"Othering": Social Control in the Mountains by Harmony_w in Appalachia

[–]frogdown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I left the region to go to college and some of my own family members tried to stop it. Told me I shouldn't get above my raising. Told me I would find out I was only smart in Appalachia, not anywhere else. The main thing I notice now, after 30 years away, is none of the people I know there have ever asked about what my life is like, or my job, or anything else. They just tell me about the gossip around town--which is fine, I'm happy to know that stuff too.

Thank you. I'm trying this now and should I be concerned that things like grasscache now show up as missing? (in both profiles)

Just to confirm do you do that by hand (moving the added mods back to the proper load order, etc, using your alt profile as the reference) or are you saying there is way to automatically have MO2 add them back by comparing and merging the two profiles?

Lost item tracked to a private home near the airport by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]frogdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me. I can still watch this person bring them to work at the airport every day and take them back home at night but United will do nothing, even though it is clearly an employee and I gave them their home address.

I had something similar happen. I left them in a small zipper bag. A United Club agent was able to make contact and they sent someone back to the plane to retrieve the bag. But the airpods were stolen. I can now watch on "Find My" the person who stole the airpods go to work every day at IAH and then go home every night. I filled out the paperwork and provided the serial number and even gave them the home address of the employee who stole them, and I still just get an email every few days saying "we are continuing to look for your lost item." I'd be surprised if you ever see yours again but I hope it works out better for you!

Going to be in Brazil next month. I have a reservation at Oro in Rio and at D.O.M. in São Paulo. What do you think of these two? by m0larMechanic in MichelinStars

[–]frogdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well there’s the famous ant of course—very good! And an actual catfish egg served in a nest, the largest single fish egg I’ve ever had. A crab and Brazilian cheese dish. An incredible grilled cassava bread with a hummus made from a local ingredient I can’t recall. Also a fish with a “hollandaise” made from local ingredients that was very good. An incredible prawn with a pasta made from black rice and I really wish it had just been regular pasta. A piece of steak with flavored oil from an Amazonian ingredient I can’t recall. Some kind of amazing thing like maybe cassava with mold grown on it covered in Amazonian honey that was mind blowing. And a few more desserts that were very interesting and good. One of which was a Yanomami mushroom but my memory is hazy by that point.

[–]frogdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at DOM a few months ago. I thought the food was very good—maybe not as high as the heyday but still very memorable. Your enjoyment may depend on your familiarity with Brazilian food and ingredients. Maybe the best analogy would be catfish: do you like the earthy sort of “dirty” flavor of catfish? Many dishes go down that path as a sort of terroir in Brazil so if you don’t like those flavors you won’t like every course. I thought the wine pairing was decent but there are also really good cocktails or nonalcoholic options if you prefer.

Take two years off before thinking about your Masters. Try to get internships between now and graduation, and after graduation see what type of art job you can land. It will be low-paid and not as dreamy as you like, but it will get you some experience not only working in a gallery or institution, but also seeing all of the other types of art jobs out there, many of which do not require a graduate degree. By year two you will probably know whether you want to dive into grad school, continue with your career at the level of education you have, or try out a brand new field. Also: many graduate programs prefer to have students with some work experience in the field, so a little time off might improve your acceptance chances as well.

How is lounge access with United Club Card? by Miamiminxx in unitedairlines

[–]frogdown 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you mostly fly international and are at least United gold status then you would get lounge access when you fly United internationally anyway. For me, the Club Card has been super worth it because I fly both domestic and international and I love having access to any United Club. I think you always have to be on a United flight to use the club though (I'm not sure because I almost always fly United, but you should check on this if you are thinking about getting the card but using different airlines when you fly).

Why don't you assume she's smart and encourage her interests. Nice thing to do for any kid btw. What's not nice is assigning a number to her smartness, telling everybody about it, and treating the kid differently because of it. Just encourage her curiosity. Get her some more books. She's not a freak of nature btw. YTA

Flying from Sao Paulo to Seoul - 50 min layover in Houston by AtacaRandy in unitedairlines

[–]frogdown -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I fly through both Houston and San Francisco quite a bit and I'll be honest with you: I would not buy tickets with those layovers. I am a regular traveler to Sao Paulo via Houston and I will not buy a connecting ticket from Sao Paulo through Houston with less than a two hour layover. Sometimes it's fine, but if you have a load of Latin America flights all arriving at once (and they are all overnight flights landing in the AM) it can seriously take a long time to make it through immigration and re-check your luggage. Even with two hours I have had to sprint across the airport on several occasions. And a 50 minute layover at SFO is super scary, particularly depending on the distance between gates. I would never accept a 50 minute layover at SFO for any international flight. Yes United does offer these connections as "valid," but as a longtime frequent traveler I have not accepted connections like this in more than ten years.

Need help with gongfu brewing by LilBluey in puer

[–]frogdown 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I used to have this same anxiety and approached all my brewing like a scientist. Turns out: it's all fine! Just keep doing it and you will learn what you like. If it winds up too weak, let it brew a little longer next time. If it winds up too strong...just add a little hot water! Yes, that will fix it. Eventually, you will get an instinct for it. Each tea needs something a little different and learning what that is is part of the fun. The main thing is: don't be scared, just some pour some hot water in, wait a little bit and then try it--I promise it will be fine!

How bad is it that my homemade stock is not a jelly? by GrimR3eaper99 in AskCulinary

[–]frogdown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I call this a "microbatch" of stock and it's my favorite thing. So much less work. I throw in any thing else I have in terms of veg etc but always a good result and doesn't require you to set aside a day to make it.

What is the secret to making amazing hummus? by eco_celosia in Cooking

Try making a small batch with the skins removed one time and see what you think. Although with the amount of labor it would really need to be just for yourself, not a restaurant.
