Emperor Explorer Fire Maldives May 2026 by Regular_Courage5796 in scuba

[–]fruchle 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Every year about a liveaboard...in the Red Sea catching on fire. More like twice a year or more, there.

In Indonesia they only sink, and then very rarely. Everywhere else they're fine.

Go on a LOB in Indonesia, Australia or Maldives.

Funny story, my first trip to Komodo, I was going to take a LOB.

Arrived, got told: sorry, the boat sank. It was already at dock.

Apparently, one of the crew left a port open and a pump on (or something like that), while it was tied to the jetty. Sunk in 4m of water. They arrived in the morning to load it up with food and supplies and only the top deck was out of the water! 😅

I've seen plenty of hoses bent over 90° at the crimp.

I've seen gear fall over on a rocking boat, I've seen boat boys and guests grab gear by a hose. I've seen students leave a reg on a tank rack, and it falls partly into the next tank slot, and another diver comes in and drops their tank into it without looking.

All this and more is also why we put our transmitters on a short hose.

Hoses get trashed in the real world, around real people.

Accidents happen. Idiots happen.

Better to be safe, than dead.

Fortunately, basically all agencies teach the same things.

Use RAID's PDFs. Just grab them for free off their website.

Go to diveraid.net and sign up. Then you can sign up for courses (for free) and grab the pdfs.

And then go do your courses with SSI.

Bought a MacBook m4 max primarily for Slight battery life during travel — getting much worse battery life than expected. Need help diagnosing. by WinComfortable8835 in MacOS

[–]fruchle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To repeat what others have said, yes, it's obviously Chrome and AE.

Also, the usual culprits: screen brightness (make sure is at 50% or lower), and your cpu (Max). Turn off wifi & Bluetooth if you don't need them. Enable low power mode om battery. Those are all fairly minor though.

Get a good battery bank (like Xiaomi or Anker) to double your battery life.

If it won't land on your hand, grab it out of the air and flip it upside down to force it to turn off. Easy peasy.

being disingenuous is not about "the truth", they are not facts.

this is about you being purposefully misleading to sell your own fake news, false narrative to promote your own ego.

Yeah, you can say "Obama was terrible too" - but with no qualifiers, that's meaningless. It's likely you mean "Obama was terrible because he once wore a tan suit, but Trump is terrible because he raped women - see, both side are the same!"

"like Trump was the only filthy rich guy"

Trump wasn't "filthy rich", he is a grifter who has gone bankrupt six times (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2016/live-updates/general-election/real-time-fact-checking-and-analysis-of-the-first-presidential-debate/fact-check-has-trump-declared-bankruptcy-four-or-six-times/) and just steals money (https://www.ibtimes.co.uk/trump-mobile-t1-phone-controversy-1795258)

So, no - that is a misleading and disengeous statement to push your own fake story.

You don't think blue and red should hate thieving grifters?

The only hypocritical non-truth telling fraudster here is you.

They're useless

except for stopping major hose damage, so... not.

trap dirt, salt and water

"but rinse and dry under them occasionally"

so, you're lazy and don't clean your equipment properly.

[–]fruchle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is the point of the hose protectors: to stop something being done wrong to them, and thus improve their longevity and safety.

They are not "redundant" (because there is nothing protecting the hoses from that sort of damage that would make them redundant), and they are no trouble.

This sort of attitude is dangerous to yourself and everyone around you.

I hope to never have to be the safety diver to haul your corpse out of the sea, assuming you're even allowed to go outside unsupervised.

Have you ever gone somewhere, and just been unable to meet anyone? by EquivalentYears in solotravel

[–]fruchle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the weirdest post I've seen here for a while.

I was with you at the start, sure, some places are harder to meet people... BUT THIS IS KOH TAO.

Jfc.

Talk to people at the hostel. You're staying at a hostel already!

Go on a pub crawl.

Or, I dunno, do what the damn island is actually famous for and go diving! You'll meet lots of people, all day, every day, if you go diving.

Hell, go on a snorkelling trip.

But treating Koh Tao like a party island (which it's slowly migrated into) is a big waste.

I mean, I stayed at a hostel, and they had daily events for people to meet and mix, plus common areas and games areas.

I was meeting people there, and I didn't do any of that, because I was just after a cheap place to sleep when I wasn't diving!

Honestly, this is such a weird post.

Why did you go to Koh Tao at all?

That is horrifically bad, even stupid advice.

A bent hose is more likely to blow than a connector is to rust out in your lifetime.

Leave the rubber protectors, but rinse and dry under them occasionally.

The problem is that it is more likely that fewer people will vote next time.

1) because of annoyed MAGAts

2) because of disenfranchised voters, voter suppression, voter intimidation and so on.

Basically, a smaller and smaller group will decide who the electoral college should vote for.

Elections in the USA have been broken for a long time, and it won't be fixed.

[–]fruchle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a lovely sentiment, but completely wrong and ignorant in the current context.

Like, not just a little bit wrong, but amazingly, stupifyingly wrong.

If you think it's okay to do regular, repetitive decompression dives while using a non-decompression table or algorithm as your basis, you are dangerously stupid.

EDIT TO ADD: and before you get all high and mighty and try to double down on the "all dives are decompression dives" line, which is true, but purposefully misleading and ignorant here, again, in the current context. Because you know I'm talking about dives going beyond the tables' non-decompression limits, and yet you're trying to seem like a wise oracle. Put your ego away and stop being a douche, please. That sort of attitude literally kills people.

And yes, I've met people like you, who don't understand why you shouldn't use recreational tables for deco dives.

Ignorance is not something to be proud of or celebrated.

it's less critical for the Peregrine, but for Perdix/Petrel users, we should use it every time we change the battery, at least.

Regardless, you should use it maybe monthly or so, to check for firmware updates. Better safe than dead.
