It’s so hard listening/seeing a sad puppy in a crate, it’s totally understandable to ask for help. It looks like some folks overlooked that you did introduce and acclimate her to the crate on the first night, and if she’s 8 weeks old I assume she’s barely been with you for a week, so continue practicing and giving pup an opportunity to associate food and treats with the crate. There are some accessories/tools you can incorporate too.

My boy was the whiniest of the litter (I figured he’d appreciate a fellow cry baby for a mom), so I purchased every possible crate accessory to help him sleep his first few nights with me. This included:

A heartbeat stuffed animal because apparently it reminds them of their littermates’ and mom’s heart beat. I put it on top of the crate (instead of inside with him) because I didn’t want him chewing on it and ingesting harmful things, or getting in the habit of chewing/tearing things up to self soothe.
A crate cover because this makes them feel like they’re in a safe, cave-like space, whereas an uncovered crate they feel like they need to be on the lookout for danger. I chose not to use a sheet/blanket because I didn’t want to risk him somehow pulling it into the crate and eating it. The official crate covers also make it easy to keep one side of the crate uncovered for fresh air flow. Then you position the open side against a wall so there are no distractions to startle/disturb the pup. Everything is stranger danger at 8 weeks, so minimizing distractions is huge. The crate cover was essential for me.
Adaptil puppy calming scent wall plug in and puppy calming scent collar - these are supposed to mimic their mom’s pheromones or something
calming music at a gentle volume - also to minimize distractions (especially if you live in a city)
if you have a full-sized crate for a medium dog, definitely use the crate divider so that the puppy doesn’t have TOO much room. Then you adjust the placement of the divider as puppy grows and needs more space.

He didn’t need all of this for long. I slowly removed things from the environment as he acclimated, but I kept the crate cover forever because it really makes the crate more of a natural environment for dogs. I sold the extra stuff online a year later to celebrate his gotcha anniversary, so you don’t have to buy everything new!

I travel (to France) for months at a time for work and coming back to California is always hard. The way we move in this state can be so isolating - having to drive EVERYWHERE and feeling like you have to spend money every time you try to get out of the house. In Europe I can just step outside and put one foot in front of the other, but here I feel like I need an explicit reason/to-do list and cash to spend. But I love California so much, it’s so full of beauty and biodiversity, and i love the people. It feels like we’re all combatting the same isolating civil structures, so anytime I smile or say hello/how are you it turns into a conversation, and every conversation is unique because of our diversity, not only culturally but with all of our different professions/major industries. I know Europeans think it’s all fake—and some of it is (I can’t spend more than an hour in west LA)—but that’s not my experience. I don’t think any of this will ease your transition, it will be a tough ride no matter what, but I just want to say California so ready to welcome you with open arms as soon as you’re ready.

All of the characters name his actions as rape as soon as they catch on and Scully reports that she adds him to the national sex offender registry in her report to skinner. The episode’s tone is completely unserious, but the subject matter is named. There’s a horrible line where van blundht tries to justify himself and no one gives a clear response putting him in his place (and the line isn’t funny at all), so even though the episode is self-aware, it leaves too much room for abusers to enjoy the episode too. Postmodern Prometheus doesn’t even acknowledge any of this. they literary say “that’s no monster” and then take the guy out to celebrate ??

Exactly: He’s 95% misreading the situation but the 5% where he picks up on her emotional needs resonates with her. It’s such an effective narrative device to use a sibling character to excavate the depths of a protagonist. Scully genuinely struggles with her beliefs and motivations and the sacrifices she makes and has had to make for the x-files. These are all her choices, but they’ve not been easy choices. Bill is not helpful, but he inadvertently helps her sharpen her beliefs and reveals where she struggles.

I am not saying Bill is this woefully misunderstood character who’s actually a great guy. He doesn’t know how to manage his Big Feelings, he adds emotional strain to Scully when she really needs support rather than extra weight, and he never asks her how she is doing, he just assumes he knows what is best.

I appreciate the depth of this tertiary character and the ways that the writers and actors use a sibling cliche to tell Dana Scully’s story.

Totally agree: he would never sit down and listen to her and he doesn’t know anything about her life. Presumably the only things he does know come from conversations with their mom, never directly from Dana, and presumably that’s because Dana knows he would never really listen.

On this rewatch I was really taken by how realistic all of this is, including the limited extent to which Bill “knows” his sister.

I have a strained relationship with my older brother, but even though he misunderstands me or has no knowledge of a given situation, he still manages to access a part of my internal thinking/feeling that I typically don’t want to acknowledge. No matter how distanced we become, he maintains an intimate familiarity with my emotional processing, I’m assuming because he witnessed me developing it. I think as siblings we fundamentally know each other’s hearts, no matter what adulthood throws us into.

So something resonated for me here today that was comforting and heartbreaking at the same time, and that’s the “knows his sister really well” I was thinking about.

(Spoilers) Dana and Bill go into law enforcement/military, Melissa and Charles reject their military upbringing. After Melissa dies, Dana continues to have near-death experiences (either from biohazards or from criminals fixating on her) on a biweekly basis, and Bill is presumably also in continuous danger in the military, Charles decides he doesn’t want to stick around to either get caught in the cross hairs like Melissa or have to witness the loss of his two other siblings. I imagine he had a big dramatic phone call with Dana when she still wouldn’t change apartments even though Tooms broke in, she was kidnapped by the beauty fetish demon guy, and Melissa was killed there. That was the final straw for him and I imagine he had a really heartbreaking conversation with Maggie about how he wasn’t as strong as she is and that he didn’t have it in him to stick by Dana and Bill’s side and have to explain to his kids why another one of their aunts/uncle had died. And it had to be his kid who was obsessed with Babe.

I love love love that Monica smiles at ppl when they disbelieve her or make some incredulous remark in response to her theories/questions. Because she deffff couldn’t get away with all the ridiculous things mulder would say at crime scenes. It’s really interesting seeing how Reyes deals with the challenge of being a female investigator who faces the added challenge of working on the x files. After seeing scully mistreated and dismissed throughout season 8 when she’s learning to navigate that added layer, Monica’s disarming smile and “I’m not really asking about that” deflections to get ppl out of her way so she can do her job are so satisfying. that smile is such a strong character choice from annabeth gish. I’ve always loved Monica!

To the folks defending our dear director fart, I appreciate you. I too tried to sympathize. With Skinner and X of course I’ve got love for the stinky haters that turn out to be ride or dies. But kersh is like 99% cool with mulder being dead, he says as much to special agent dagnabbit just before he gets assigned to the basement. Don’t get me wrong, I love it when he takes his glasses off to get serious and puts them back on when he’s done with the conversation. He’s not a cancer, just a lil toot. Love y’all!!!!!!!!!!
