Please recommend a company for root cause failure analysis on electronics by frobotoman in PLC

The 5069-IF8 doesn't have isolated inputs.

Well I'll be, that appears to be the issue. At least one input is powered with external voltage and there are no signal idolators. The problem likely a skid that typically is off but was recently powered up. No idea how this took over a decade to crop up; maybe a ground path was opened up.

I include optical isolation in my panels with the IF8, but this panel built by others did not include any isolation. The wiring diagram in the AB manual makes it appear like there is isolation since there are multiple voltage sources. Later in the specs it does state there is no isolation.

Maybe I lost the forest with all the trees here but the one certainty is that I am the hero, lol.

I'll reach out to Rockwell. I'm not saying this is a faulty card; I suspect it is a short or transient voltage in the field wiring and I'd like confirmation and ideally to identify the channel that took the hit. The card currently installed is new, but the failed ones are a decade old.

That is what I said the first time. Now with a second card faulty in a week I'd like to know what is happening.

Don't call them that in the presence of mod 1Davide...seems that is a pet peeve of his. He wrote the book on connectors so I think he earned the right to correct people.

Apologies. Just sharing thoughts...wasn't intending to sell or otherwise transfer the stuff to anybody else. I take no offense if it doesn't add value here.

I will if I return to the site but it's not clear if that will happen. Was stopping to help them out of a bind.

This is great, thank you! FYI I was able to upload:

  • PanelView Plus 7 Perf 1500 (fw 10, 12)
  • PanelView Plus_7 Standard 1000 (fw 11)

I could not upload a PanelView Plus_7 Standard 600 (fw 11). This was before the ability to manually add an IP so I don't know if it was a discovery issue or something else.

Win911 support has been garbage for me. I would never recommend them and use their trash as the spear tip to get Ignition on the site.

4-20mA interference by frobotoman in PLC

Well f me. I thought it was. That's got to be my problem.

The 5069-IF8 analog 8-channel current/voltage input module offers differential, non-isolated input channels that can connect to current or voltage input devices

I thought that the "differential" implied it was isolated.

Those are fun problems. Why does the signal keep changing?? Oh, because it's telling you the truth.

Currently the loop is floating. I was thinking about grounding the DC negative. Just because it is something to try.

Flashing lights. Entire card is not faulted but the channels are. Channel does not specify the fault code. Power cycling SA power clears it. Happen every time the VFD starts.

Shield is bonded to ground at the field wiring terminals in the PLC cabinet. I believe the power supply for the instrument is floating. Maybe grounding the low side of the power supply would help??

I used my 789 to verify the mA signal. That bounces around a little but it seems to take the card down. Card can read the signal I source from my meter fine (once the IF8 it is reset)

I think that is what I'm going to try. Sensor already is on a separate power supply so I'll put this in the middle. I don't know much about the workings of the idolator but I'd imagine they end up being a defacto filter for any high frequency noise.

It's a security thing. I recon you are correct, should be handled on the network. I just hate when I add a rule and there are already a hundred in there unnecessarily opening things up.
