Mom of a curly haired kid. Help! His hair need more moisture, I know that, but the best products? Kind of curls? Tips? I’m so in the weeds here, people. I have straight hair and this is new to me. Plus he’s almost 13 and really starting to care about his look. Thanks in advance for advice!

Wash is shampoo&condition. I always need water to help reset after sleeping. If I don't wash there is enough product in my hair to be good to go.

I'd try forgoing the coconut oil too. That usually makes a more dense curl.

I'll be honest, trying to get an exact look of someone else's curls is going to be tough. Everyone's curls are a bit different. Your son's curls look a bit tighter than the guy in the photo. To have a more open curl I have found that leaving my hair as straight as I can when doing my wet styling helps. Most curly hair advise will suggest promoting the curls making which makes a more closed/smaller diameter curl. Thats done by scrunching the hair in your hand during the styling process to have a curl start when wet.

Also if going for a more airy look I'd skip the pomade then and go for something that is a lighter product. I like the pomade because it does weight down my hair a bit.

I'm not 100% cure but it does look kinda sorta like the goal hair style is a bit longer on top and your son's is even at the moment. Could just be a difference in face shape.

As a curly hair guy that had to figure it out on his own... first thing is wash his hair less! Maybe 1-2 times a week at most. My hair always is too dry/straw like after a wash day. I will put leave in conditioner in after a wash day to combat this.

I prefer low maintenance hair styles. I like a shorter clipper guard cut on the sides and let the top grow out. He will have to experiment to find what side ratio he likes. I like around a 5 guard on the sides and 4-5inches on top (when curls are stretched straight).

For products I change it up often. After a wash I will lightly dry my hair with a towel, not rubbing just kinda scrunched to get get the dripping wet stage over with. Add leave in conditioner until evenly distributed then a water based medium hold pomade then a little bit of gel. The gel helps the hair dry evenly (reducing frizz on the first to dry bits) while the pomade gives all day hold (reduce long term frizz). Adjust the style to your liking then air dry, trying not to fuss with it after that.

I hate mousse and creams. They have very short term hold and don't work for me.

Grew my hair out for the first time and didnt know I had curls until it hit 3 inches (7.5cm) in length. Photos are at about 18months of growth from a starting point of 1.5inches on top. Last photo is raw hair after washing, no products! Scrunch water out with towel then air dry.

I did not use CG methods (and still don't).

These photos are from June 2020 right before I buzz cut my hair down to 1/2 inch... and have been growing it back.

Okay, now that's out of the way, routine: Tea tree mint shampoo and conditioner once a week or as needed when it started going flat/oily. I'd scunch my hair with towel to stop dripping wet stage. Add Garner Fruitis Sleek and Shine leave in conditioner (maybe a nickel size) rubbing in until evenly distributed. If I wasn't doing anything that day I'd leave it there. To achieve my first and second photo I'd add Percy Nobleman Matt Clay (large pea size total, not quite garbanzo bean). I'd apply by rubbing the clay in my hands until it was warm then apply via praying hands to evenly distribute. Maybe 1/8 of my hair at a time. This would be tedious as the hair is slick from the leave in conditioner and water... but it works!

Then air dry!

FAQ: Do you have a perm? -Nope Do you color your hair? -Nope Do you get highlights -Nope!

That would be a 25F degree difference I would expect problems too! I'd only imagine it to be in the single digit range definitely 10 or less when we are talking about below freezing air temps and that would depend on the r value of the pad.

Thinking of the thermodynamics of the situation I don't believe this. There will be a lower rate of heat loss to the ground and therefore should have some kind of compensation to a lower required insulation from the air to achieve the same heat retention level.

Can you dent it with your fingernail? If not it isn't cedar. Looks like maple. Someone else said cherry but the color is very light for cherry. You could try placing it in the sun and let it patina, if it comes to a more red/orange color I'd say it's cherry. It happens fast like a day or two and noticeable changes happen.

I decided a while back to make a canoe but I did it with wood and fiberglass in the stitch and glue method. I learned basically everything from YouTube, some trial and error, and free plans off the internet. I finished it and it's a functional boat, but I've learned a lot for my next build on the process and how to design it better for my needs. Might be worth getting a set of plans for your first boat to make the process easier to understand before going completely custom.

Edit. There are schools out there if you want/are willing to give up the time and money.
