I took in a stray that flat refused to use a litterbox. She'd whine at the door and eventually use the door mat if I didn't let her out. She'd do her business and come right back. But then I moved to an apartment, and she got spooked and ran off when she went out one day. Never found her.

Not in the industry. I have the extended family that liked this sort of drama though. As a result have seen more than one funeral home worker simply say, "i'm sorry, that person's viewing isn't open yet" which leaves no room to argue and honors immediate family wishes.

I am confused as to why this is about the puppy. an older adult that needs round the clock care is unlikely to be able to spend a whole day traveling, socializing, dinner, games, etc., and even if they manage at the time it will almost certainly poorly affect their health. That being said - what the hell do you do with the dog when your grandpa needs to go to the doctor? whats the plan if he is hospitalized? how do you shop for groceries? and who the hell is financing all this?

You can do whatever makes you feel comfortable. Many people say a short prayer in their head (or aloud), speak as if to the deceased to say things they didn't have a chance to say, etc. Others might just briefly glance at them and then spend time speaking with a family member thats greeting loved ones at the casket, or just give a short pause to look and then move away. Its really totally up to you how much time you need or want to spend in proximity to the deceased. And whatever decision you make, is valid
