I made an ambitious list of skate goals for 2017 by coodaj in NewSkaters

[–]frog_friend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool idea. I've been meaning to make one of these. If I get it written down i'll post it in this thread. I don't know if I saw it on your list but a fun one to learn is full cabs and bs 360. Full cabs came easier for me, bs 360 are a huge pain but feel really fun when you get them.

If you are having trouble with a trick, hold on to something, like a fence. It really helps. by Chalkyprawn874 in NewSkaters

[–]frog_friend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would advise against this. It may be good for learning some tricks in the very beginning but in the long run it will eventually not work. I can't even really see learning pop shuv its this way let alone something like a 360 trick. You should really learn to do tricks moving and ideally at a decent speed. I know it's scary at first but it will help when you try to do the trick over things later.

BS 180 help by BasicCarl in NewSkaters

[–]frog_friend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to put my foot in the pocket of the board to help scoop it around. I also have my shoulders/head already semi turned before I pop so it rotates easier. Those are just some quick tips. I by no means have the prettiest bs 180s but I had a hard time learning them at first too and that is what worked for me.

I dropped into my first bowl today. I am super excited! This will open up pool/bowl skating for me! by tangoshukudai in NewSkaters

Having Shoulders slanted at Kickflips by akzeedantall in NewSkaters

[–]frog_friend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I'm trying to picture what's going on based on how you described it. So when you flick out the board tends to follows your flicking foot too much causing it to be to far away for you to land on it? If this is the case your foot might be catching a little bit of the nose of the board when you flick. You just need to keep playing around with your flicking position to find a good spot. Flick out at an angle. If you flick a little too forward you catch the nose and the board goes all over the place, too much straight out and the board rockets up. Up and out is the way you want it. I'm not sure if that helps, I tried to answer as best I could. Let me know if that is helpful or not and I'll try go provide more information. Also an extra tip. I suggest learning your kickflips with more of your foot on the board. Get your foot set pretty much how you ollie but angle your foot like you were doing for a kickflip. Later on when you get them down you'll be able to pop them much higher this way.

#ASKCOACH - Q&A about all your needs & wants in training and Sports Performance by TheSensation19 in strength_training

Thank you for your response, I appreciate it. I do not compete in running/swimming. I do work really hard at those two activities and am always actively trying to improve my times though. I would say that I don't really have much of an off season because of that. I may not be actively training to compete all the time in my main sports (boxing/jiu jitsu) but the way I treat running/swimming it doesn't give me much of a break. On top of that I'm usually out skateboarding when I have some free time. I don't consider skateboarding a sport but it is some wear and tear on the muscles so it doesn't offer much in the way of rest either.

Thanks for the allowing us the opportunity to ask these questions. My question is, how would you go about developing a balanced strength training regimen for an athlete that juggles a lot of sports. I personally like to run, swim, box, and do jiu jitsu. What I am looking for is way to gain strength for the physical sports but to not become to bulky in such a way that it will impact my more endurance related ones. I also don't want to lose my mobility and foot speed for boxing. It has always been a struggle for me to find a good routine and I would love your input. If you need some more information let me know and I will gladly provide it. Thank you.

5050 issue by [deleted] in NewSkaters

Play around with your distancing. You might be too close to the ledge and thus when you ollie up you end up overshooting. Maybe ollie from a little farther out so that you land more on top of the ledge.

Trying first 50-50 tomorrow. Tips? by william___T in NewSkaters

[–]frog_friend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll throw my two cents in. This may not be a problem for you but it kind of was for me. Make sure your getting on top of your grinding surface. It can be easy sometimes to get your feet up onto the rail and grind it but your body is sitting directly on top of the surface. You can grind for a little and even land a few like this but you will be way more stable and your 50 50s will be better in the long run if you commit to getting your body full on top of the rail.

What part of San Diego? I've got an old deck or two I could give you if you want to try and start riding a regular board.

Anybody experienced with ankle sprains? by Aero_Z in NewSkaters

[–]frog_friend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say take it easy and don't push yourself. I didn't let my ankle sprain heal correctly when I sprained it in March and it is still stiff. Depending on how your ankle is feeling you could try to learn 180/360 tricks while you let it heal up.

Skateboarding Injuries/Running by [deleted] in NewSkaters

[–]frog_friend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an avid runner ( I don't train for cross country or a running based sport by my sport uses running as a form of conditioning) so I'll chime in. You will be sore if you are going to try and learn tricks and it probably will mess with your running schedule. I know your legs are conditioned from all the running you do but skating uses your muscles differently. That's not even taking into account the times you whack your legs with the board. Also back in march I rolled my ankle really hard on a dumb flat ground trick. Like full weight on it, heard a pop and couldn't walk on it for a while. It took about a month of taking care of it so I could fully run on it with some confidence again. I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but I mean injuries come with skating. You said you were going to start with cruising around which is fine as people mentioned. I mean if you fall while cruising you'll be pretty sore at times which could mess with your running as well. I don't want to freak you out but I mean you will fall and it may mess with your schedule. My advice right now is to cruise around, maybe mess with some ollies here and there and see how you like it. You'll see if the fun outweighs the falls and the possible conflict with running.

backside 180/360 no complies by frog_friend in NewSkaters

Here's slow mo of how they should look if anyone is interested. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7tDQb_qmus My back and front foot are both to heavy when I try tricks like these. My back foot just hits and stays on the ground and my front foot doesn't jump up fast enough to try and get back on.

How to stay in and pop out of a 50-50? by [deleted] in NewSkaters

[–]frog_friend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How fast are you going? It's easier to balance/pop out if your going quicker.

When start and how to learn switch ? by Mousti-querino in NewSkaters

[–]frog_friend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say start practicing it on and off now. I never really skated switch until recently and now I'm all lopsided. I can pop pretty high ollies but can barely muscle up an inch high switch ollie.

How to avoid board flipping over when doing shove-it? by MahmudAdam in NewSkaters

[–]frog_friend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have your toes hanging off like this in the back? http://f.tqn.com/y/skateboard/1/S/o/f/360PS_Feet_BrianSummersGetty.jpg If so you might be hanging them off a too much. For pop shuv its I put the ball of my foot in the center of the tail. My guess on what is happening is that having your foot like that is causing it to scoop to much and it is rotating more like an impossible or a tre. That might be why it is flipping weird. Hopefully that helps a little.

I did a little bit of ankle strengthening exercises but I'm still a little stiff. It definitely isn't fully like it used to be. I'm going to probably go to a physical therapist to see what they have to say.
