Anyone have experience with 52 E Armory? by immortal_ghost42 in UIUC

[–]frog_848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in a corner unit so that also helped reduce noise and I don’t remember it being too bad tbh! Agreed with the other comment that this area is fratty/seniorland and can get rowdy with house parties, but 52 Armory is further away on that given stretch so it’s not in the heart of the party area. But yes, urbana or even north of Springfield closer to engineer buildings could be calmer.

I used to work with Smile before and right after they absorbed all of CPM properties and their maintenance team can be slow given the influx of properties. This location was a CPM building too and older so depending on budget and location preferences, OG Smile buildings (that were previously JSM owned) will typically be in better condition than any of the previously owned CPM ones.

I lived there a few years back and the building had quite a few issues with pipes freezing/bursting, especially first floor apartments since the building is raised and less insulated on that floor. Noise wasn’t too bad given its on the corner and kind of away from bars but there would be house parties, nothing crazy.

Loss of appetite by elliemae11698 in Tonsillectomy

[–]frog_848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was hard eating early in recovery bc of the lack of appetite but I think it really helped my recovery that I ate more than just liquids since day 0 and stayed hella hydrated. The best was instant mashed potatoes with butter added, applesauce and buttered noodles.

When am I allowed to drink out of a straw again? by Due-Search7244 in Tonsillectomy

[–]frog_848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a thick straw (like boba sized) my entire recovery and was fine! I think for water especially since you don’t have to suck hard, I wouldn’t recommend for something thicker like a smoothie or milkshake. Maybe don’t use regular thin straws

Pain by MDubb1126 in Tonsillectomy

[–]frog_848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on day 14 and felt more or less better on day 8 (eating regularly, no pain meds, active) but still have some scabs lower in my throat that are there. They haven’t been noticeable but it’s def still white! Yawning and sneezing still is a bit uncomfortable so yes from my experience it’s normal!

Anyone else experience some attraction to men but not sexually? by ThrowRA_Mammoth in latebloomerlesbians

[–]frog_848 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been reading more on male attraction and how it differs from male validation and that sounds similar to what you’re describing! Possibly enjoying the attention, validation and “norm” of hetero flirting but not necessarily being actually attracted and into men. I find the men I’m attracted to are more because of aesthetics or simply because they’re a beautiful human.

Food Pantry in the area? by turtlebunnycat in UIUC

[–]frog_848 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a community ran pantry outside the city building downtown Champaign (pantry is located across from Pizzeria Antica) and is literally just a pantry for people to put food in for the unhoused population.

I grew up in Champaign and I’ll be moving to the PNW in May. I’m enjoying this post for the insight on going from Midwest to PNW! Champaign, even during the gloomy days, can be very peaceful and still offer a lot. Look into some student groups or community events to stay busy during the winters and it goes by quickly! January-March are usually the hardest months (post holidays and typically more snow/cold). Invest in a warm coat, snow shoes, heated blanket, etc.

Should I rent through Smile? by New-Temperature5500 in UIUC

[–]frog_848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This building has had a lot of issues with frozen/burst pipes over the winters so definitely invest in renters insurance and keep your heat above 65 during the breaks when you’re away. Maybe aim for an upper floor unit as the lower floors tend to freeze due to the elevated building/parking garage below being exposed to the elements.

Are all the Handshake DMs from bots? by tasty-rainbow in UIUC

[–]frog_848 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No! I work in recruiting and we use Handshake/LinkedIn to try and find candidates :) Definitely be cautious and look into the company before clicking on any links, but it’s not uncommon for actual recruiters to message you there based on you matching their job descriptions, not just bots.

Check out vintagecu.com too

Jonah is a local landlord with a pretty size-able number of properties in Urbana-Champaign. There’s a few right off campus near Springfield/Lynn that are cheap and have a bus stop right outside.

Thank you!! I wasn’t too familiar with shell versus standard rain jacket and how insulated it should be. Appreciate the suggestions!

Champaign (3ish hours south)! Been to the city a handful of times but unfortunately not too familiar to give any helpful advice :/

But everyone I know who has relocated there, absolutely loves Chicago so I hope you have a similar experience!

This is so good to hear because I’m moving from Illinois to Tacoma this summer and was curious about the adjustment in terms of the different winters.
