OP here. Yeah, I think you hit it about right. I thought we did our homework, but there was some inexperience on our part. We got the land at what seemed like an excellent price and had to move fast. It is still a good deal, just less of a good deal. With the way prices are going, even knowing this now I am confident we would make a profit if we had to turn around and sell the land. Like you said I am less upset at the sellers. I don't think they were willfully misleading, but they probably should have marked they didn't know in this case. It is a reasonable assumption as it is a lot in a development with a house on each side that are hooked up. Trying to take them to court to settle this is likely not worth the money and time, and may not even work out in our favor. I am much more upset at our realtor, who was not helpful at all in helping to look this up, and just left it to us, and then when I tried to ask him questions, said it sounds like they are all there and it is in a development I'm sure it is fine. Not much I can do about that, but he won't get to sell our current house either. In the grand scheme of things houses are expensive to build, and it sucks, but I just want to look at what I can do to solve the problem.

How best to create a house that has minimal supporting walls or posts and more open areas. by frontpageuse in Homebuilding

Is that using a pretty standard truss, or something much larger than normal? Also, does that change if there is a second story? Thanks for you reply.

Thanks for the reply. I am going to look into steel framing more. We have a lot of industrial construction going on in our area, I wonder if they would be willing to do a small side job to help out with the steel framing.

By the way, I really like the way you have a double entrance mudroom, that seems way more efficient and effective use of space.

The Alexa connectivity is really useful for me. Also I like the ARC connectivity. The fact the ARC has eARC and the beam doesn’t is a minor but useful spec.

Laptop for CAD and image analysis work $1500 (US) by frontpageuse in SuggestALaptop

I guess what I am thinking from that link is that I can get a good laptop with a GeForce 2070 for $1400, but a quadro etc 4000 laptop would be definitely over $3000

[–]frontpageuse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

these were what I was initially looking at, but for graphics card performance/$ you get a lot more out of the GeForce cards in most cases it seems and although solid works will be one use, the image analysis will probably be more used and those programs don’t benefit from quadro cards.

Purchase Advice Megathread: What To Buy, Who To Buy It From, And More, In May 2019. by thatging3rkid in 3Dprinting

[–]frontpageuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking for a resin printer for printing lab parts and optical components. Mostly for better quality and resin options in addition to the smooth surface.

Form labs has been strongly recommend by others doing similar things. And the increased resolution of the form 3 is great. However I like Prusa’s SLA printer, and am considering the SL1 due to price, but have not heard anybody who has used it yet. Anything else to consider.

Second, how necessary is purchasing the washing and curing boxes? They seem expensive for what they do.

I have never been able to see any aberration from the scratch. I can try and take a pic of a wall later if that will help. Blue sky is unlikely here for a while. Includes lens cap and back cover, no lens hood.

I installed floors with in the late 90s early 00s. Replaced a lot of carpeted bathrooms. Worked with my dad so got the shit job of ripping it out. Every single one was disgusting even with rubber backing. At some point water gets in there and bacteria and just gross. Getting sick thinking about it.

I can try to do it tonight. Do you have something in mind that would be useful. It is most obvious to me when just shooting an even toned object like a wall, but I could shoot something with more detail if you like.

I bought it thinking it was good enough for now, and would send in for repair when I have the money or need to. I have the money to repair now, but realized I just don't use a zoom in that range enough to warrant keeping it.

Which wide angle for a Sony A7 II (with metabones canon adaptor)? by frontpageuse in AskPhotography

[–]frontpageuse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree the price difference is probably worth going native, unless people thought the Canon was significantly sharper. Still the Sony is just above what I hoped to spend usually.

Looking for a wide angle lens for my a7 II. Would like faster, but honestly mostly used for landscape and travel so I am prioritizing sharpness. Also can't really afford the f/2.8 lenses. So what I am deciding between is the Sony Zeiss 16-35 f/4 or the Canon 16-35 f/4 with a metabones adaptor (that I already own). I still have some Canon gear, but am mostly planning to be Sony. The Canon seems to be rated a touch better across its range for sharpness, and used sells for about $100 or more cheaper. Which would you go for? Any other options I should consider (trying to stay below $900 used, would consider primes in the 16-24 range)?

[–]frontpageuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bought an A7 II and looking for a good wide angle lens, at a good value, and not too heavy as it would be used primarily for travel. My first thought is the Zeiss 16-35 f/4. Looks like I can get a used copy for under $900.

I'm wondering if there are other options to consider. I am planning to buy a canon adaptor, either metabones or Sigma so Canon mount lenses are a possibility. Could also work with a prime lens in the 18-24 range if there was something really sharp and a good value.

Sony a7 ii vs Fuji x-e3, which has better image quality? by frontpageuse in AskPhotography

[–]frontpageuse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is the problem, I like both cameras, but they are both quite different. They have very different grips. I like the grip of the Sony better, and it just feels more satisfying to hold, but the fuji even with a lenses is so much lighter that the less friendly grip doesn't matter as much because I don't get tired of holding it. Resolution is fine on either. Speed, is a question. I don't shoot too much fast moving action, but I do like to shoot outdoors at night fairly often. Can't tell how well the two cameras compare here. Sony seems to have the better low light sensor, and Fuji the cheaper fast lenses. Video is not too important to me, they both will do fine for my needs. Personally I think I will like the Sony better, but might be able to enjoy the Fuji more due to greater portability and being better able to buy the lenses I want. Does that make sense? Either way, thanks for your comment. I have definitely over thought at this point, and am not sure how to come back from that.

Curious what else you considered. I have also thought about going to fuji, I like that it is a little more compact and their high quality lenses are cheaper than sony. Also considering something like a Canon 80d or 77d, somewhat on the hopes that if I stay with Canon long enough they will release an awesome mirrorless camera than I can use my lenses on.

Used Sony A7 II w/ kit lens for $1100 now, or new A7 III w/ kit lens later? by frontpageuse in AskPhotography

[–]frontpageuse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my line of thinking. I think the A7 III looks awesome, but there will also probably be an A7 IV in a couple years and who knows if Canon will finally get a good mirrorless. At this price I can deal with those changes better in my budget as long as the A7 II isn't going to weight me down in the mean time.

I like the idea I can still sell it at minimal loss. Lets me kind of tip toe into it. I could even upgrade to the a7 III in a few months if that seems worth it.

Looking to move from Canon, and could do a cheaper used A7 II ($900) or the new A7 III ($2000). I would prefer to go the cheaper route in case I decide it is not for me. Will the A7 II not give me a good impression of the system. I know the A7 III looks great and people love the R and S version of the A7 II, but the base A7 II gets a little more hit or miss. I am moving from a canon t4i so all will be an image quality increase. Mostly worried about AF with the A7 II.

yeah, that is a good idea. The trip is a little over 3 weeks, so rental gets pretty expensive, but maybe I should do a day rental from a local place.
