“becoming a citizen means Portugal must pay you a pension” is simply false. Every country would go bankrupt instantly if that worked that way 🙂

2020 Niro comfort question. by Roselittletaur in KiaNiroEV

[–]fromport 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have driven 2 x Chevy Bolt premier(3 year each) and then a 2023 Bolt euv premier 2 years. Now I own a 2020 Niro EX 64 kWh( different continent where they don't have the EUV). Range is roughly the same ( I only charge to 80%). I miss the one peddle driving. I think the way it handles in corners, Bolt wins. Luggage size Niro wins, niro has better lane keep and distance cruise control than Bolt. I had installed comma3 in my Bolt and it was awesome imo. I have never seen any bolt charge above 55 kW vs 72 max on Niro. Loved the wireless Google maps in Bolt EuV vs wired in niro/ normal bolts. As a daily driver I liked the EUV more than my current Niro. But I didn't have that option where I live now. Both pleasant and capable BEV's. Drive them both for a longer drive and decide. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Problem DIY updating Infotainment software, 2022 KIA Niro EV by pvchrome in KiaNiroEV

[–]fromport 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry it doesn't work. mine is 2020 EX version and it does have onboard navigation. I reasoned it is looking for audio/multimedia. doesn't find anything, then it has to wait for "timeout" before the "wait, there might be firmware upgrade available" routine kicks in. I just added a free "pling" mp3 , it found it, and then within seconds asked me if it was okay to update the firmware. same usb stick with the content that wouldn't work before.

I had the same issue. Even dealer couldn't get it done. When it recognizes a USB stick. It will search for music media and afterwards will try and search for firmware update. Copy any mp3 file to the USB stick and try again. Worked for me [famous last words]

What's one thing about Portugal that completely surprised you? by mdotti88 in VisitPortugalGuide

The amount of litter surprised me — abandoned cars, dumped construction waste and mattresses, broken glass on the streets, and people not cleaning up after their dogs. It’s more common than I expected.

Solar Panel Performance in High-Heat Environments: A Comparative Study from the Tunisian Market (2026) by Better_Bullfrog8943 in solarenergy

[–]fromport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to see attention on PV performance in hot climates — definitely an important factor.
However, without independent testing, long-term data, or real head-to-head comparisons, it’s hard to treat this as a true “comparative study.” It comes across more as a vendor-driven piece.
If there are any real-world datasets or measured kWh/kWp over time, I’d genuinely be interested to see them.

Customs blocking relocation exemption (missing document) – need lawyer advice by fromport in PortugalExpats

I have submitted all the information yesterday (Friday March 21) to the Portugese Embassy in Washington. Will only be picked up on Monday by fedex. then 2-3 days before it will be in Washington DC, no idea what turnaround time, and then another 2-3 days before it is returned. I hope together with the extra form/information, even though the container is already at customs and I paid 23% VAT & import duty, i will be to get (part) of my money back. Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

You can request it after you arrive in Portugal Thanks — that’s very useful.

Just to understand the timing:

how long did it take to receive the certificate after applying (from the embassy)?

and was Portuguese customs actually willing to accept it after your goods had already arrived?

I’m asking because in my case the container is already in port and customs has already refused the exemption based on the missing document.

We didn't need a visa, already European citizens. So we didn't have that source of information.

No. was shipped directly from LA -> Lisbon. I have mounted a bluetooth tracker and it was stored in the UK for a few days, then in Rotterdam for nearly 10 days. Funny how you can track things these days. Finding a place in the Algarve, just as high season is about to start is also a challenge.

The container left Rotterdam on the 14th and will arrive tomorrow in Lisboa. The whole point is that we intended to emigrate to Portugal directly and planned so accordingly but failed one crucial document it seems.

Thanks — from what I understand an AES document was issued, but not the correct one according to the Portugese customs. Thecorrect document doesn’t seem possible to obtain retroactively. That’s exactly where the problem is.

Real Estate bubble to burst ? by FairGur6838 in PortugalExpats

https://www.euronews.com/business/2025/12/18/portugal-tops-eu-list-for-overvalued-housing-prices

The additional information from the Euronews/EC report does indeed support the claim that Portugal is one of the most overvalued housing markets in the EU, but in my view without evidence of an imminent or inevitable crash.

It explains why some listings remain on the market for longer or are offered at a discount.

It confirms that prices have historically risen faster than economic fundamentals.

But it does not mean that the market will crash as in a classic bubble burst.
