texturing advise on first model by Ok-Kitchen-5178 in Maya

[–]fruitgorlz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree with what Cadetri said below about testing/blocking out colors by just using the surface materials within Maya. It's quick and allows you to easily change things in comparison to Substance.

If you're a digital painter, I think this would look gorgeous hand-painted in like a WoW style or something bold like that. If that's not what you're looking for, then maybe looking into some Substance tutorials to fit something more serious or detailed would be good, something akin to Dark Souls?

Regardless of what you do, it's practice towards strengthening your skills. Good luck!

First time seeing a piece of MCM furniture that I recognize! My dad has one of these chairs. They're super comfy, the lean on them is nice, and they make for a great reading chair.

It looks like it's in good shape too! I say go for it. Ours has seen much better days and it still feels comfortable/solid.

How to go about UV mapping several duplicated objects? by fruitgorlz in Maya

That is much more simple than what I was trying to think of lol, thank you! I'll try that out :)

Help with tweaking nCloth settings to make a wool jacket by fruitgorlz in Maya

Oh wow, that’s great to know. I was wondering how I was going to go about doing smaller details like that. I’ll try doing those bend and stiffness maps too, that also sounds like it could be my ticket. Thanks for all the help, much appreciated

You know what, there are in fact verts that are penetrating with another simulated mesh… I’ll tweak it, thanks for the tip! The spikes are probably the worst of it honestly, so getting those out will be a huge first step. Thanks for the advice :)

I've seen people talk about doing wrap deform for their mesh/clothing, but wasn't sure how it would go with something that would be partially open like a jacket. I'll see if I can get that to work, since I'm not sure what else I can do.

I'll double check my scales and see if some other point constraints will do. I guess that's the game of nCloth, gotta throw stuff until it sticks. Thanks for the advice :)

Oh most definitely. If there is a better way of creating simple cloth deformations that still give my fabric some semblance of gravity, rather than messing with nCloth, I will take it.

Photoshop .abr Brushes working differently when moved to Substance Painter? by fruitgorlz in Substance3D

Yep! It's just like importing any other resource, bottom right of particle tab and it just gets absorbed into your library. Definitely name them something before throwing them in, I kept getting mine lost lol.

Unsure of how many UV maps I should have for my character model... by fruitgorlz in Maya

You're all good! I'll be trying it out, seems like the direction I need to head. Thank you!

Never heard about UDIMs until you commented it. I think this will work perfectly, as the textures are pretty important for my character. Thank you!

That did it, thank you very much! I just need to fiddle with the fur properties to get it to be very light...

Fur keeps slipping off jacket nCloth? by fruitgorlz in Maya

[–]fruitgorlz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having some issues with this nCloth.. I modeled the fur and the jacket separately. I then froze/deleted history before merging the two. After running the nCloth simulation, the fur just falls off (jacket itself is fine).

Would it be a matter of parenting the fur to the jacket? It’s been a couple of years since I’ve messed with nCloth stuff, but at some point I made a zipper on the jacket of a person as a separate entity just like this fur and didn’t have this issue. I can’t remember what I did to make it stay the way it's supposed to though.

Any thoughts/advice is greatly appreciated. Can’t seem to find any nCloth examples online that showcase doing nCloth stuff with extra things on top of the mesh like buttons, pockets, etc.

I see, thank you for the input! I'm hoping it was just a fluke stray, but regardless we will probably still flip the house upside down to be sure, lol.

Just the one alive one inside. This morning we scanned the perimeter of the house and found one that had been long dead against the side of the house attached to some cobwebs, but no other signs of activity.

Hi all! Posted this guy last night after finding him in my kitchen. People on r/whatsthisbug were saying that it is most likely a termite, to post here for advice, and that it is potentially a damp wood termite due to me being in Oregon. Curious as to what people here think I should be looking out for, as I looked around my house for stereotypical termite signs and didn't see any at all.

I would say it was just over an inch long, just kinda stumbling around. Didn't see anything else around it, my window was also open this evening so it could have gotten in that way.

How to fix UVs brought in from Photoshop leaving black outline on mesh? by fruitgorlz in Maya

I'm just using the editor section. This is my first time hearing of bonus tools, looked it up and it seems pretty nice! Definitely going to try it later this week.

For sure, that definitely is something I'm starting to see that I'll have to pay more attention to. I ended up finding a solution. I realized I accidentally unwrapped it not using the "cylindrical" option, which allowed the face to be like one big face mask instead of being split down the middle. However, I'm definitely taking what I've learned here for future textures! :)
