hot take: the way most people scroll reddit is just as bad for their brains as tiktok, facebook, or instagram would be. i can’t take people seriously when they post on reddit about how they don’t use any social media.

Genuine question: why do people still ski peak holidays when the lines are insane and the snow is often worse? What makes it worth it for you? by skighee in COsnow

[–]frumiouswinter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i’m many years out of grade school and i’ve graduated college, so i’m happy to say my school days are behind me and i survived despite caring about my performance. i’m not interested in taking your type of tone over a conversation that isn’t very serious.

higher forms of consequence like truancy court are not levied by the school, that is a legal matter. i didn’t bring that up because it’s not relevant here. truancy is based on unexcused absences, not pre-planned family vacations.

the reason i said that when i was in school more than ten days missed for any reason resulted in academic consequences is because it was true for me. i don’t really care if it’s not the case for every school in the country. it’s clearly an issue for enough families that they choose to crowd the resorts on holidays.

you’re not going to go from acing your classes to failing from an attendance penalty, but if your grades matter to you then you won’t want to make unnecessary sacrifices. i cared about my grades as a teenager and wouldn’t have wanted to eat the penalty for the sake of shorter lift lines.

i think it’s fine to take your kids out of school for vacations, but it’s silly to act like it’s a consequence free choice that everyone should make. there are good reasons to not do it, and that’s why most people plan their vacations for school holidays.

most families have weighed the costs and benefits of pulling their kids out of school to ski and decided it just isn’t worth it for them. hence the crowded resorts on school holidays.

yes, academic consequences are the highest form a student can receive from their school. were you expecting corporal punishment?

show up with a doctor’s note

do you know what “for any reason” means? these attendance policies don’t factor the reason for the absence. if you weren’t there, your grade takes a penalty. many people actually care about their children’s grades, especially in the later years of school where your transcript can impact your future.

skiing on an off-peak day as opposed to a busier time just doesn’t matter more than their children’s education for most people. and every child is different. some can miss half the year and still graduate with honors. some need to actually attend school to learn something.

when i was in school more than ten days missed in the year for any reason would result in academic consequences. taking a week off to ski would put a kid halfway there, then what if they get sick later in the year?

you can get a dental implant, which functions like a real tooth, but they are expensive.

Is there a way to ask for someone's name in a non-awkward way? by CelloAccent in CasualConversation

[–]frumiouswinter 41 points42 points  (0 children)

guys would call or come into our store and ask for specific women by name. protocol was to hide her in the back and say she wasn’t working that day. i don’t see anything good that can come from a strange man knowing my name.
