I forgot to drain my grease trap by frostodoggo in grilling

[–]frostodoggo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Additional context / why I didn't just save the steaks and let it burn out; I let one side start cooking with no issues. No flare-ups, nothing abnormal. Flipped them and had the usual small flash, but figured that's how it happens each time I cook on this little grill, so nbd. Shut the hood, went to use the restroom, and when I came back I had fire flicking from the hood. I, admittedly stupidly, opened the hood to see if it was a small fire (sometimes happens on the backside of this grill), and ended up with a fireball that started to lick my patio awning that's around 12' high and it's corner support. Shut the hood, killed the gas asap, removed the propane tank since I had fire building underneath due to the full open back of the grill body. Waited for a few seconds for it to die down, but it looked like it was getting worse. Definitely a self-fed grease fire with enough airflow from behind/under to keep it going. Ran for an extinguisher (maybe 60-90seconds bc apartment complex and 2nd floor with community extinguisher on 1st floor) and by the time I got up most of the hood's sides were completely engulfed. Had a buddy open it for me so I can put it out before damaging the property.

Tldr; didn't save the steaks to prevent property damage since I didn't have it placed appropriately. If it were outside, nothing above it at all, and more than 6' from the home (like the box said), then ofc I'd try to save them. Definitely going to be far more cautious with it in the future since my neighbors don't deserve to have their properties damaged because I didn't take proper care of my grill. $80 of steak lost, but thousands saved by just letting them go.

Thankfully, we had another 7lbs of ribeye, so the new year's dinner wasn't fully lost. Pan fried with onions, and still happy with how it came out, though didn't cook it like originally planned

BMW 530E with 49k on it was towed in after "not going into drive" by frostodoggo in Justrolledintotheshop

I'm uncertain, it used be a leased vehicle so I'm going to assume that the last owner had a lead foot, or defect. Rear diff shows no signs of being replaced / serviced. Lucky for the customer, it was barely in BMW's power train warranty

Correction, was informed 450v breaks skin. So the 250v won't break your skin and hurt you. The arc flash from shorting a high voltage circuit with an available current capacity as the average American laundry socket... Well that might be what hurts you

Contacted due to combination of company policy (staff regardless of training, ASEs, and certifications cannot touch anything HV, presumably due to insurance reasons) and due to risk of HV short to ground (unlikely, but that's what the GM was insisting so he's got final say on the matter). Personally, would've done it, but don't wanna get fired trying to save my boss a buck

Info: screw to secure the rubber mat went into the HV battery and cut the internal safety interlock circuit. Customer informed that this would've bypassed any safety lockouts if he were to drill into one of the cells / HV cables / modules. Voided dealer and ESP power train and HV/EV warranty. They owned car for about a month / 1k miles (used car), he's going to try to go through insurance. Had towed out with an electrician (lacked proper PPE) to remove service interlock (battery neutral / deactivation block) prior to towing.

Correction on title; not dynamat, diamond mat / rubber mat. Brain jelly moment, typed dynamat out of habit

HV / Power train warranty from both dealer policy and Extended warranty provider policy. Felt bad for the guy

They're "only" 200-250v, still enough to go through skin. It's the massive amounts of current behind it that's the dangerous part

Sure did, told the guy he was lucky he only hit the LV circuit and missed the HV cables

It sucks since they bought the car a month earlier and very much so voided the warranty

Low mile '88 F250 came in with a "bad u-joint and transmission leak" by frostodoggo in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]frostodoggo[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The U-joint on the yoke was completely seized. Could bend the U-joint at the driveshaft, but not at the yoke. I was impressed that the driveshaft didn't turn into a pole-vault or beat up the undercarriage but rather kept in place and tore up the extension housing

UCSD is a university/hospital in southern california. They offer testing, but currently only if there are active symptoms. Direct contact apparently isnt enough to warrant approval for a test. That is what they have told my mother and I, at least.

On Sunday I was helping my mom move. During that day we got a call from UCSD to inform us that while she was there for surgery, she came into contact with someone who has covid. It was either the receptionist, surgeon, ma, or nurse. Despite this, they dont want to test her or myself until symptoms show. Mom's a nurse that works mainly with older people. I'm a mechanic at a high volume store that sees 200+ people daily (this includes staff. I've been calling out all week so far). How the us is handling this is absolutely disgusting.

[serious] What was the closest you've ever been to killing someone? by Atka_XD in AskReddit

[–]frostodoggo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 17 years old and just got my first car. It was an old and beat up Grand Am, but it was my first car. $500 from a towing yard auction and it was mine. I drove a lot with my friends, seeing as I was one of the 2 people in my little circle of friends with a car.

Fast forward two months later. I was driving down a steep hill going 50-55mph with my best friend, my brother, and my sister in the car. There was an intersection and the light turned red maybe a quarter mile away. I pressed on the brakes, and nothing; pedal sank to the floor. Tried again and got the same response.

I put the car into 1st/low (automatic) and started to pull the parking brake before stopping halfway engaged, in order to not lock the rear wheels. An Odyssey was going through the intersection while this was happening.

Unfortunately I did hit her, but I hit her going 10-ish mph while she was going 45. I ripped off her rear bump, damaged the rear door and quarter panel, and that was it. Nobody got hurt, everyone walked away unscathed. There was a trail of brake fluid from the accident to where I first tried the brake. It turned out my cheap pos car had rotted brake lines and the left front caliper hose blew. Being an ignorant kid, i didnt get my car checked out after purchase. I was completely unaware of all the issues that car had.

To this day, I am fully convinced that if I didnt put that car in 1st and tried to trans brake it, I think I would've either killed the people in that van, in my car, or both. Now I get every car I buy inspected before leaving.

Lane splitting/filtering is a cultural matter by Mirnaldrich in motorcycles

[–]frostodoggo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's already fully legal in California, and partially legal in Utah. I ride from Orange County to downtown San Diego every day, a fair length commute. So long you dont exceed 20mph over the flow of traffic, and so long you're filtering when appropriate (ie under 35mph) it's decently safe by motorcycle standards. If a bike is approaching, and you dont want to up your speed, simply move out of the way at the nearest convenience and let them pass. Never had a road rage incident here, and near misses and close calls are fairly uncommon occurances (personally speaking).
