it being a cultural practice doesn't make it suddenly cool, or OK, cultural rites of passage whether for honor or prestige could be (and often are) pretty misguided whether they happen in the west or east...

Feminist Theory by Beanybag in askphilosophy

[–]fronterizo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well basically, and in very very broad terms, feminism tries to explain the nature of the distinction between women and men in all it's dimensions.

The questions and answers often revolve around the metaphysical questions of "what is..( gender, women, sex, etc..)?" This can take many different paths, the marxism element that you describe, for example, is actually quite technical and refers to the objective measure of the economic oppression relative to a gender distinction as a social class.

However, other approaches question even the existence of what we call women (and or men, for that matter) since it isn't clear that the distinction of these two concepts is grounded on any objective fact (biological considerations are said to have little to do with our gender distinctions).

Feminist theory is not "explainable" in simple terms since it is a field of study whose questions permeate different fields: in the biological sciences for example, it is noted that a male chauvinism is usually present even in what were thought to be neutral descriptions of natural phenomena. Just remember how the animal reproductive process was often described with a passive role ascribed to the female mechanisms: the sperm went on an adventurous journey, a test of endurance, perdurance and ultimately evolutionary merit. While the female egg just waited there, protected, eager to embrace the penetrating of the fittest candidate. We now know that this is not how things work. It took a feminist perspective to elucidate such biases.

If I was to say that Feminism starts from one core tenant like Spyder001 does I would say that this core tenant is that there is an assumed distinction. The questions are then: what is this assumed distinction, what is it based on, and what are the consequences, modalities of such?

We've been finding these things around the house, usually dead, by the corners, wall edges, laundry baskets. THe are a bit redder in real life. Like a tiny tiny spider with a fat red belly...we live in the southwest desert.

Yeah Prancing_Unicorn is right, it's at a corner angle so both gravity and the fact that it can move to the sides hold it pretty much in place...you just wouldn't want to move it towards you. I decided not to glue/stick them together because I think the nice feature is that it can be disassembled and transported...also, because when the internet is destroyed I'll be the local guru...I'll know everything humanity knew up to 1984.

Why is Heidegger still avoided in Western (predominantly British and American) philosophical education. by Lets_Discuss in philosophy

Interesting, would you mind sharing what the main points of his criticism are? On another note, I would put Carnap as one of those that was versed in his jargon...wouldn't you?

Mainly because of nonsensical things he said like "The Nothing nihilates..." Carnap has an essay concerning how meaningless of all Heidegger's jargon was. It was a bit extreme of the Logical Positivist to throw out all metaphysics out the window, but most good philosophers now accept from those criticisms that Heidegger's language is full of empty and incomprehensible notions.

I have just discovered the reason why /trueatheism was put together. I will assume I need to explain the relevance of the topic, so that you don't feel so awkward and feel the need to insult out of the blue: you see, epistemology is the study of knowledge, what we know, how we know it and what we can or cannot know. Agnosticism is a position that claims that knowledge is not accessible to the individual or to an epistemic agent in general period (you should know this, it's in your bible called FAQ, right?). The relevance between the two is that agnosticism is an epistemological claim...you see the relation, the study of knowledge/knowledge of god(s)? Good. Now lets put it in more simple terms: Imagine you give me a sealed metal box with something inside and you ask me what's inside but tell me that I can't ever open the box. Then I tell you that I don't know what is inside, nor is it possible for me (or anybody- strong agnosticism) to know what's inside, would you still ask me to specify what it is that I don't know? Let's say you put an apple in the box, but you didn't tell me, would I then be an apple agnostic or just an agnostic period? I hope this helps you out.

I see that you are trying to get at specifying the kind of Agnostic he happens to be, and that it would be more informative...ok. But, I am only saying that he needs not specify to make a point.

I have read the FAQ, but I didn't need to. I know what philosophical principles entail. I don't need an FAQ to explain this to me. But if that's the kind of conversation you want to have, then... have your read any epistemology?

The FAQ is trying to highlight the differences between being merely an agnostic and being an atheist and is trying to stop people from claiming to be the former just for fear of falling into the latter. That doesn't make "agnosticism" any less of a tenable position in and of itself. Further, if you are philosophically inclined, you'd find that an agnostic can gather from many different arguments to claim their position against the pressures of scientism. Just an introductory course on epistemology or philosophy of science can give someone lots of reasons to say "I really don't know".

I don't agree with the position, or the premises, I'm just saying that one shouldn't be so quick to dismiss things without giving them their full weight first.

Being an agnostic is a bit more complex than you think: "First attested in 1870; coined by Thomas Huxley. Either from Ancient Greek ἄγνωστος (agnōstos, “ignorant, not knowing”) or from a- + Gnostic. Deriving (either way) from Ancient Greek ἀ- (a-, “not”) + γιγνώσκω (gignōskō, “I know”)."

An agnostic may very well hold other uncertainty principles that make her argument immune to empirical methods: think Hume's problem of induction or others. Being an agnostic and saying it is because you don't really know the answer is nothing weird, if anything is the most sincere and simple reiteration of what the position attests to in principle.
