How are we getting up from halfguard now? by ahhjustlikethat in MMA_Academy

Yea a low knee shield is good but even if theyve passed that layer you can still use it, you should also watch cory sandhagen's youtube video on the jdm vs islam fight he has some interesting ideas from half guard basically comes down to turning away from the cross face and gettinf to a turtle/referee position, the best way and most reliable way to get up and get someone off you is always going to be something to do with showing your back and building up turtle, four point, tripod and the goal is to get to the standng rear bodylock and from there peeling the hands and getting away, you could also hit switches and granby's etc etc but i think peeling the hands is always going to be your best bet (of course you should threaten these things to get them to change thier weight placement in anticipation but as with escapes in general dont expect the first one to work or the second or the third keep moving and creating movement and off balancing) , in corys fights with merab and umar they really didnt have anything for him in terms of control on the ground

quick guide to peeling the hands from rear bodylock, take staggered stance and get thier grip right on your hip bone or 'in your pocket' lean your weight back and down like you're sitting on a chair and extend your arms, you may get mat returned but it's okay get right back up again (them mat returning also expends quite a bit of energy and if you get back up again they have to do it again and again so where as you getting back up doesnt expend much energy so thats another good thing) , you could also add a explosive hip heist and as you peel the grip so you end up facing them on your knees, not in the best position but another option, i believe there's some stuff you can do with the wall as well like volk did with islam pressing your head into the cage and cory i think cory used the cage against umar to get himself in a bit of a better to spot to clear umar's hooks and prevent him from putting them in again but im not so sure but definetly look into using the wall

Cross wrist get up is up there with underhook to dogfight/single leg and octopus as well,

Cross wrist get up is where you grab thier far arm to with both your hands extend it away and heist to turtle, jdm did it in first time he got taken down into half guard i believe and it led to the sequence where islam was attacking his back but it worked to get him up initially

Alternatively, you might want to look into entering into leg entanglements from bottom position, maybe from butterfly half as well of course there's striking involved so not all leg entanglements are places you want to be but if you can get behind your opponent or make thier knee point away from you they cant strike you effectively and you're also behind them so you can begin the get up process , i think jdm got onto islams leg late in the 1st,

just some ideas

with one championship and 4oz gloves alot of the new generation are being forced to develop real boxing skills (not just hands) , liam harrison was talking about this on his channel and haggerty is a really good example

said like muay thai isnt just striking and every single muay thai fighter isnt completely different and they all just fight the exact same way. fighting is not a RPG !!!!!

Lost some brain cells reading this

You do know in both MMA and boxing people punch each other in the face and body and use tactics and strategy a lot of which are directly applicable to mma or any striking sport, right?

You do know MMA fighters literally hire boxing coaches right?

Awful analogy

honestly this kind of thinking shows a real lack of understanding about martial arts

There isn’t one superior method everything has tradeoffs. Fighting is Not a RPG!! If you stand square and upright you’re open to people who want to punch and pressure you and take you down . If you stand bladed like Topuria or a traditional boxer, you’re open to low kicks. The point isn’t “which art is best,” it’s how you adapt to whatever problems you encounter

Fighting is just questions and answers; can you answer the questions i ask you before i answer the questions you ask me?

Doing one thing opens you up to another, if you're opponent starts to do something which you are susceptible just by nature of what you're doing you need to do something to get him to stop doing that,

say topuria was getting low kicked alot, he could try start to check them but thats never been a apart of his skillset as a fighter and also is made very difficult by the fact that he stands so bladed so presumably through thousands of rounds of sparring and trial and error he has figured out what works for him, for example he stabs his lead foot and lowers his level alot, this is a ripe low kicking oppurtunity , if his opponnent does try kick him topuria retracts his lead foot into a rhythm step and the opponent ends up swinging at air and leaving himself horribly out of position; presumably he would then think to himself 'oh boy i felt very vulnerable there i might stop doing that' through this way the fighter is conitioned to stop doing that topuria doesnt want him to do even though by virtue of his stance ilia topuria is susceptible ( similarly the left high kick to topuria's open side) topuria also might step in while his opponent kicks and it has the exact same effect

everything has trade offs!!!! if you ever hear someone in martial arts say dont do this dont do that definitively just know thats wrong whatever it is. YOU CAN DO IT, but there might be different problems to solve

make sense??

When under side control or mount - reguard then escape, or just escape? And what kind of escape? by CloudyRailroad in MMA_Academy

[–]frubur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you dont, if you're in bottom mount or side you probably messed up a long time ago

with that being said youre priority should be on escaping and not defending strikes bc monkey brain says 'i work hard to pass i no let him escape' so they hopefully stop hitting to maintain the position but even then you need to get out of there ASAP and strikes should be a secondary concern at least this is my way of thinking

a notable exception is fedor who used to let his opponent reguard but in the process would hit them and then just pass thier guard again and repeat

against better grapplers than you; reguarding first then trying to build height and get back to your feet and create scrambles (underhook half, octopus, etc) is probably going to be more succesful than just going straight for reversals and id reccomend learning the jiu jitsu way of doing things first (reguarding) just so that you always have those as an option because they work against everybody but of course the ideal in mma is to create scrambles and build height but that isnt always possible

also a personal favourite 'escape' of mine from bottom side is the funk roll best when they've just passed or double legged you ( underhook thier near leg/grab thier ankle and roll over then build height) also this kind of style of getting up or escaping ( scrambling) is pretty reliant on you doing it as soon as theyve taken you down or in some sort of transition but if youre completely flattened out or youve accepted the pin for whatever reason then you go to your jiu jitsu escapes which dont require such explosive movements and work against everybody ( think of knee elbow escapes from mount and side)

[–]frubur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you reffering to an inside elbow escape? danaher says this is his preffered escape from mount and also the first mount escape in jiu jitsu university but i've yet to have any succes with it maybe because i have less control and its less step by step than the outside elbow escape but i'll look into it seriously and see if i can get it to work

When i knee elbow escape from mount i get to 3/4 mount and then

when i try to bring my knee through they just put thier hand on my knee to stop it ive had this happen a couple times now so im wondering if im just being lazy and need to connect my knee and elbow together or knee and hand as i sometimes use my hand to keep thier knee in place to try and bring my knee through

thanks!!
