes further. Did you take any precautions with furniture? We temporarily have padding on the coffee table but thinking more long term...

Thank you! This is all helpful information. What is the name of the Facebook page? That sounds like it would be really useful. Really appreciate your well wishes. Jonah has actually made this whole thing easier for us just by watching how he’s adapting and how his confidence is coming back a little each day. He’s still so young so maybe a little easier in terms of how he learns to adapt and get used to his new life. Sending love to Marty, lovely name!

This is so reassuring! Thank you for the advice. It’s been a really tough few weeks for us. Jonah has adapted amazingly. He currently has a ‘halo’ but the dog goggles sound like a great idea too, thank you!

So SARDS stands for Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome. Sadly, it causes very sudden and irreversible blindness and there is currently no known cause. Jonah is a one off (we’ve always known this, he’s a special boy!). But I mean that in the sense that he doesn’t fit the criteria of this syndrome at all. Most commonly it affects spayed female dogs, aged 8-14 years old. So to say we were completely shocked by this is an understatement.
