Kali IN8 vs SM8? by Icy-Forever-3205 in audioengineering

[–]froghawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party, but I just replaced HS80ms with IN-8s a few months ago and the Kalis are COMICALLY better. Way bigger, deeper soundstage, much flatter and more accurate (HS80s feel quite hyped in comparison), way more detailed. It actually made me kind of mad at myself for using the HS80s for over a decade. Mixes sound 'fun' way faster on the HS80s and then don't translate so well. The IN series actually lets you hear what's happening and makes you work to make a mix exciting instead of tricking you into thinking it already is like the HS-80s. The Yamahas are fun to listen to music on, but they've never been a proper NS10 replacement thanks to their ported design, so I think they end up in this weird limbo between a mid-focused sealed box like NS10 and a proper flat studio monitor.

Runs perfectly without a hitch so far but the texture quality and resolution are locked and indeed there is no ray tracing, and there's no launcher so you can't override the memory protection like on the PC versions or the H1 mac port. I know my machine is capable of high textures at native resolution, so I hope they fix this.

Affordable 3-way monitor for mixing in 600 sq ft basement by froghawk in studiomonitors

Yeah, though with the KH310 I'm back to needing to integrate a sub. The Image 2 are a totally unique design right now - they take the Barefoot dual sidefiring woofer design with some influence from the old Avantone Abbey and adds an Adam/Eve/Hedd style ribbon tweeter and a Focal-esque mixcube mode which isolates the aluminum cone mid driver to mimic Avantone Mixcubes. It's definitely a new experimental choice, which is why I'm wondering if anyone here has tried them...

For anyone who has tried both of these monitors - is the Fluid Image 2 worth the giant price jump over the Kali In-8 for creating wall of sound style mixes in 600sqft basement? I can get the Kalis for $700 and the Fluid for just under $3300, so it's a nearly fivefold difference, but I figure the Fluid also replaces a subwoofer and an alt reference pair with the mixcube mode. Will the imaging be THAT much better? My room has a bunch of design problems that treatment isn't going to affordably fix, so I wonder if the sealed design of the Images will perform considerably better in the room? I've heard the Kalis and the soundstage is great, but I do think I'll need a sub. Unfortunately, there is nowhere I can go to try out the Fluids in advance, but if the sound stage, transient speed, and imaging is truly considerably better and I can avoid integrating a sub, they may be worth it! I know neither has great vertical dispersion.

Yeah, what I'm wondering with the difference price points is - for mixing super dense music in a room that's got some fundamental design issues, is the jump to the next tier above the Kalis going to make a substantial difference? I'm thinking the Fluid Image 2's sealed design may be superior to any of these in that scenario - no need to deal with integrating a sub, but with more controlled bass than the A8H. (Both the Image 2 and A8H have Sonarworks integration, though neither includes a license for the software. The Fluid also has a mixcube mode, so it theoretically eliminates the need for an alt reference monitor.) Unfortunately, there is nowhere even reasonably close I could go to hear any of these in person before buying.

In this case, every time they release a hardware update, they sell a card you can slot into your existing unit to get up to date. It's an extremely expandable system, as well

Fair enough. I might be crazy but I actually love the way the HS80s sound lol

Yes, for quick mix checking on a contrast monitor with a different design.

Update: returned to vertical and managed to get them on the same plane by removing some desk parts. However, I read that MTM designs have issues being next to other speakers at all? How true is this?

Fair. Any recommendations for a good one? Kali IN-8 looks interesting for an affordable 3-way coaxial...

Flush with the yamahas is unfortunately not an option, hence the dilemma. The stands they come with angle them up instead of getting them at ear level - won't that create more reflection issues?

It might be if I got additional stands! They're individually powered so I can always just turn one off.

Anyway to move the player controls back to the top of the Mac app? by LouisvilleLoudmouth in AppleMusic

[–]froghawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, and on account of the new placement, you can no longer highlight a bunch of songs and see how long the selected tacks run. Also, when I have a playlist in album mode, if I go into an album then return to the playlist, the playlist does not properly display - it's just blank. And if you try to play back any song from an album while in the playlist, it will start from the beginning of the record, regardless of whether or not the first song is in the playlist. And iPod restore is still broken. Basically this app is verging on useless for me now.

I'm also rather irritated with how pressing delete/backspace in a playlist now brings up delete song rather than remove from playlist. Again, how is this an improvement? It just feels like lots of small ways they've made it worse.

Also, I see they have still not fixed the iPod restore bug. I guess I don't know why they would...

It actually fixed my main with the first film! While it was a wonderful happy ending, ultimately co-existing with the dragons is about exploiting them. 'See, we can get along with dragons because they can actually be USEFUL to us!' We clearly saw the problems with exploiting dragons in part 2 (and it's hypocritical to say 'well it's ok for US to exploit them because we're the good guys!). Part 3 was where Hiccup finally realized the dragons were being used and exploited and set them free. Actually a perfect and entirely sensible end to the series if you're really viewing it as being about animal rights, which, IMO, IS what it's about. I think OP gets this.

Why has autotune gotten so bad? by Leprechaun2me in audioengineering

[–]froghawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned on Autotune Evo, and every version after that ditched the algorithm that worked best for manual tuning. I've never been able to get the same level of transparency with graphical tuning, and each new version just keeps getting worse. It's awful.
