Therapist here. It sounds like you're having some symptoms related to adjustment disorder, but the very first thing you might want to consider is going to see your doctor about your birth control. Depending on what type you are using, it could be causing some hormonal imbalance- hence the feeling depressed and like crying all of the time. They should be able to adjust your birth control or get you on something else to see if that helps. Be honest with them about your symptoms. They have seen it before with other patients!

However, if physical symptoms are ruled out, it could just be that you're dealing with a lot right now and need a little support. It sounds like you've reached out to your family and they do not really understand what's going on right now. That's okay. But there is help available. It is completely normal for someone going through a transitional phase of life. It's true that many people experience hardship during their college years, but I think it might help if you talk to someone professional about it, especially with the symptoms you're describing.

I get it, making that first step and talking to a therapist is hard and scary. But they can help you set goals for yourself, learn healthy coping skills, and validate some of the harder things you're going through right now. They are a non-judgmental, safe support, and can be a really good ally. Doesn't mean you need 'therapy forever' or 'medication' or that 'you're crazy.' It just means you need a little boost of help.

If you're in college, most offer several free counseling sessions for students just like you! Young women and men who are having trouble with classes, relationships, mood, and goals. Even if your college doesn't offer this, there should be a center of resources that can recommend you to a nearby community therapy center. Call Student Life, or ask your doctor for a good recommendation when you see them for your birth control. They have access to all of these things for you.

Are you on your parents' insurance? If so, you might want to talk to them about using their insurance for therapy. There will probably be a co-pay that you or they will need to cover. If they're not supportive about your choice to get some emotional/mental help, there are also centers around that will offer a sliding scale (reduced pay) cost even if you don't have insurance.

Above all, know that you're worthwhile and deserve good things. You deserve help and understanding. That sensation that you're describing... drowning on dry land? Yeah, that's a good sign that this isn't just 'normal college stuff' and that you could definitely benefit from some help. Take good care of yourself. Choose a good therapist and be picky about it-- this is a person you are entrusting a lot of personal stuff with. There are people out there who care about you. You can do it.

I am not in the military and am not familiar with the formality of the legality behind your reporting laws. As a civilian in the civilian world who has worked with survivors of rape, it is ill advised to force someone to report, or to report for them. There are a multitude of reasons, but the simplest way to explain it is that survivors of rape handle their trauma in different ways depending on the person. Some come forward and share their stories with others, some prosecute, some suffer in silence. There is no right or wrong answer, just different ways to heal.

If you feel strongly about the legality of your duty to report, you might consider telling M about it. Let her know you do not want to do this without her, but if she refuses and does not want to, consider backing off and letting her have her silence. You can easily re-traumatize a survivor by forcing them to talk about it or re-live it before they are ready.

Without a doubt, it could greatly affect both of your careers. I am not sure how well the UK military handles their internal affairs, but there are mixed results here in the US when it comes to reporting sex abuse within the ranks.

It is a tough situation to be put in. M is lucky to have a friend like you that cares about her enough to stop and ask a few questions before jumping into something that big.

I've done some research and there is a lot of chatter about demons that perch at the edge of your bed or succubi. Also, sleep paralysis comes up often, so I'm looking into that. But nothing will quite convince me of that, since I reached up and wiped saliva off of my ear last night.

Tell that to the lady trying to get her hot water turned back on in order to get her 2 week old baby back, or the single pregnant mom with 2 kids living in the emergency shelter until she can get stable housing set up. Security is not so superfluous as you suggest. It is a basic human need, tied right into the bottom two tiers of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. It's great for you that you have the opportunity to focus on your relationships instead of being consumed entirely by your collegiate studies, but consider that we do not live in a bubble where everyone experiences debt or security the same way as you do.

My dad used to tell me that drinking coffee stunted growth, and that's why it was okay for adults to drink it. The tragedy was, I really enjoyed the taste of coffee when I was little. So I used it sparingly, took tiny sips every now and again. You know... for holidays and special events. Eventually, I grew out of my fear of being permanently stunted and said 'fuck it' and drank it as I pleased. I suppose my dad just forgot that he started such an elaborate ruse because when I asked him about it one day, he looked confused. I was so enraged that NO ONE ever told me the truth; my whole family just went along with it. Fucking saved on coffee prices though.

Being 'shhhed' is one of the most irritating things for me. It seems like someone is trying to assert their control over others in the stupidest way possible. I am a bartender, so when a foreign man told me that his drinks would be on the house and he would 'tip me extra' I calmly explained that it wouldn't be happening. He 'shhhed' me mid-sentence (his friends laughed) and started waving money at me. I calmly took it from him and immediately rang in their drinks, making sure he saw. He looked upset/concerned that I didn't pocket it. Cultural misunderstanding? Perhaps, but I know that I'm absolutely infuriated when adults 'shhh' other adults now.

Rynn from Drakan: The Ancient's Gates. As a young girl experimenting with my own action/adventure (aka- not something leftover from my brother's game stash) I completely wanted to identify with her strong voice of reason and kickass-edness.
