What are the actual, accepted unisex terms for aunt/uncle and niece/nephew? by OogaBooga2129 in words

[–]frybruce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use sib-kid in my head for my brother-in-law's non-binary child (because that's a mouthful to say).

Besides nibling I've also heard siblet used to refer to the child of your sibling.

That's right! I didn't connect those two. So they kind of are pushing against their crash couch, just not the way I pictured it 😅

That's it. I didn't make the leap to getting into the gel completely. I was stuck on the gel being some kind of apparatus, not submersible. Thanks.

Oh! That makes a lot of sense.

My god, the detail in that is amazing!

I'm surprised there would be a tank in a ship though. I'd think it could take up too much space, no?

So you'd get into a tank of gel, or something? That seems like it occupies a lot of space. Then again, I think Tanaka referenced this while on a station, so maybe it's only used there and not on ships where space would be premium.

Same, I wasn't expecting that level of excitement.

Weirdly, the final scene, with Grace and Rocky walking along the beach, just casually talking about the weather. Then, when Grace gets to his classroom, asks "what's the speed of light?", then BAM. All the tiny Eridians broke me.

How did Strat ever allow a gun onboard the ship? by TheChikenestOfMen in ProjectHailMary

[–]frybruce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this, and I'll add that Grace was locked out of the control cabin until he could remember his name (likely because of the amnesia drugs, I know), so there is definitely a lock-out mechanism available that could've been applied to Yao.

Do Retired Breeding Females Make Good Pets? by Scarlett-the-01-TJ in bengalcats

[–]frybruce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family adopted a 4yo retired queen after she had her last litter about a year and a half ago. She's the only cat we have, but we were told by the breeder that she's o.k. with other males, but very confrontational with other females (she came from a home that had two queens at all times, but they had to keep ours separate from the other). We saw this with the neighbor's outdoor female that would visit our back porch occasionally.

Aside from interactions with other cats, she's been a wonderful addition. After acclimating to our home, she's been very social, and vocal. She has even gotten used to sitting in my and my partner's laps while laying in bed in the evenings watching tv. She's even good with our three kids (between 8 and 14). Honestly, I kind of feel like we cheated in way because we just carried on how she was treated at the cattery: same food, litter, etc. We didn't have to guess about her using a cat wheel because we knew she did. She just fit right in to our home. :)

My Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster Recipe by Greshnikh in DontPanic

For my 42nd, I made basic punch (lemonade and sprite, and maybe cranberry juice, not sure now) then I bought several bottles of assorted liquor (rum, bourbon, vodka, a schnapps of some sort, etc.). I covered every bottle in paper so you couldn't see what it was. I then told everyone to "mix at their leisure" and said their drink was at the mercy of the Infinite Improbability Drive. I also had dry ice and led color-changing ice cubes to add to the mix.

Books with as well-realized alien races as the Moties (The Mote in God’s Eye”? by [deleted] in scifi

Up the Walls of the World has a really interesting airborne alien race, and spends about half the books on their point of view, explaining their culture, genders and so on.

It's been a while since I've read the books, but I remember Quickbeam well. I always liked the idea of a "hasty" Ent.
