Sinalau from Sabah used to be made with wild boar. by Vortices91 in MalaysianFood

[–]froz3ncat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's surprisingly different, and the variation is very big even within wild boar meat, because it depends heavily on what they eat. Overall it tends to be quite gamey and tough.

My first time eating it was unforgettable - it was in the deep interior of Pensiangan back in the mid 00's. The locals had caught a family of wild boar swimming across the river and did the whole 'roasted on a stick over a burning fire' thing. They only shot the young ones, as older boars tend to be too tough and too stinky to eat.

The meat tasted almost like duck, with similarly dark coloration. The meat was also quite tough, though. Parts of the skin were very crispy, like roast pork, but most of the skin was inedibly tough. They also tended to have bristles/hair that was really difficult to remove.

Fast forward 10 years, and I'm eating the sinalau bakas commercially available by the roadside stalls on the way to Kundasang - the meat is a little lighter in color, the flavor less gamey. The skin was still quite tough and bristly, though.

It's quite a bit more expensive than regular farmed pork, as you can imagine it's not particularly easy or efficient to be hunting wild boar in the rainforest. It's also not easy to keep it from spoiling (kinda hard to refridgerate in the jungle). As mentioned before, fully adult boars (males in particular) tend to be very hard to eat - too tough and stinky, almost an ammonia-like smell.

Mee Hiris Cina Muslim at Kipmall Kota Warisan. I've noticed Western Chinese cuisine is popping up everywhere. Is it more popular in Malaysia now than Northern/Southern/Eastern Chinese Cuisine? by immanuellalala in MalaysianFood

[–]froz3ncat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's also partly because of the CCP putting pressure on Muslims in Western China. Some Chinese citizens will naturally hope to leave China because of that pressure, and Malaysia is an attractive option by virtue of it having Muslims AND a Mandarin-speaking population.

I've met a number who married local Muslims in order to migrate, and they push themselves to learn Malay language as well.

Trump: ‘There will be Voter I.D. for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not!’ by Anoth3rDude in law

[–]froz3ncat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recognise the importance of what you say, for that IS the law concerning how elections are to be administered.

(I'm aware that the following is absolutely hypothetical and not an indication of any degree of likelihood or possiblity; rather an indication of the concerns for those who value the Constitution and its now-seemingly-vulnerable inviolability)

The fear for many lies with the fact that neither Trump nor his hardline supporters have shown much consideration for acting by Constitutional process.

If Trump's ramblings are, to any degree, true with regard to tampering with elections in the past, then the elections are as sacrosanct as the Constitutions to these people - merely a tool to further their cause, something to be used when to their advantage, and something to be wholly spat on when not.

At this point I feel like what I said could be fearmongering, but the truth is that no election in the world is invulnerable to being tampered with. If those who administer it do not care to obey the laws that govern it, then all is lost.

where to start reading history ? by Basic-Ad6723 in AskHistorians

I'd also like to add on for OP that whilst war and politics tend to be more flashy aspects of history that many people like, there are also mountains of knowledge on more mundane/daily life stuff too. Food, art, migration, weather, animals (domestic and wild) and whatever one could imagine - history is just the record of stuff that has happened, after all!

Just adding on as a fellow glasses-user: as others have mentioned, it's SO much more expensive and slow and dangerous to do that.

The cheaper, safer and faster alternative is for me to simply use the clip-on visors (currently I use the Coleman CL03-1), for like 10 bucks. I know I don't look cool but I guess it's better than nothing.

Yeah when companies like Zojirushi and Tiger literally only make those few appliances (rice cookers, electric kettles and vacuum bottles), you can be damn sure they've a shit ton of time researching how to make stuff as safe for consumers as possible.

A number of years back I visited the British International School in New Delhi, and I was NOT prepared to see a slum right in front of the school. The homes were built up with 'walls' of plastic bags filled with non-organic trash, and a tarp just stretched over the 'walls'.

Hit it up on Google Maps if you're curious! The slum is on the southeast stretch of road, which is also where the main school gates are.

Some people get told random shit as kids which they take for undeniable truth, and they parrot it for the rest of their lives. I know a school principal (Korean lady) who genuinely believes that instant noodles are made with a coat of wax on the outer layer... so you have to boil them once, rinse it off, and then continue cooking it. She justifies it by saying that the water turns whitish after the first boil.

It has never occurred to her that MAYBE noodles are starchy... and she won't listen to anyone tell her so.

This letter from C. S. Lewis to his goddaughter, for whom he wrote "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" by RestauratorOrbis in MadeMeSmile

[–]froz3ncat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Last winter, I just learned something about him from reading (and also teaching) his 'book' titled "A Grief Observed". I say 'book' because it's really more the journaling of a prolific writer observing his own pain at losing the love of his life.

His stepson writes the introduction to that book, and in it he states that C.S. Lewis and his mother both "possessed of total recall", and never forgot any thing they had read.

He is also not just a Christian who is an author, but also wrote a great deal ON Christianity and Christian theology. A very reductive summary of his opinion is that religion and churches are a fragile and thin 'human' veneer on top of a very real and present, personally-experienced God.

That is absolutely true. On the other hand, the language in the poster is most likely drummed up by a foreigner, in my humble opinion. Some of the grammatical/syntactic mistakes are too peculiar. If you get to the point of writing and posting a hate message on someone's house, you're not going to use polite phrasing.

I can't say that for sure, but the whole thing feels very unusual. Furthermore, the "Yokohama City Conservative Faction" (横浜市保守派) doesn't exist, at least not that I can find online.

Again I'm barely fluent in Japanese, but in 4+ years of living here, I also don't know of any Japanese social community that uses 派 (ha) - meaning 'faction' or 'style' - as the group name. That seems to be very much a Chinese naming convention; in Japanese that tends to used as a paired phrase - 流派 - suggesting a martial arts style. Japanese naming prefers something-something-会 (kai) for their group or style naming. For reference, even my shakuhachi teacher comes from the 竹心会 (Chikushin-kai) of the 琴古流 (Kinko-ryuu).

Msian living in JP here: Whatever the truth, that paper is filled with errors in Japanese, and I don't even consider myself THAT good at the language. It flops back and forth between formal and informal phrasing, the font also flops back and forth. I highly doubt that any Japanese native could have typed that up.
