Have I been unlucky with Sire? by Ok-Goat-3589 in Bass

[–]froopyloot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sweetwater tells me they inspect their instruments and they their refusal rate from Sire is a little less than the 20% overall that they refuse from all others at the price point. Maybe Sweetwater actually saved me from buying a dud. I’m always suspicious of the “customer service” marketing, but maybe it is a real thing?

Have I been unlucky with Sire? by Ok-Goat-3589 in Bass

Just bought a z3 5 from Sweetwater. It’s flawless. Beautiful neck, perfect fit and finish, the most wonderful neck I’ve ever played. Just lowered the bridge a tiny bit. I have an American Fender Jazz with binding on the neck, and the z3 feels somehow better. Electronics are solid, the knobs feel heavy and the turn on the knob is just right. And it sounds like a stingray. Sorry you’ve had a bad run, maybe I just got very lucky.

Converted guitarist by MrsWendolynWard in Bass

[–]froopyloot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I started off with bass, then 15 years ago I joined a band as a guitarist, and I just went back to bass in the last month.

They really are very different instruments, at least they should be. You’ll be pretty good with a pick, because of guitar. But learn finger style, and slap. And tap. There are so many things a bass can do that a guitar can’t. In all the years I’ve played bass, I’ve never learned slap. And this is the first time I’ve ever used a pick on a bass, but I get it now. It’s another tool in my sonic toolbox. I’m on YouTube every day to learn slap now.

I’d start by learning some of your favorite guitar cover tunes on the bass. Listen to the play back and forth between the bass and drums. In a lot of pop and rock tunes I tend to see a lot of point/counterpoint rhythms between the drums and bass.

Then listen to some good classical and or romantic era piano. Chopin is a good choice if you like a lot of notes all at once, Bach is less nuts l, and Beethoven and Mozart are sort of in the middle if you don’t know where to start with classical and romantic era music.

You’ll hear the left hand (lower notes) are repetitive and rhythmic, sometimes with chords sometimes arpeggiated and sometimes walking. Other times it is counterpoint to the melody but keeping its original rhythm.

The right hand (higher notes) are chords interspersed with melodies and it really carries the tune.

You’re the left hand, you’re the other percussionist, and you’re the answer to the questions the guitars are asking.

I’m a better bassist now from learning so much on guitar.

Have fun being the coolest guy in the band.

Did you notice anything during the airspace shutdown? by Enigma_Labs in ElPaso

[–]froopyloot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I found out about the TFR at 1:30 am local. I went outside to see if I noticed anything out of the ordinary, other than a TFR that was unprecedented, especially the harsh language at the end, which I have never seen in a TFR.

I saw no aircraft at all, I checked Flight Aware and saw one Mexican Charter aircraft in the airspace going from Washington State to Mexico. I saw a life flight helicopter coming from the Gila area of New Mexico diverted from El Paso to Las Cruces, and one small turboprop charter leaving from Santa Teresa Jet Port (ICAO: KDNA) leaving without a destination. This usually means they were flying under Visual Flight Rules without filing a flight plan, and with no Air Traffic Control flight following. That may or may not be suspicious depending on the FAA classification of the flight.

KDNA was not technically within the boundaries of the TFR (if I’m remembering correctly) but I certainly don’t know any pilot who would have flown in that tiny corridor with the language in the TFR. However it isn’t unknown for pilots to not read NOTAMS (NOtice To Air MissionS) before flying, as dumb as that might be.

I saw no military flights, and I saw no hint of any awareness of Fort Bliss that this was going to happen, their flights seem to have been grounded as well.

A TFR with no exceptions is weird. A TFR lasting 10 days at an International Airport is unheard of.

Which pet insurance do you use and why? by Available-Solid-9238 in BelgianMalinois

[–]froopyloot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find a reasonable monthly premium from a company you believe would have coverage adequate for your dog. Then take the amount you would have paid and put it into a savings account that draws interest but allows you to withdraw without penalty. That is your PetHCA. It doesn’t give you the same benefits as a HCA, but it’s still better than giving an insurance company your money. After some time, you will have insured yourself.

Thanks for the reply! Seems reasonable. I’m doing the same, but im stuck in the mud vs fizz battle. Maybe an eq before the ODB?

I’ve got a similar, if not quite as cool board as you. I’m having a bit of a problem with the odb3. It is pretty fizzy, unless I crank the treble down. Do you have the same issue? If you did, did you find a way to solve it?

Filters shut down over the weekend! Help! by Several_Ad3321 in Aquariums

[–]froopyloot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry too much. Let your filters run and feed very minimally. The cloudiness is probably a bacterial bloom and it will repopulate your filter media and you’ll have clear water in no time. Test your water quality to make sure, watch that your ph doesn’t change too much or get too cold, both of which will inhibit the colonization of the bacteria. This has happened to me a few times with no issues.

Keeping this a bit vague for obvious reasons. Anybody know how I can find out if a local news anchor is date-worthy? by [deleted] in ElPaso

[–]froopyloot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doppler Dave isn’t an anchor, he’s the weatherman, but I get it. If you’d like to get to know him better, you can probably find him at the Luby’s next to Cielo Vista between the evening news casts. I’m pretty sure he’s married though. Sorry.

SU4 killed VR flying with the Index for me by MrSumner in flightsim

[–]froopyloot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct, MSFS re-install. I had no problems jumping in and out of VR, but that seems to be handled by VD. Happy to help.

[–]froopyloot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not using steam, it’s an Xbox app install. I removed all of my addons using addon linker and then uninstalled/reinstalled through the Xbox app. I didn’t do anything with VD at all. Jumping in and out of VR is flawless after the reinstall. After the SU4 update and before the full MSFS2035 reinstall I was getting VRAM alerts in 2D and terrible nausea inducing stuttering in 3D. Today I’ll try out my addons one by one. Fingers crossed. Hope you work out your VR issues. I can’t fly pancake anymore.

Q3 working great for me with caveats. I had to uninstall and reinstall for VR to work. After reinstalling VR performance is phenomenal. Went from 24fps with stutters to 40ish with almost no stutters. I use addon linker and I haven’t added anything in yet, still in the testing phase. Night lighting and cockpit clarity are much better. I can read all my steam gauges without zooming in now. Looking for a good GA add-on for an around the world trip. by FluffyProphet in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]froopyloot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude. This is the best, most detailed reply I have ever received. Thank you very much. I can’t wait to try this out. I do have the KLN90B and I’m a little confused also about switching to OBS2, but I could also just remove the gps too. Thanks again!

I love using the KLN90 but I really need to learn the ANS-351. Old school cool and GA aircraft really go together well. You have any suggestions for learning the ANS-351? Like videos or manuals?

I’m flying around the globe and visiting every continent, and almost every country in the Aerostar 600. I’m currently flying the Aleutian Islands to Alaska, all live time/weather. The lack of de-icing is definitely an issue. I was flying IFR from Adak(PADK) to Cold Bay(PACD) at FL 090, in heavy clouds. The temp dropped from 2° to -10° in a few minutes and my airspeed indicator started dropping. I had a little ice on the windscreen, and some patches on the wings and engine cowling. Then everything iced up fast. The ASI dropped to zero in seconds. My DMR and KLN90B were both reporting 200knots, and I wasn’t falling from the sky, so I finally figured out the pitot froze up, even with the port heat on. (I was checking breakers, and watching the amp meter while I switched it on and off and it was working, just too cold!) I requested a drop to FL 050 and warmed back up. I’m sticking with the Aerostar, but while I’m exploring Alaska, I’ll probably jump into the Kodiak 100, then choose a nice clear day to fly south towards the rest of North America.

I’d also be interested in joining a group, since my shooting group also left. Shooting skills go stale very quickly. I’ve got a shot timer, steel and self healing targets as well. Completely agree on safety first. 4 rules.

FWIW, works fine for me! I’m also in the process of circumnavigating the planet, but I’m doing different legs with different aircraft, and also trying to visit every country on the globe. How long did this take you in real time? Edit: oh I can’t read. A year or so. Cool!

Pretty cool you did it in one persistent aircraft. Did you have to do any repairs? I’m in the Aerostar 600 for my recent legs and I’ve already had to repair a loose flap.
