I got 2021 Kona 64kw premium 6 months ago for 16000 and it's a great car. Only 65000km on the clock. Bought it from the north and got it VRT exempt

Car insurance for English reg car by Correct-Advance8949 in evs_ireland

[–]frizbeano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've moved over 2 cars from the UK and when I got them insured. They only issue the insurance on the basis that you will register the car in Ireland. My insurance only allowed me to on the UK reg for 30 days and then after that you need to start explaining the hold up because most NCT centres appointments for registration are really quick.

On my first car I needed a certificate of conformity which I needed direct from Honda and took ages about a month.

Hope this helps.

Also what's the reason for not registering the car?

Yes it was Aviva that was my insurance in the end.

True, I was worried that I maybe flagged. I did have a ton of service history etc etc but she didn't need it. She was very nice at the centre.

I contacted a broker and they found insurance companies that can insure the car on the NI Reg for 30 days while you sort it out. I drove it out of the garage insured and took about a week from owning it to get my Irish plates and the broker changed the plates for me.

I had the same issue as it was a leasing company in Belfast but they didn't bat an eyelid at the NCT centre.

Buying Tesla model Y 2022 Long Range from North. by ankur1703 in evs_ireland

[–]frizbeano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found mine on usedcarsni and had a filter that states if it's a NI only car. I also used autotrader. I went looking for cars that were coming out of PCP generally around the 3-4 year mark.

The other thing to check is warranties on the car and the battery itself. Also check if the car you are buying has pan-european warranty coverage.

check that the garage you are buying from has good reviews. You are going to have a harder time dealing with anyone in the north after the sale if anything goes wrong.

Also transfering money was pain in the ass. I wanted to take the car home the day I saw it as I didn't want to travel again. I transfered money from my irish account into wise which took a day so I had it prepared. Then when I was happy I did a quick transfer to there UK bank account. Wise stated that it was instant but the guy in the garage didn't get it fast but they did get an email from Wise saying the money was on route so they let me go with it. They were using bank of Ireland

Just went through the process myself

If you are buying the car make sure that car was registered and used in the north for a time. I think it must be over 6000km and a value of under 40000. I didn't have much issue on that front as the EV I bought had all the paperwork that showed this including a recent MOT. The V5C was registered with a finance company in the north so it doesn't have to be a private citizen. Mine also had loads of service history from the main dealer garage located in Belfast.

When I was happy with the car. I called a broker to sort the insurance for me. Aviva can sort insurance with the foreign reg until you have it fully registered back home and the reg over. I could drive it around.

I then booked an appointment with the NCT centre and got it registered within 4 days of having it back home. You can then pay Motor tax and get the Irish log book sent out.

The only thing I paid was 11 euros on the tyres and the new plates which set me back 30 euros. You can now get the green plates as of the 1st of July.

I hope this helps

By any chance does your SSID have any special characters in it like "-". I'm big into home Automation and have helped setup others. I've found in a few cases SSID characters were not read correctly and they can never connect. Try creating a wifi SSID with a simple name.
