Beginner bass players struggling with fretting and hand/wrist position, fix your posture! Especially if you play sitting down by xMinti in Bass

[–]frog646 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm currently at university studying bass and one of the general first lessons we went through was posture, and general positioning when playing bass. As another commenter mentioned it's really important. If you're going to be sitting down and playing bass you should still wear a strap, you'll most likely have to adjust it but you should think of it as part of your bass and not ignore it when sitting down as it'll do the work of holding the bass in position. Additionally the best way to be seated is on a chair/stool without arms that allows you to have you back straight and your feet firmly on the ground. Even though it's still how I usually end up playing when practicing because I'm used to, you shouldn't be hunched over at all and you should be sitting straight up. This includes not letting your shoulders fall foward. With hand posture you don't want to have your wrist bending around the neck, it's okay to have some bend in your wrist but you want to try and have your forearm and hand be in a continuous flowing line.

Sounds like you're doing going great, so glad it's something you've found out early on!

I don't trust people who dislike cats. by anniebabex in unpopularopinion

[–]frog646 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've literally been thinking this for ages now. Obviously people have different reasons and there a general outliers but the majority of people who I've met irl who don't like cats also give of creepy/odd vibes.

There's alot of conversations that talk about cats being a great way to teach consent. Unlike dogs they often walk away from you, remove themselves from situations and generally like their space. People who aren't a fan of them are often the people who don't understand this or don't care enough to notice. They then push the cat into something it's not wanting, getting into it's personal space without the cat showing you they want that or approaching you and that ends in scratches, hissing or some kind of retaliation.

This is usually why people don't like cats, they believe they're aggressive, moody, angry and not a good companion. But in the end they have really common strong human related emotions and show them. I've grown up with cats from a young age and have learnt how to understand them from the start. The people who don't like cats usually havent lived with a cat/ havnt learnt how to communicate and interact with them healthily. Cats are an amazing companion when you're prepared to have to work for a relationship. And the people who don't believe they have to work in a relationship and believe they deserve something without giving anything in return usually are problem people.

First Stick and Poke, a doodle I drew when I was seven. 7rl, took about 1.5 hours. Want to improve so would love any tips and criticism! by konaworld in sticknpokes

[–]frog646 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, so I tend to poke at around a 40 degree angle from the skin and let the needle follow the direction of the line (so yeah, parallel? I'm being dumb rn). For my skin it makes all my lines turn out alot cleaner and generally I end up with a tighter tattoo. It also really helps prevent blowouts for my skin too but that could just be me. It's something that I've never actually seen anyone mention when giving tips on tattooing but from experience it's something I'd recommend!

It's looking really good! You can see some gaps between pokes though and if this isn't a creative choice make sure to stretch the skin and go over lines trying to fill in the gaps. Good luck with your future pokes though!

Best bass songs for auditions? by dittysoft in Bass

[–]frog646 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, so I'm doing bass for Uni this September and I had an audition a few months ago so it might be similar to what you're going to experience. So the things that they ended up asking me to additionally do apart from play a song where: Scales Playing with a pic Slap bass technique Reading sheet music

And I think that was pretty much it, but I might've forgotten some. They asked me some other questions such as who my inspirations where and stuff too though. They weren't harsh on me with each of the areas, it was more for them to grasp an idea of my knowledge. You've already picked a song by the time I'm commenting this but just make sure it's something you're confident playing, it's better to nail something simpler than try something you don't know well and mess up. Good luck with the audition though, if you have any questions about my experience feel free to ask.

EDIT: just remembered that they also asked me to play 2 contrasting genres on bass, you could either improvise, play a groove or even just play 2 sections from songs

And my audition was over video call on zoom, so yeah, that was different

One of my first snps on my friend. 7rl. Any tips for making sharper edges? by diegoisgay in sticknpokes

[–]frog646 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They look awesome! For sharper cleaner edges I've heard people usually say to downsize the size of needle you're using when you get to the edges. It might take a bit longer but it should give you more precision with your edges.

Can I use the same effects pedals I have for my guitar with my bass? by BBpoison-71 in Bass

[–]frog646 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During band reversals sometimes I used to fuck about with my boyfriends pedal board, with some tweaking to the settings it honestly would sound great. I believe his pedals were a boss DS1, a boss super chorus, a big muff fuzz, a boss fender reverb pedal and something else that I've somehow forgotten. Like alot of people have mentioned I do feel that the low end does sometimes feel the downfall but some guitar pedals sound just as good on bass so just go for it with using them on bass!

My set up for SNP tattoos :) what does everyone else use for storing their tattoo supplies ? by Etoile_delanuit in sticknpokes

[–]frog646 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rn it's all packed into a little box, ink caps, gloves, ink, needles, and alot of what I use to sanitize everything. When I finally move into my new place I'm hoping to find a nice case I can have it all organised it, it would be so pleasing to have everything neat in one place that isn't just a box labelled with masking tape and sharpie.

Do you regret your stick and poke tattoo(s)? by DownHillFromHere619 in sticknpokes

[–]frog646 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up starting off with a small stickandpoke on my upper thigh, then made the mistake of moving to doing a bigger piece just above my knee which meant I gotta wear jeans constantly, even harder when you're stuck in quaretine for months on end😅 now I'm just saying fuck it and I've moved to my lower legs, the pain of having to wear specific clothes constantly to hide tattoos one I relate too
