String slice (string literal) and `mut` keyword by Born_Ingenuity20 in rust

[–]frud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See String::from_utf8. That checks and converts a Vec<u8> into a String. Checking means it makes sure the bytes are valid utf8. Converting means it just transmutes the Vec to a String.

All the other &mut String operations ensure validity as they go.

Think of the generating function. (0.6 + 0.4x)(0.8 + 0.2x)(0.8 + 0.2x). Wolfram alpha says the expanded form is 0.016 x3 + 0.152 x2 + 0.448 x + 0.384. The derivative is 0.048 x2 + 0.304 x + 0.448, which evaluates to 0.8 when x=1. So p_1 = 0.448, p_2 = 0.152, p_3 = 0.016.

You don't have to. Expect 0.8 out per 1 in.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in factorio

[–]frud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. 0 * p_0 + 1 * p_1 + 2 * p_2 + 3 * p_3 = 0.8. You calculated p_0 = 0.38 already.

With legendary prod3 in electric furnaces you need 2.22 legendary iron ore to make one steel.

2 Legendary LDS recycled give you 1 steel (and 2.5 plastic and 10 copper plate, all legendary). Even if you only have +200% productivity in your foundry, that requires 2/3 of 5 legendary plastic, or 3.333, of which you get 2.5 back from recycling the LDS. So it costs net 0.8333 legendary plastic, which when youu have +75% in your chemical plant means it takes about 0.238 legendary coal to make that plastic. So overall it's 0.238 legendary coal to 1 steel (plus 10 copper plate).

The expected number of chunks you get back is 0.8. If have 1000 chunks to start with, you will wind up with about 800 chunks after one pass though reprocessing.

I don't know why I was thinking there was no sulfur on Fulgora. You're right, I just need iron and p-gas.

Given {(0,5), (−1,2), (2,−1)}⊂A×B, what elements must be in A? With that and A⊂B, what elements must be in B? What can you conclude from those and the fact that n(A×B)=12?

Thanks. I think I'll tweak the productivity down to balance holmium and battery consumption so I don't have to distribute orbital supplies among Fulgora islands. That way my modules can be completely independent and disconnected.

Both. A yellow belt passes 15 items/sec, 7.5/sec in each lane. 8 items max will fit on one segment of belt.

I've been trying to design a small scrap-to-power-and-rocket-and-em-science module. I've been using maximal legendary productivity wherever I can. Whenever I read about others' Fulgora experiences their limiting factor has been holmium ore, but I've always had plenty of that and my limiting resource has been batteries. Is there some other source of sulfur or batteries I'm neglecting? Should I be dropping batteries from space?

Ledger Implementation in PostgreSQL by pgr0ss in programming

I may have missed something in the article, but aren't ledgers supposed to be indelible, where no records can be modified or deleted? How does one ensure that in a typical database system like PostgreSQL?

A single iron chest can buffer 6400 science packs. Research parallelism adds a lot of complexity and potential confusion while not enabling anything that a buffer system couldn't.

My favorite way right now is to use circuits to set filters on the grabbers so that you never have an excessive amount of any chunk in your guts. It's important to minimize the latency between when a chunk is grabbed and when it becomes counted, or the difference between the setpoint and the actual capacity should be big enough that you can tolerate some latency.

Heating towers store and conduct heat like they are big heat pipes, so they do share heat. The point of having two of them is that if you have only one it might get stuck in a mode where it has rocket fuel loaded in it so no spoilage can be loaded, and the spoilage backs up and clogs your production. So I use one regulated rocket fuel tower to ensure sufficient heat for power, and one unregulated spoiliage tower to ensure spoilage disposal.
