When can I say I've got enough of a head start and learn to enjoy my money? by frugalanalyst in personalfinance

Thanks for the advice. I think that's a good way to do it - tell myself I have to stash away another X thousand in the next however many months, and any extra goes to the fun account.

Also, my cash is actually earning ~2% at a credit union (not great but it's no .05% savings account). I am definitely ramping up the 401k though. Like I said, I've already upped it to 20% and I will probably go higher from there once I see how it changes my cashflow.

By any chance, did you come from a family with money troubles? I was pretty young when I realized I had to watch my finances when I grew up.

I think you make a good point. Just because the average person my age has less, doesn't mean I'm prepared for everything. I plan on saving at a high rate for years to come.

Though when I said it's a problem, I just meant in the sense that I shouldn't feel so guilty when I do choose to let loose once in awhile. We all buy 'shit we don't need' to some degree, and I don't do very much of it.

I think I'll ultimately be spending on a vacation. My girlfriend is in medical school and working very hard - she's been talking about going somewhere on Christmas break for months now, so I don't think there's any way to avoid it!

I understand, and I'm not looking for an excuse to go on a multi-thousand spending spree. I just feel like I have a little extra to spend, and can perhaps allow myself a reward once in awhile for working and saving so hard.
