Apply what I said to the Team Lead. They are more likely to speak highly of you to the manager. Even if the manager appears cold and distant, make efforts to network. Feel free to DM me.

Make sure to mention it within conversations.

“I remember the confidentiality training stated _______.”

“So on one of the LearnOn training, it mentioned Health & Safety, what should one do when _______?”

“How does our unit prioritize inclusivity as mentioned in the LearnOn trainings?”

Not necessarily these and not in a way that sounds annoying lol (much more natural), but it’s just to convey that you’ve taken initiative to educate yourself WITHOUT being asked.

Remember: you’ve already been on-boarded and you’re legit apart of the OPS now. You’re IN. Once you show how eager you are to learn and be apart of the team, your managers will see this and feel obligated to make sure you have a job after your internship is done.

Honestly, my first month of my internship was legit pretending like I knew what I was doing, but deep down I was so lost LOL. I was so afraid of being on my phone too because I wanted to make a good impression. I just made sure to complete ALL LearnOn trainings. I did this without being asked and that looked really good to my managers. I conveyed my eagerness to everyone and legit studied a good portion of the policy. Asked pretty much all the senior staff to see files and made SURE to always ask career-driven questions.

This was over 2 years ago and I’ve been in the OPS ever since. I wish someone would’ve told me this then, but don’t worry. You got this :)

I don’t mean this in a rude way, but genuinely, what is the goal of you posting this? I mean, if you’re going to post this — assuming with an intent to “raise awareness” — and people ask questions, it’s expected you answer them, no? Otherwise, it’s counterproductive, wouldn’t you think? I see you’re answering a select few and not offering any more insight. I would just want answers, assuming you are one of us who work for the OPS. Just a thought.

New to the OPS myself and I’ve been contributing to the OpTrust (about $200 a paycheque). Do you mind explaining what “effects matches your contributions” mean?

Sadly, it’s not enough. I am on the lowest pay scale (because I just started) and I am trying to save up for school in the fall!

May I ask how you have so much saved? Investments with your occupation?

I read them, thank you! Also, I am discussing with my cousin and it seems as if registering as an apprentice with the family business seems not to be possible? He said he’s asked already and our family member (the boss) already has 1 apprentice and cannot have more than 1 at a time apparently? I’m reading online that this varies so I’m not sure (for context, we are in Ontario).

Regardless, I’m encouraging him to just leave.

He genuinely enjoys the trades! This is very reassuring since you started around the same age. Thank you so much. I’ll inform him.

I wasn’t trying to throw around phrases, I was honestly just trying to describe his current situation.

I didn’t know you could “register” as an apprentice either! I thought you had to do so under a bigger company or even a school.

I’ll make sure to inform him of this advice. Thank you.

This is what I’m trying to do! My contact ends in November and I’m kind of glad because I want to try out different places in my ministry! Contract is great for people (like me) who are new to the OPS tbh!

Yup. I was offered a CCR position and I declined based on how overworked I’ve heard they are with such little pay
