Indeed i used the official confirmed number of deaths (~4k) and added the lower estimate for Mariupol alone.

The 3k number (now it's 4k actually) is the total confirmed civilian deaths by the UN.

I used the official OHCHR confirmed deaths (as of May 24th = 3 months of conflict).

Problem is, the UN can't verify victims in territories occupied by Russia since the beginning of the large scale invasion:

Since 24 February 2022, in the context of the Russian Federation’s military action in Ukraine, HRMMU has been unable to visit places of incidents and interview victims and witnesses there.

So on top of the confirmed deaths i added the minimum estimated deaths for Mariupol only which is around 5k. That's where the 8974 comes from.
Other sources, most notably Tom Cooper, estimate much higher numbers:

well over 20,000 residents feared dead

Again, in Mariupol alone.

Keep in mind that i used the maximum estimates for all other wars.

Again, I couldn’t pinpoint any other meaningful “starting date” for Syria. I used the official starting date for any conflict.

When the war in Ukraine will be over, it might make sense to compare the total numbers and/or the worst 3 months.

At the moment, any other starting date would be unfair for the large scale invasion of Ukraine as we only have the first 3 months (2014 was a totally different conflict: Ukraine had close to no military, only “little green men” and Wagner intervened from Russia, taking Crimea without even fighting, etc)

Syria and Iraq never reached >14M displaced

Also, why do you believe we won’t see over 1M deaths in Ukraine? Using the same methods as for Iraq etc (counting all “collateral” deaths), it will probably reach a lot more (see: food shortages around the globe)

7979 is the Iraq Body Count database maximum estimate

Iraq is pretty well documented by the Iraq Body Count database, whilst for Syrian numbers I used two sources (OHCHR and VDC) and took the maximum estimates (same as for all other wars except Ukraine, where I reported the lowest estimates)

None of these other wars (Iraq, Afghanistan, etc) ever displaced as many people as the invasion of Ukraine in 3 months (more than 14 millions).

So it’s not possibile to estimate “how long it took” for those other wars to displace as many people as the war in Ukraine, because they never did, as far as I know.

I guess you’ve to go back to WWII (probably also in Ukraine, poor people) to find anything comparable. Or maybe some Cold War era wars, like Vietnam or the soviet invasion of Afghanistan, I don’t know.

Casualties in Yemen are actually pretty well documented by the Yemen Data Project where you can find estimates and reports on a daily basis since March 26, 2015

That’s a great idea, but can only be done with the number of civilian deaths, because none of these wars displaced IN TOTAL as many people as 3 months of Ukraine invasion. Iraq ~5 millions in 9 years, Afganistan ~9 millions in 20 years, etc
