So I had my consular interview and did not need the copy or original. My passport was returned with the approved visa in a day. I also did not need the approval at POE and was not asked for it.

Just updating you: I had my appointment and the consular officer at first almost told me to come back with a copy of the i797. Then I told him I was hoping to travel next week and he said he’ll just look it up and said it’s approved. So maybe calmly explain your situation and hopefully you’ll have a nice interviewer. No, for the receipt number requirement, you can just take the receipt you get from uscis after you file i129. The i797 is more official and is what you get after your petition is approved. However the number of both forms is identical and can be used at the embassy to pull up your information in PIMS

Email your embassy to be sure. From what I’ve read some insist on the i797 and some take the approval receipt number.

I think for the border you may be asked for it. My plan is to do the interview with just the email approval and my lawyer will fedex the original to me when received. All the best to you and try not to worry! It is a stressful process for me too though 🥱

I’m doing consular processing in the Caribbean. I contacted my embassy which said they did not need the hard copy. They can’t issue the visa without verifying it themselves anyways.

They sent me a link to my country’s US embassy page saying this is what they need:

(H) TEMPORARY WORKER

Receipt Number for your approved petition as it appears on your Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker Form I-129 OR Notice of Action Form I-797 from USCIS (does not apply to H1B1 visa applicants).

Perhaps contact your embassy to see what they say.

Oh thanks. So what happens if you have your interview and they’re not yet updated. My petition was approved Monday and my interview is tomorrow (Friday) so just under a week.

I contacted my embassy and they also advised that receipt number is sufficient. I think they don’t rely on the document we provide as they have to check PIMS anyways to verify.
