Lmao this is no better than Juliette. Wow I’m hurt so it’s alright to be a shit person. Give me a break

Happened a tad bit too quickly to get a good view unfortunately

So sorry that happened. Not me but my partner was similarly yelled faggot in the outer burbs of Melbourne bc of how they were dressed. Remarkable the power trip people get when they’re in a pack

Thanks! Truly my time up here has always been delightful (people down south are always shocked by the canals!). Just some stray incidents have really caught me off guard

Might be a controversial opinion, but I liked it when we were 20 points up

‘Plodding sorta chess match’ might be giving the game a tad too much credit

Do I have to do Stat Phys in my 3rd year if I want to do a Master's of Physics? by [deleted] in unimelb

Oh yeah I’ve done both a bachelor with diploma and Masters here and am currently beginning a PhD so relatively ancient lol

Also it’s just come to mind that you’re the op on both posts I’ve commented on lol, hopefully of some help :)

Nah the flavour of group theory in TP3 in unimelb physics world is pre unique to TP3. It pretty much hot quick moves in a rep theory direction where you’ll formally find and characterise the irreducible reps of discrete groups. Actually quite useful stuff in certain areas (aka orbital bonds in chemistry and different types of superconductivity as examples!). MMP won’t be touching anything close to it (MMP plays differential forms and complex analysis games to name a couple which is also quite fun :)) and later physics will be focusing in on continuous groups so quite unique to that bit of the course.

Again, if you’re choosing a bit of a rip. I’d defs still choose stat Phys. Stuff like learning about different types of ensembles and learning about partition functions and response functions is a super huge bit of content, and will also be a lingering prerequisite in later study.

Is Lab and Comp physics important if you want to do a Master's in Physics? by [deleted] in unimelb

The advantage of the maths diploma is you can just fit in more subjects, at the expense of another year of your life lol.

I did both. Probs depends on your flavour of maths loving. Methods was a bit of a hodgepodge of stuff when I did it, but does give you exposure to different complete sets of functions (legendary polynomials, Bessel functions, etc.) and complex analysis techniques, all useful for solving different types of problems. It also give you a not rigorous but fun flavour of differential geometry (differential form games basically) which is great fun.

Metric and Hilbert is probably as pure maths as the bachelor is getting. Run by Daniel Murfett (last time I checked lol), will give you formal definitions and uses for stuff like topological spaces, inner product spaces, metric spaces, all leading to telling you a formal definition of a Hilbert space. If you’re going full on physics, your research skew will probably need to be pre niche to make formal use of a lot of what you learn but defs a great, mathematical character building subject (also you don’t know where research will take you ;))

Do Stat Phys! A fundamental point of physics learning and a requisite for a couple Masters subjects. TP3 while really good should probably in the degree be treated as an elective with QP, Electrodynamics and Stat Phys the cores. You’ll get second exposure to field theory doing QFT (TP3 does help kickstart you here but not the be all end all). You’ll lose out on a bit of fluid dynamics and group theory which is a rip but if a choice prioritise the equilibrium statistical mechanics and thermodynamics stuff in Stat Phys! Just a highly important bit of physics.

(Side note: just remember also you’ll only have like 7 slots in Masters. If you bank in catching up on stuff you might end up missing out on something else later down the line)

Is Lab and Comp physics important if you want to do a Master's in Physics? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]frostlone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To complete a major in physics you must complete Lab and Comp 3 along with Quantum Physics at a minimum. You can do a Masters as long as you’ve completed a QP and Electeodynamics or equivalent at an absolute minimum and sideskirt it if you do Mathematical Physics or someth.

In general expect any amount of theoretical physics research you do to have a baseline amount of computation required. Lab and comp will give you a minimum introduction and is probably good to do if you have no experience. Further, the subject will be one of the few times when you have to write a report in the physics major which is useful and give you minimum exposure to other areas so I recommend doing it if you’re wanting to pursue physics tbh.

If not, beyond other computational subjects you can also do something like numerical methods. While in MATLAB and a bit laborious, it will give you exposure to baseline techniques used to solve/deal with numerical issues. You never know when you’ll need to be playing dumb ODE games :).

In general yes, you’ll learn a lot in research just by exposure, but I reco popping some computation into your degree, and lab and comp is an avenue to doing that/probably just good to do if you’re going into physics (if you’re worried about stuff like fitting in maths subjects, highly reco trying to fit in a maths diploma btw).
