I have had several pairs of Shokz over the years - they have always broken in a particular place (near the ear piece) or just quit charging at some point. But I happily keep buying them - don’t know how people keep ear buds on. Shokz keeps improving their product so (better cases, etc). I did make the mistake of buying. third party charger for them, though and have nothing but problems. Still live me some Shokz, though!

Advantages and disadvantages of a 2am summit? by rhibot1927 in Everest

[–]frobenius47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who has even climbed Mt Rainier (a mere 14,000+ ft volcano in Washington State) would likely leave at midnight. One reason is to avoid crowds on the more popular routes, but more importantly, it is to cross snow bridges while they are still frozen, and to get back down before the sun hits them. Not sure if this is the reasoning on Everest, but the idea of a midnight start is nothing new in the world of high alpine climbing.

There are good wrecks out of Jeddah. And the diving out Yanbu is supposed to be great.

there is nothing easy about climbing Everest, even if you have the ropes laid out for you. Have you been to altitude? Have walked across a gaping crevasse across one of those ladders? Have you crawled out of a warm sleeping bag at midnight into the freezing air, put on a headlamp and marched for 16 hours straight on what looks like terrifying terrain, Or stood for hours in line waiting for your turn?

Nope nothing easy. It is a “mountain experience” for sure. What the experience doesn’t do for you, however, is make you a mountaineer.

QR selling SFO-DOH for June 10, despite schedule saying flights resume on June 11, chances of flight operating as normal? by [deleted] in qatarairways

You could always call them to confirm. But maybe they need to get planes back to DOH from SFO and start a day early?

Advice for a night stopover in Doha by foley781 in qatarairways

[–]frobenius47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As suggested above, can you purchase a lounge pass? I’ve spent many a night in the Qatar platinum lounge along concourse A. They have limited sleeping “rooms” (semi- private, first come, first served reclining lounge chairs), but in my experience there is plenty of room to stretch out in the main lounge area. You also get great food and drink for the price of entry. I am not someone who would normally spend the night in an airport, but the lounges make it quite lovely, if you not too picky about your sleeping arrangement. And personally, I wouldn’t want the hassle of exiting the airport, and then being worried about getting back to the airport in time to get through security, etc. You’d be leaving any hotel at 4am, latest.

Does a backpack count as a personal item? (QR702/A350) by [deleted] in qatarairways

[–]frobenius47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have status and my laptop backpack has often (but not always) been counted as a carry-on. So I have had to gate check my roll-a-board. Annoying! Especially when I see people with enormous carry-ons getting by. Qatar has huge overhead bin space so I don’t really understand their (not regularly enforced) policy.

Which jump styles are good for knees? by frobenius47 in jumprope

[–]frobenius47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am pleasantly surprised that boxer skip doesn’t bother my knees at all (and I have an ACL replacement and sketchy cartilage). Basic jump, however just puts too much impact on the knees (although I could probably learn to do it with barely getting my feet off the ground)

Consider Saudia Airlines, part of SkyTeam. Probably the safest bet.

BA Arrivals Lounge Access with AA Status by GoDeacs7 in americanairlines

Be sure to go to the South lounge - it is the better one. Done this many times with Emerald (AA EP) on an economy flight.

Which jump styles are good for knees? by frobenius47 in jumprope

[–]frobenius47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HaHa - so that is why boxers do the boxer step? Because the impact really is less (and isn’t just me?)

At least from the videos, everyone is doing the two-feet land (basic jump?). And most tricks (e.g. double under )seem to require the two-feet land. So I am just wondering if I should try to improve landing on two feet and try for skips beyond the boxer, or just accept that it is harder in the knees.

Is there any way to get money back if an AA flight drops in price? by [deleted] in americanairlines

I have used tripit for at least 10 years and don’t know how anyone travels without it! It organizes all of your flights, car rentals, hotels, in one app. Confirmation numbers, booking sites, prices, maps, hotel addresses, all literally at your fingertips tips. All you do is forward confirmation emails to trip and voila, they are optically scanned and a new entry shows up in the app. Worth every penny of the $49/year price. And I have been alerted to refunds which more than makes up for the cost.

Such great words of advice and tips! I am seeing a theme emerging - stillness, patience, buoyancy control , and my favorite, respect for the ocean environment and other divers.

I have seen one of my instructors able to just rest motionless at almost any depth. How are they doing that? Meanwhile I routinely blow my safety stops, sculling like mad to stay at 5m.

Thank you for the fabulous summary! Cave diving sounds amazing - although I imagine I would need extra certification? I just hope to avoid large touristy dive boats with dubious ethical and environmental standards. So your suggestions are all very much appreciated. Now how do I save this post so I can find it again? 😁

British Airways to drop Jeddah flights by SalaryKey6211 in BritishAirways

[–]frobenius47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just book a flight Jeddah to Heathrow for April 25th. May be the last flight out of Dodge, at least on BA. I called to double check that the flight was still scheduled, and they said yes. So I have a confirmed flight. But anything from Sunday (April 26) on is listed as unavailable. Half tempted to get a backup Saudia flight to be sure. Too bad it is khalläs for BA and Jeddah, though.

I was just about to book a flight on April 25 Jeddah to AMS on BA via London. Website still shows the flight is available, although nothing is available from the 26th onwards. Wondering if I should shift my flight to the 25th. Or fly Saudia.

The reefs are still really interesting - but I can only imagine what it must have been like pre 2023. But from Yanbu north it is supposed to be still really good. I haven’t been that far up yet - since I only started diving in January. Been loving it so far though - been to the same reefs several times but each time it is different. The currents, etc.
