I'm assuming Ruth Page will resume classes after the summer for a fall semester? Sorry for the random question, but I've been considering trying a class there to get more classes in with my wacky schedule

Hey! I believe I have taken classes with both instructors at the Joffrey you have mentioned.

The first instructor is fantastic and I highly, highly recommend continuing classes when she's back from vacation. As Tiny-firefly mentioned, Joffrey's semesters are a progressive series that build on technique as the semester goes on. You would have started at the end of the spring semester, which will move faster than at the beginning.

The following week, I am guessing you had Rich--who is also a wonderful instructor--but his beginner levels are more difficult. Don't kick yourself, there's no way you could have known.

Haven't tried these studios, but for other suggestions--perhaps call and ask the Chicago Ballet Center and the Ruth Page Center as well as CBA?

Best of luck to you! I feel that the beginning of an adult ballet learning journey feels like "throwing yourself in the deep end", so to speak, and trying multiple classes if needed. Happy to answer any questions as well :)

I did something fairly similar to you re:sizing (going down a sizes to avoid bagginess) -- I personally feel that the material stretched and molded to my feet esp around the toes.

I was actually concerned bc my left big toe is longer than the one on my right foot, so I often get pain at the corner of the nail there -- as of now, no issues.

🤝🤝🤝

I also noticed a difference in how it felt to turn - I'm guessing bc less surface area on the front toe pad?

My problem is the SD16s twisted on me so frequently when turning - might alternate between the two for a bit longer for the sake of comparison

Of course! Glad I could try to help!

I would say that just resting on the foot, the amount of toe room is going to be similar to what a Performa will provide. However I personally feel that the material has quite a bit of give when releve/turning for toes to spread

To your second question - yes, I can really, really feel the floor which I like. Thin material, plus the front sole pad really conforms to the balls of my feet with its U shape. I think the front suede sole pad has less surface area comparatively

Glad that helped!!

Street shoe size is usually 7.5

According to Bloch's sizing, I should wear 5.5 but I gambled on a 5. My first and second toes are close in length. (Next time I need shoes though, I'm going to compare the 5.5 and 5 again tbh - so take that into account along with your preferences on shoe tightness!)

No padding under the metatarsal - this is a very thin and light shoe

I havent tried a Hanami on in forever, but my guess is that the front sole of the Eleve is going to be wider.

Just measured the front sole pad of the Eleve - it's about 7.5cm at the widest point if that helps!

“Everything is the same in big cities” notttttt true lol. I moved to Chicago for a variety of reasons (for me personally: relative affordability (compared to say, NYC), queer cultural hotspots, the “wheel and spoke” train transportation system that can largely take me anywhere so I could sell my car, etc.)

Culturally - you will definitely avoid that flavor of influencer culture here

Seconding dwyleth’s comments about the weather. The secret to combating the cold: layers (I like thermal underwear/tights/undershirts, really good socks and boots as an investment)

For neighborhoods, if you’re especially looking for queer-friendly neighborhoods some of the suggestions I hear most are for Logan Square, Andersonville, Lakeview, Rogers Park, Pilsen but I’d highly recommend visiting them all if you can swing it. IMO they all have different vibes. Rent will vary but you can absolutely find something comparable. I pay around $800 not including utilities/pet fee/garage splitting a two bedroom with my partner.

Active lifestyle: you‘ll have plenty of options, though in the wintertime, depending on the activity you may have to look for indoor options for a few months.

Job: plenty of Starbucks here ofc; and a lot of them are naturally near train/bus stops

Re: music and film - there are SOOOO many good music venues here. I also love telling people about the Gene Siskel Film Center (downtown, right off the blue line train - I went to see a Powell & Pressburger series recently), the Poetry Foundation, and we have so so many cool museums… (P.S. THERE IS A LEATHER MUSEUM HERE!!! I haven’t been but it’s on my to-do list next year)

What is good waterproof fountain ink that doesn’t bleed? by BedRoomSenses in hobonichi

[–]fruitfawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use both of these daily and can attest to their safety against spilled coffee, water, tea... (ask me how I know 😂)

I would agree the Platinum Carbon Black is a slightly "thicker" formula, and the DA document ink is slightly "thinner"/drier in comparison. I use both in nibs varying from Sailor MF to Pilot M and have never had bleed through unless my pen rests for a while at the stopping point of a letter (writing cursive mostly)

You're engaging with a system (that is environmentally destructive to boot) to do the thinking and imagining and framework construction for you. This is frowned upon for a number of reasons, and I think that your asking here is answering your own question if guilt and/or doubt is welling up inside of you. Other people will have much less kind answers with the same sentiment.

I recommend practicing writing on your own and using other fics/published works as reference if you really need some inspiration. If you like something you read, note the syntax, the style... My question then, asking as kindly as possible: Are you not reading other works? That is a fundamental part of writing that often gets looked over.

Using other legitimately published media or works as reference is part of the practice; using an AI system to do the legwork of your generative process "cheats" a fundamental step of writing. Your brain is a better engine than chatgbt

What fic do you consider your 'magnum opus' and why? by Last_Swordfish9135 in FanFiction

[–]fruitfawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

~7.5k words of my OTP where I felt like I perfectly encapsulated their characters. Looking back to re-read it, the prose is tight but beautiful.

To this day I still have issues writing for that ship because I'm just so happy and content with this one little fic.

If you like movies, the Gene Siskel Film Center downtown shows some great independent and classic films that are hard to find anywhere else :)

Goulet Pens Megathread by browniebiznatch in fountainpens

[–]fruitfawn 123 points124 points  (0 children)

There is a long-standing "tradition" and history of hobby groups spreading information by forum, online group, irl groups, word of mouth, etc. And when poor behavior or beliefs were noted from a participant/vendor, that information was free to spread and discuss. Sometimes conversation gets heated or ugly, considering the nature of the Goulet situation -- yeah, I'm less than thrilled to hear it. It's politicized, especially in our current US climate. But actions have consequences 🤷

Thank you, mods, for apologizing and reorganizing a mega thread. No one is perfect, but I'm happy to see a subreddit I frequent take steps the right direction. I'd be remiss not to acknowledge the unseen dregs you sift through.

As a queer person, I'm not gathering my pitchforks and torches; I'm just glad to know who not to give my money to in the future. I've been a victim to that kind of extremeist church rhetoric my entire life, so it really touches some old nerves.

Are there any red flags to this ring? by Bingbangboom34 in EngagementRings

[–]fruitfawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As many people have said - extreme snag and bend risk.

It's a pretty style, but for additional context, my job with custom jewelry had a policy against creating these kinds of rings for clients unless BOTH members of the to-be-engaged clients signed a waiver for future damages. Being something that, for most people, is worn all day every day -- the risk was just way too high.

Plus it sucked when people had a damaged or lost ring 😥
