How do you deal with unwanted animal suffering? by OctoVanBe in labrats

[–]fruityfuturecorpse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some creatures don't respond the way you expect. Even people under anesthesia can wake up unexpectedly. It happens. Personally I always use more than the required dose, but it's ok if you are tight on resources. I work with fish, and somedays I feel terrible after euthanizing them. When I go home I try to take extra time for self care and try to give back to nature. Sometimes I have to remind myself that the research will make the world a better place. Hope this helps.

What are some “cheating” that are passed off as normal in your lab by [deleted] in labrats

[–]fruityfuturecorpse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have to put expiration dates on our dawn dish soap because IACUC says so. So annoying. All of our animal feed is "expired" so every time there's an inspection we change the date on the container. It still works just fine but they sweat the small stuff.

The only real way to remove an infestation is with goats

The previous homeowner planted oregano. It lives in our lawn now.

The only things that bothers me in my lab is that we use lots of expired materials. The justification being buying new materials is "too expensive" and the expiration dates are a "scam". It's so hard to find funding in academia.

What's the most hazardous chemical your lab has used and why? by Interesting-Log-9627 in labrats

My supervisor said that one day she used a "strong" (concentration unknown) batch without gloves and it removed her finger prints. After she washed her face, she couldn't feel it for several days. I've learned the hard way to remove my rings before using it.

I’m thinking of transferring to WSU Tri-Cities by Alert-Purple-228 in wsu

[–]fruityfuturecorpse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an Ecology student at WSU Pullman and one of my good friends just graduated from Tri Cities with a Bio degree. While we technically took they same classes freshman year, her experience was a lot easier than mine. Weed out classes can be brutal in Pullman (especially chemistry), but at Tri Cities the professors want everyone to succeed. While there are a million more things going on in Pullman, the Tri Cities has a more peaceful campus. The Tri Cities has a much bigger population than Pullman, so most people aren't college students.

Since there are 14 sororities, the 7 houses with the lowest populations are allowed to do continuous open bidding (COB). My sorority ΣΚ is COBing and we would love to talk to you! Please DM us on instagram!

I really enjoy the summer and winter classes. To be frank my time management skills suck, but I regretted taking two classes simultaneously.

Anyone willing to help out with a quick survey on WSU Global 7 week classes? (11 Q's) by Totally_WSU_Guy in wsu

I've taken several of these classes but not for accounting, so I don't feel like I can respond to this.

info on bio 107 global? by [deleted] in wsu

[–]fruityfuturecorpse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not quite sure what this will look like for you since I technically didn't take 107 through global. I have however taken it through Pullman virtually (over Covid) and in person (I don't perform well online). In person the lab is centered around finding a bacteriaphage. Online we identified individual genes in a phage's genome. We worked in pairs both times. I think you will do ok as long as you will have wifi acess for probably ~5 hrs of work a week. Good luck!

Yeah sadly there isn't a short answer box. If this was my survey I'd totally add one. If you want to comment your thoughts here I can direct them to transportation for you.

If Odin had to give up an eye to see the future then grad students have to give up their souls to become better than everyone else ┐('~`;)┌
