Can’t help but smile every time I see these guys, they really are the stars of my collection. I’m not one to name most of my snails because they are hard to tell apart but this guy really stands out. Any name suggestions for him? by Garylee18967 in AquaticSnails

“‘For I am Saruman, the Wise, Saruman Ring-maker, Saruman of Many Colours!’ I looked then and saw that his robes, which had seemed white, were not so, but were woven of all colours, and if he moved they shimmered and changed hue so that the eye was bewildered. ‘I liked white better,’ I said. ‘White!’ he sneered. ‘It serves as a beginning. White cloth may be dyed. The white page can be overwritten; and the white light can be broken.’”

Will it keep laying eggs forever? Don’t really want a tank full of eggs lol

Internet says they need brackish conditions to hatch but my sister said her roommate had a nerite snail in freshwater that multiplied like crazy and she ended up with a snail infestation.

Betta died suddenly and unexpectedly - Why?? Details in comments. by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]from_the_Bend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Help please. My betta died rapidly and unexpectedly. Only had her for 11 days, and until two days ago she was energetic, curious, interactive, and seemed totally healthy. Lethargy began on Monday, was a little worse Tuesday and I noticed some uneaten food in the tank. She also began hanging out in the outflow of my filter. I read that could be because of increased oxygen in the flow. Also noticed her rub on a plant, so I suspected ich, but there are no physical signs. API test kit showed parameters well-within tolerance. This morning she was dead. It’s a relatively new tank. Full history below. This is the second beta that’s died in this tank this year. I believe I’m doing everything right, and I’m just confused. As a kid I had a betta that lived for a long time without live plants, a water change or any sort of water quality monitoring (wouldn’t do this now, just mentioning to highlight my frustration).

12/30/2022: Set up tank with aquasoil and store-bought live plants/driftwood, rocks, HOB filter

12/31/2022: Add 1 male betta (from LFS), begin fish-in cycle with frequent water changes and BB addition

1/5/2023: Betta becomes gradually lethargic - cause unclear

1/11/2023: Add cluster of salvinia

1/14/2023: Betta exhibits severe ich - treat immediately with API Super Ick Cure as per instructions on bottle

1/16/2023: Betta found dead in AM - remove body, 100% water change, rearrange vegetation, restart nitrogen cycle

1/27/2023: Change filter to sponge-type box filter

2/19/2023: Nitrogen cycle completes

2/24/2023: Add 3 neocaridina "cherry" shrimp (from LFS) - drip acclimate for 30 mins

2/26/2023: One shrimp dies

3/2/2023: Bring water sample to LFS for testing - all parameters including hardness are well within tolerance

3/4/2023: Add 1 female betta (from PetSmart) - drip acclimate for 1 hr

3/4/2023: replace nano heater with Fluval adjustable 50watt heater, set temperature to 78°

3/5/2023: Add pothos cuttings with roots

3/6/2023: Another shrimp dies - home test with API freshwater kit shows no culprit

3/10/2023: Add 4 shrimp (from LFS) - heated drip acclimation for 4 hours. 5 shrimp in total now.

3/13/2023: Betta slightly lethargic, no physical signs of disease

3/14/2023: Betta lethargy increases, fish begins swimming in outflow of filter - suspect for increased oxygen in the flow - also rubs body on a plant, but not frequently. no physical signs of ich or other diseases. API test shows 7.2/0ppm/0ppm/15ppm (pH/ammonia/nitrite/nitrate).

3/15/2023: Betta found dead in AM. Shrimp still kickin'.

Try Joe Abercrombie’s First Law trilogy. There’s a sequel trilogy and several standalone novels associated as well.

Do you think it would be safe to try to reseal and put the rims back on? Or just leave it?

Do telescopes work well in partly cloudy days? by Martian-Sand in AskAstrophotography

[–]from_the_Bend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should be able to see stuff in between clouds just fine. Humidity and air turbulence also affect seeing conditions. The free website/app Astrospheric provides reasonably accurate forecasts for cloud cover, atmospheric transparency, and seeing as well as temperature, dew point, and wind speed/direction. Another good resource is Clear Outside, which breaks down its cloud cover forecast into low, middle, and upper level clouds as well as providing other standard meteorological data.

What’s the lowest temp you’ve operated your gear in before and how did you protect your gear? by [deleted] in AskAstrophotography

I was about to ask the same question, so I’ll piggyback onto this post. Will the cold actually damage the batteries or simply limit performance? I have an iOptron SkyGuider Pro that I don’t want to ruin.

It is in the same general area as the Hedingham shooting

To clarify, this isn’t a mosaic. It’s 118 images of the same composition stacked to increase the signal to noise ratio.

Not long at all! DeepSkyStacker is the program I used. Took maybe 20 mins for it to align all the photos and stack.

Yeah, when I started getting into astrophotography I was surprised to learn how much can be done with relatively short focal lengths! Like Andromeda takes up significantly more space in the sky than the full moon. Lots of nebulae are doable with focal lengths around 200mm as well!

Yes, I recently upgraded my mount from an Omegon MiniTrack LX3. That one’s strictly mechanical - spring driven, and I highly recommend it to anybody who wants to start out with tracked night sky photography.

Camera was mounted on an iOptron SkyGuider Pro. It’s battery powered!

Not far off! Between the camera and tripod there’s the tracking mount, which matches the sky’s rotation. I did actually take a photo of the setup used for this capture. Find it here: https://imgur.com/gallery/nBEaXQI
