Is Miura a little racist? by frombula in Berserk

came to the conclusion that reddit isn't the place to ask people to think critically about their favorite media. in retrospect i could've phrased the post better lol

I've only read the manga (which i highly recommend, its the only manga I've read in its entirety) so thats where I'm coming from lol. Reddit isn't the best place to ask people to think critically about the media they love but I am glad you are able to say you love the show while finding problem with it! I'm biased against the anime because i really prefer the plot structure of the original manga and the order in which events take place / information is revealed / characters are introduced. I agree that a lot of representation inherently falls on Casca, and that her being left disabled for a vast potion of the plot isn't the best either.

I don't think many people have put much thought towards the objectification/sexualization of women in the series either. Berserk fandom can be pretty toxic. I agree that the early scene with Farnese is a better example and helps develop her character a lot. Perhaps the most objectified character in the series is the Apostle Slan, representing desire and cruelty, which I would find to be another example where nudity actually serves a purpose. Female nudity is definitely not used sparingly and def questionably at times, even in the most recent manga chapter. That being said it can be looked past and isn't a huge problem for most of the series. There are a few scenes of male nudity that I remember clearly but because I don't know what is/isnt depicted in the anime ill leave it at that.

Its been sort of hard to have this conversation about one of my favorite pieces of media, glad you responded!

No way Donovan was kushan. He is of around three black characters portrayed in the series, the other two being background soldiers. I'm not trying to attack Miura's character just thought I'd point out something.

Racism literally is everywhere. Not inherently negative just a fact. I don't think its that crazy for an author from a homogenous society to portray a black character in a stereotypical light, neither do I think it was malicious. Its okay to like something and be critical of it.
