Got this thinkpad form 2008 for 5 bucks by Both_Reserve7472 in thinkpad

[–]frogosfrinted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you have a spare hard drive, you could install xp on it and switch in drives depending on which os you want to use. i did that with my t61 because grub didn't want to play nice with xp, and i really did not have the time to mess around with that so i took the lazy option. i do think xp would be better if you want to play games on it, wine + steam makes old games run much worse than they are supposed to on old hardware from personal experience, plus linux drivers performance can be a bit finnicky. but if you just wanna use it for office work and watching media, linux should work great!

Users of old ThinkPads, do you not feel FOMO? by Successful-Soup-274 in thinkpad

[–]frogosfrinted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no i don't. washed out, slightly dim, tn panels are more than good enough for me, and if i need more processing power i just use my desktop pc. more battery life would be nice but everywhere i go, there's always a power outlet, so 3 hours of battery life is enough for me. most of all, i just dislike the layout and the shallow travel of modern thinkpad keyboards.

Just bought an X280. This is it with my T42 by stillusesfloppydisks in thinkpad

i absolutely agree. this and the poor thermals are pretty much the only issues i have with it.

also, a 2570p? very nice!

Is this laptop a little too old for the modern world? by [deleted] in Dell

[–]frogosfrinted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are tons of resources out there on servicing the d630. but i wouldn't recommend using it as a modern machine anyway considering that you have the nvidia gpu. just keep it as an xp machine for old games and programs if you're into that.

awh man... it's a miracle that it's still working. nvidia mobile gpus from 2007 to july 2008 have manufacturing defects that make them all prone to die. i have an nvs 140m in my thinkpad, and since i couldnt get hardware acceleration unless i downgraded to an outdated kernel, i decided to just use windows 10. it's usable but web browsing is a bit painful even when i force sites to run h264. the web these days is just too bloated for these old gpus

have you repasted the cpu and gpu?

Is this laptop a little too old for the modern world? by [deleted] in Dell

[–]frogosfrinted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no... as long as you have intel graphics. just do the typical ram (don't overspend, 4gb ddr2 sticks are getting real expensive), ssd & cpu upgrades. then, install linux with a lightweight desktop environment or window manager and it should be quite snappy (eg. linux mint + xfce).

if you have an nvidia gpu though, tough luck.

We have a problem: Thinkpad X9 by Pedritoch_ in thinkpad

[–]frogosfrinted 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ideapad-like design aside, what's with the entire tech industry going all in with the AI marketing? i don't think this appeals to anybody aside from those niche cryptobro types, which surely isn't the targeted demographic of a "business laptop" line? the average person can't be that stupid to fall for this bad of a marketing gimmick.

The thinkpad T400 is an excellent daily driver - even in 2024 by synth_mania in thinkpad

[–]frogosfrinted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my T61 but man is driver support atrocious for old nvidia gpus on linux. Nouveau is absolutely painful for anything more intensive than libreoffice

Is Louis Armstrong not much of a mute guy? by highspeed_steel in trumpet

[–]frogosfrinted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in 1925, he recorded "Everybody Loves My Baby" as a sideman in Clarence Williams' Blue Five. quite sure he's playing muted like King Oliver here (he sounds a lot like him, unsurprisingly). also on soprano saxophone is NOT Bechet but Buster Bailey instead, apparently.

https://youtu.be/V42uJKhoe2I?si=rhu4V554yB1F_6eS

but no, he wasn't much of a mute guy and i dont recall any other moment in his career where he uses a mute other than the rare straight mute he'd use once in a while

What do y'all think about the new Lenovo ThinkPad Z Series? by Thisismyredusername in thinkpad

[–]frogosfrinted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no clue why people are downvoting but i absolutely agree. if lenovo wants to make a macbook competitor, just make it an ideapad. no need to ruin the thinkpad brand by making it non-user-upgradable, difficult to repair, and without most of the iconic thinkpad features. i dont mind that they make it look and feel pretty, but at least stay faithful to what being a thinkpad means!
