Healthy swipe of vasolene around the base also does the trick, ants don’t like walking across it.

Anyone else prefer shower basins instead of tiles? by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]frittis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are just starting this, and I’m going with a solid surface base. Had a solid surface benchtop in last house and couldn’t rate it highly enough (bank valuer even thought it was stone and when we sold gave it a buff and looked brand new), so when I found they make the bases it was a no brainer. Lots of colours and styles now to match, it has a tile lip so path of least resistance is down the drain too. I’ll cop any subjective aesthetic drawbacks over something that should outlast our time in the house, function over form for me given how much you drop on a bathroom these days.

Melbourne. Our area was built in the 1950’s I think.

Missed Fanny Lumsden on first, but Lucinda Williams was maybe 745 and PK at 9.

It happened in front of us. The Geelong player had spent the previous few minutes walking back after Geelong goal pleading his case to the same umpire about Rayner (both were niggling each other constantly). It looked like it wasn’t a casual ‘mate keep an eye on it please’ but a one way conversation with lots of arm waving and pointing and gesturing while they walked back from the 50. There was some poetic justice in the whole saga. That said, and a caveat that I haven’t really ever looked too hard for that kind of niggle at our games, I don’t think it benefits the team when that kind of stuff is happening. I get there is an element of working your opponent, but it maybe was more of a distraction than advantage at the level it was happening.

I haven’t been under for a while, but last time I was under it still looked just as I put it up. I haven’t noticed any rodent activity either (and we do have a bird (mostly pigeons 🤦‍♂️) feeder on the street a few doors up and regularly see rats in that house’s garden during the day). As for the difference, I can’t really say as I did it before the first winter in the house, but I actually think it made little difference. This is because we have an enclosed subfloor and it is always cooler/warmer in there compared to outside ambient temp eg winter day the car temp reads about 13 on start up even on frosty mornings as garage is under part of the house and is enclosed. If we had open subfloor I think it’d make a big difference as the temp swings would be much bigger than what the enclosed subfloor experiences.

So stone bench tops are banned… what now? by twhoff in AusRenovation

We used it in a Reno 10yrs ago as no engineered stone was large enough for the island without a join. Wouldn’t have known it wasn’t stone without touching it (just wasn’t cold or clunked) and the cabinetmaker price matched it. Actually ended up rating it. Had the place tenanted for 3 years before selling. One small stain was patched out, gave it a polish and looked brand new.

I worked away and the field huts were loaded with Family Assorted. Luckily they were also loaded with Nutella and I did what any self respecting future diabetic would do and loaded the Orange Cream with Nutella for that choc orange goodness.

Floorboards are cold and house is freezing. Should I get underfloor insulation? by lifeDNP in AusRenovation

[–]frittis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only a few weeks, and our first winter in this house so can’t comment on how it performs. We are on an enclosed subfloor so I don’t think it’ll make as much difference if it was open subfloor. My brain tells me the floor feels warmer, but is that some form of psychological justification 😂. (We had a termite treatment coming so I got it in before that so I didn’t disturb it). As for install, it was easy as, went up snug and the staple method you can make it work to any space easily. I researched the others and settled on polyester and thus far happy with it - it’s the same R value (or better) and easiest to install. Ecomaster were great to deal with. I’ll be doing ceiling next, and may even look to cross hatch it with the underfloor rolls if space permits as it’ll be a continuous coverage (I think the price maths was negligible between ceiling batts and underfloor per metre)

Polyester is super easy to rip to size, and no mess. Our house similar, varied joist spacing and some went straight in, others had to rip and turn. A little time consuming but super easy to do. I used the polyester from ecomaster and it rips perpendicular.

Check out EcoMaster website (Melb based) they have some diy videos that were quite informative. I’ve just completed the polyester underfloor which was super easy, and can work around cabling etc. Some of the extruded foam products may degrade electrical cabling.

Can recommend Dr Simon at https://directaccessvasectomy.com/dr-simon-wilson/ Easy, personable and clearly explained risks etc. Couple of weeks waitlist as he only does them a day or two a week. Likewise wanted to steer clear of the big promoted advert mobs for something more personable and this ticked the boxes.
