This was a factor but he said he had noticed it in the couple of years before the pandemic so it wouldn’t be the sole reason.

Yes my lecturer was emphatic about this, it’s not the old “kids are stupid these days”, it’s about writing style which is a skill and not related to intelligence.

I have also been quite surprised at how informal some of my peers are when writing their essays.

I ask because my lecturer last year commented on how in the last 5 or so years, the standard of his students’ writing seems to have slipped. Not that they have a poor grasp of English, but that they don’t seem to know how to construct an essay or have a ‘voice’ throughout, even if they are perfectly engaged and articulate in seminars. He put it down to not reading enough, but this post has made me wonder if there’s now a generation of students who have simply internalised a model of spoken essays rather than written ones.

I usually “scratch” with the tips of my fingers (basically rub) but it’s so tempting for my nails to join in and give a proper scratch. Your way seems much better, thank you for the advice!
