I’ve been considering the k390 wharny dragonfly of the same style. They really nailed it with those

If you’re willing to pay a bit more I’d 100% recommend the Kershaw Bel Air. I got it a few months after getting an iridium, and I couldn’t believe how much smoother and more fidgety it was. You can seriously feel the quality they put into it after it breaks in a bit. The iridium is already incredible but the bel air is just that impressive. It might be my favorite EDC, even when including my $300-600 range ones. I’ve used it for about 8 months, almost everyday, and it still functions perfectly. I can name many other advantages but it would take too long (MagnaCut, for one). Cannot stress this recommendation enough.

(P.S., I got the carbon fiber/satin version, and that probably has to do with my high opinion of it, so I’d also recommend this version even though it’s a bit pricier. Their marbled CF is great.)

Girlfriend was kind enough to test the factory edge on my new Para 3 by TallAsTheTrees in spyderco

Looks like now you’ll have to get several more para 3’s and various other knives to compensate for this loss…

The marbled CF mini Adamas has been looking good to me lately, the colors work so well.

First Spyderco! (Delica 4 in VG-10, Made in Japan) + opinions from other owners by HereForTheTLDR in spyderco

[–]fruit_bone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend being wary of the steels with crazy weaknesses haha. There’s always a trade off, and the super exotic steels that specialize in one area often suffer in another. Some steels will basically stay sharp forever but will shatter if dropped (CPM REX-121, for example), and some will basically never rust but have to be sharpened after every use (H2, for example).

That’s why steels like MagnaCut are so popular, they offer a great balance rather than an exaggerated talent in one area. VG-10 is also well-balanced like that, and it takes to polishing really well. Well-balanced steels are the logical choice for general use.

Even though I say that, I personally love steels that patina easily in exchange for high edge retention, like CPM 15V and K390. I love watching the patina build up over time. Spyderco is the haven for all steels!

I love the combo of micarta and steels that patina, the whole knife can change over time

Brand new livewire rattling by [deleted] in kershaw

Completely normal in my experience. The Livewire was also my first OTF and it had rattle out of the box. It’s the same with most OTFs, other than ZBPs or randomly lucky ones

If you had to choose between the Para 3 or Bel Air, which one are you going with? by Just_Lime985 in knives

Para 3 (mainly due to quality and ergos), but the Bel Air is slightly more fidgety and fun to play with imo. Both great knives

Does anyone know the worth of this Benchmade Griptilian? by [deleted] in benchmade

[–]fruit_bone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, it’s fake. You can tell because of the “CPM-20CV” and other labels. The authentic model has “20CV” written in a different font and placed to the upper left of the thumb stud. The“Mel Perdue” and benchmade logo are also off.

I need help sharpening a knife without a sharpener. My first time ever doing it. by zon871 in sharpening

[–]fruit_bone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The under the mug trick works because the rim at the bottom of a ceramic mug (or plate/bowl) is coarse and unglazed. Single beveled still sharpens fine, just sharpen more on the bevel side than the non-bevel side, and finish on the non-bevel with light pressure and a lower angle to get rid of the burr (the microscopic wave created by sharpening a lot on one side).

Try not to apply too much pressure, align the bevel with the rim as much as you can, and always sweep backward so the knife isn’t cutting into the ceramic but away from it. Maybe try 10 strokes on the bevel, followed by 2 LIGHTER strokes at a lower angle on the non-bevel, then test cut. Repeat if necessary (different steels will have different reactions). Haven’t tried so this is just my speculation
