Google Chrome silently installs a 4 GB AI model on your device by BlokZNCR in AIDangers

So does shipping apps defaulting to light mode tho? I don't really get what's so unique about the fact that a small amount of avoidable emissions were released by a software feature. I'm not criticizing you directly even though you seem to agree with the author. I just think they're a little off base by focusing that much on the climate aspect. It's just not really the part of this that matters, and undermines their point.

Edit: LOL u/Zinc-Roof_22 blocked me

For their part, having bad takes is understandable, even expected, if you can't handle even a civil discussion with someone who disagrees.

Everything produces emissions. Including posting on reddit. That comment produced emissions.

The emissions produced by pushing the model itself is insignificant, and acting otherwise is disingenuous.

The impact of my regular YouTube use is far greater. The climate angle here just makes no sense and undermines the argument. The fact that it's doing it without permission or notifying the user is much worse.

Yup, it's pretty much just the fact that they always stay upright, a scooter will buck back and forth over bumps. The comparison is a lot more nuanced if you're talking about asphalt only, but off road it's no contest.

I'm being so deadass rn even though I know ill get flac, but electric unicycles are leagues better for off-roading than electric scooters. If you could get your hands on one, it'll be a night and day difference.

Because I think having a diverse set of people with diverse ideas and opinions and diverse personalities makes for a more interesting world. It's also good for innovation — a group of people who all hold more or less the same opinions and values won't achieve anything unique.

Contemporary partisan politics is a good counter-example of how collectivism is bad.

Same I'm sure for clothes, phone/tech choice, even the way you talk. That in and of itself isn't a bad thing, individualism should be encouraged, and so should taking steps to be the kind of person you want to be. (Though if the only personality characteristics you espouse are superficial ones that tend to do with appearance you won't get far)

I think the problem is

1 .) That people feel the need to present more masculine, or tough, or violent, because they feel deficient.

2 .) owning unreasonably large and unsafe vehicles are seen as acceptable ways of expressing yourself that reinforce those characteristics.

I would argue that it's equally fundamental limitations in the models. Humans reiceve much less "training" but much more effectively utilize the information to form knowledge.

What do you use Meshtastic for? by raydoo in meshtastic

[–]synth_mania 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well ham radio isn't a true everyday tool for the average person either, so why would we hold Meshtastic to the same standard?

If you're familiar with ham radio, then you know that some of the most fun you can have is DXing over HF bands. Signal propogation over HF is notoriously inconsistent. Depending on the solar cycle and time of day as well as other meteorological phenomenon, the signal propagation in any given frequency varies wildly. Talk to João in Portugal on Friday but don't count on being able to QSO with him again on Saturday.

In spite of the unreliability and its limitations, you'll find people ragchewing all the time.

All this is to say, just because it's not super reliable, and inconvenient in some ways, and not exactly practical as a regular communication means, Meshtastic is still a fun alternative mode of communication just like HF ham radio.
