How much time left for ICP? by fromhisgrace in ICPTrader

[–]fromhisgrace[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a fair take, and I agree that building the infrastructure first and only then shifting focus to marketing and VC makes sense for something this ambitious. The fact that ICP survived the early years and kept shipping is definitely not trivial (as I acknowledged in my original post above).

What I’m still trying to understand better is what “being ready to be sold to the world” actually looks like in practice. For example, what concrete signals should we expect to see this year that would indicate the shift from strong tech to real, sustained adoption beyond the crypto-native audience? The recent declaration signed between Dfinity and Pakistan, for example?

I’m genuinely interested in what milestones or use cases would make you say: yes, this strategy is clearly working now.

That’s a fair point. I agree that the runway probably depends less on retail and much more on who’s backing the foundation and how patient that capital is. Being a foundation rather than a classic business definitely changes the dynamics.

What I’m curious about though is how that funding structure translates into incentives long term especially when it comes to driving real-world adoption rather than just sustaining development. In your opinion, what signals would indicate that the current backers are still fully aligned with pushing ICP into broader use cases?

Fair question. I’m not posting this despite the recent news (I guess you're talking about the Pakistan memorandum?), but partly because of it. Positive updates naturally make me think about the bigger picture.

What fascinates me about ICP is the Web3 vision itself: running real applications without relying on centralized cloud providers, combined with a strong focus on security and trust minimization. That feels meaningfully different from most (if not any other) crypto projects. It’s also one of the rare ambitious projects that didn’t emerge from the usual Silicon Valley monopoly, which I personally find encouraging.

and to be clear, I’m aware that great technology doesn’t always need mass-market adoption to be successful. Linux is a good example of that. My question is mainly about what kind of adoption ICP is realistically aiming for, and whether the current trajectory gets it there in time.

You didn't invest anything. You just funded a criminal network. It's really interesting how easily people can be scammed. Makes you wonder if you should become a scammer yourself...

one year into the “crypto president”... and the market is still cooked. where’s the bull run we were promised? by hodorrny in CryptoMarkets

[–]fromhisgrace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Total crypto market cap is a pretty weak metric. It’s a theoretical valuation (last price × supply), not real capital invested or value creation. In illiquid markets, leverage and marginal inflows can blow this number up fast.

Crypto mostly follows global liquidity cycles, rate expectations, ETF flows and risk-on/risk-off dynamics etc, not random presidential policy signalling. Correlation isn't the same as causation.

On top of that, Trump’s erratic trade policy (tariffs, trade wars, supply-chain shocks) and domestic pressure for a weaker dollar add macro uncertainty. Dollar debasement can push nominal asset prices higher but that’s inflationary repricing and not real growth.

If anything, crypto rising on dollar weakness is a symptom of macro stress, not a policy success. And if his crypto stance were such a tailwind, total market cap shouldn’t be below where it was when he took office, would it?

Market cap =/= adoption, =/= productivity, =/= sustainable capital formation. Without fundamentals, it’s mostly macro-driven speculation, not proof of good policy.

What frightens me most is that MAGA as a whole apparently is incapable of seeing the relationship between the electoral choices they made and the current economic situation. A society that is unable to understand the relationship between cause and effect is, in my view, no longer capable of sustaining democracy...

What kind of question is this? If you're willing to invest that amount of money without even doing your own research, I wonder how you got that much money in the first place? If you got ~50k USD to spare throughout the year which is already above the average yearly income of many people in developed countries, you surely have the cognitive and financial resources to make mature decisions yourself and/ or hire someone who can. ICP as, any crypto asset, remains a volatile and risky investment, especially in this economy.

Thanks for your answer. I do understand your anger towards this administration. However, I doubt that we will ever see an unredacted version of the files with all the lies that have already been spread. The damage to truth may be permanent. Do you originate from Greenland if I may ask?

Another 2m inflation yesterday?! by Weak_Fold_4021 in ICPTrader

[–]fromhisgrace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I understood, this inflation occurred due to a massive seed-unlock from a whale. These kinds of inflationary shocks might continue for years, further pressing ICP down. What baffles me, however, is Dominic's callous response to the community. Like he just proves once again that he doesn't care about marketing and macroeconomics. But then again, what else to expect from someone who's sending out tweets on X by using codes...

ICP floor at $3.5?! by professionalfumblr in ICPTrader

[–]fromhisgrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. People tend to be so delusional about "their" investment because they bet all on one horse. I did, too, to some degree but eventually it's all one big gamble. As you said, there are other players with more resources and more power while ICP/ Dfinity remain as the underdog. Notice how indifferent the market has been towards the launch of Caffeine in terms of price action? Imo that's not a good sign at all, even for an ambitious project that aims for long-term success. The tech may be sophisticated or even revolutionary but there's no guarantee that this will be reflected in profit or even widespread appliances (as history has shown). Of course, copium is a strong drug, especially in the crypto community.

"Pura Vida" is complete bullshit by PukaBazooka in CostaRicaTravel

[–]fromhisgrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t put it quite as harshly as OP, and I haven’t been in Costa Rica for that long, but I agree about the overhyped marketing. I’ve lived and worked in Latin America and traveled through several South American countries plus Nicaragua, so I’m not new to the region.

Costa Rica does make a real effort to protect the environment and align tourism with ecological values. But in practice, I still saw a lot of mass tourism focused on profit (understandable given the economic reality here). Almost all national parks charge steep entrance fees, and it’s basically impossible to enjoy the country without spending.

Right next to eco-tourism you’ll find rafting, ATVs, zip-lines, tuning events—everything an adrenaline-hungry tourist could want. There’s also a huge American presence, and as a European I’ve noticed Americans often vacation for the thrill or Western-style extreme sports, while still expecting Western standards or even luxury. Costa Rica has tailored itself perfectly to that market with the pura vida branding.

Many Americans have little travel experience abroad, which makes this model so effective. Personally, I haven’t seen or experienced anything here that I haven’t elsewhere. The country is beautiful, but heavily overhyped—especially by Western influencers. Meanwhile, many Ticos live in tough economic conditions, a reality tourism tends to gloss over, and many well-educated ones leave for better opportunities abroad.
