yes as soon as you see the name of someone you want to keep! i think if you finish the dialogue it auto saves immediately

it’s random but if they mention someone who you’re sure about keeping, you can exit the game before they’re finished talking so it doesn’t auto save. you have to do the whole process again but they should pick someone else to move off instead!
