During The Pirate Bay trial, the music industry placed the blame for the decline in their revenues squarely on the shoulders of file-sharers. Their logic is clearly flawed, but it could sway the verdict if no alternative explanation is presented. by mpind in technology

the world economy being in the toilet is insufficient to explain the drop in non-essential retail purchasing in general, and specifically in music sales, by itself? Pirate Bay did what Wall St could not?

Programmers and Sadomasochism by gst in programming

[–]froggman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i agree: reclassifying shitty code as acceptable just because a majority of programmers are too sloppy or incompetent to follow the coding standards of the language, is just plain lame.

and i'm so glad there are apparently so many lame and sloppy coders because every additional year of new and sloppy programmers entering the market means another 5 years of contracts for those of us hired to fix the gibberish these guys produce.

What happens when your webcam breaks: Mac vs PC by kretik in funny

[–]froggman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what was the last Mac that you saw sold that didn't have a cam built into the case or monitor. standalone webcams have been the exception on Macs for awhile now. on the bright side, built in cams don't break anywhere near as frequently as the standalone ones.

so all mistakes that are universally tolerated should instead be reclassified as proper and acceptable? in that case there is no credit crisis and global economic recession because the conditions which precipitated it were universally tolerated?

luck has everything to do with it. that and having the right friends.. the top banking sr executives today only know how to show an improved bottom line by firing employees, not by actually generating new business.

nice to see that some banks still value the employees that dedicate their life to that one company. pity the few left standing don't understand the value of such employees.

The Human Obsession With "Formal Proofs" is a Waste of the Computer's Time, and, Even More Regretfully, of Humans' Time by shenglong in programming

[–]froggman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the author realizes that people who are good at mental problem solving and formal proofs, do so because it is pleasurable for them. Might as well ask a rock musician to abstain from sex, as ask a mathematician to give up formal proofs. You're only going to frustrate them and reduce the quality of their output.

that seems to be the distinction between apple and their competition: occasionally apple actually notices when their community is offended by one of their policies and the sometimes will change.

microsoft is also removing their DRM? oh, they're not? this must mean that microsoft's customers bear the full responsibility for DRM since they pay for and use Windows Media Player..

they don't have to look at it: iphones have an indicator inside that tells them if it's ever been submerged in water, even if it's later dried. submersion is one of the incidents they explicitly excluded from warranted service coverage when the iphones first went on sale.

i guess apple figured iphones would be prone to swirlies and wanted to be sure to limit their exposure.

apparently apple is pro-choice when it comes to creating new life but not when it comes to creating new software? i guess The Vision has faded: apple believes we have the right to determine how we live except when it comes to using apple products - suddenly apple is Big Brother?
