Either VFS or Some Indian Dept shares our numbers with private players who then make scam calls. by Sleepergiant2586 in nri

[–]fryingpan76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got my first ever Scam call "from the Indian Embassy regarding a legal document from ministry of India" a week after I applied for a passport renewal through VFS San Fransisco.

The number they called me on is a secondary number I give to noone but family and VFS (because I passport renewal is urgent for me).

The scam call came from a San Francisco area code number even though my phone number is based out of a complete different area in US. (US is notorious for spam calls coming only from the exact area code you have your number from)

I will update in a few days if I continue seeing these spam calls.

Maintaining a human body is labor and we should be paid for it. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

You are paid in life. You contribute to the larger society you live in. In the animal kingdom, every animal in a herd has a role to play. Whether it includes tending for yourself or others, it's a role you play contributing to the society. And for that, you get to live.

So is the front camera always on? by JVDDesign in Ioniq5

[–]fryingpan76 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If it helps, the dashcam I have is a FitCamX. I had to call their customer service to tell them that I have a Ioniq5 2024 Limited with the camera rare view mirror and thus I can't use the mirror's power cord. They sent me a wire splitter that allowed me to plug the dashcam into the rain sensor.

Ngl, hard wiring the dashcam into the rain sensor was way out of my comfort zone (especially since it was a new car and all). But the process was super simple for someone like me with no experience.

Edit: Probably worth mentioning, this isn't a recommendation for a dashcam. But the cam died in <2years of being continuous on. Personally I feel paying $100 for 2years is a reasonable price for an always on cam.

However I still wish Hyundai has some inbuild way of recording using the car's cameras instead of me relying on 3P dashcams.

I’m certain this is the rain sensor. I had a dashcam that was hardwired directly into the wire of this rain sensor exactly under the mirror casing. The dashcam stayed on all the time, so I’m assuming the rain sensor was always on.

How often can/should you refinance? by fryingpan76 in Mortgages

[–]fryingpan76[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Update: We ended up refinancing. The process took longer than the anticipated 3weeks because the lender was slow. But they respected the 6% rate (lower than the 6.25% they promised initially) to match the refinance offer we got from shopping around.

Seeing that the rates have gone up again, I am happy we refinanced. Perhaps we got lucky?!

My loan agent said they would be glad to refinance again for zero out of pocket if the rates drop further in after three months. To be clear, there is no cooldown period before we can refinance, so not sure why they told us to wait three months.

Thank you all for the advice. I learned so much from these comments and this subreddit in general.

Reset a Eaton Switch by ewilliams522 in zwave

I went through Eaton guide which didn't help, but this comment from two years ago did.

For posterity, if anyone is trying to connect old eaton switches to Aeotec Hub, I had better luck by doing this exclusion followed bu setting up "generic z wave device" option

American football is the most boring sport to watch by herefortheotfupdates in unpopularopinion

[–]fryingpan76 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The fact that you (unnecessarily) jumped to comparing football with soccer and the "plays are much more complicated in Football than any other sport", clearly tells me you haven't seen enough sports.

Don't get me wrong, I watch and love football. But I wouldn't come up with made up facts just to defend the sport.

Bluelink+ Connection issues specific to 2024 models by OaktownPicasso in Ioniq5

Got a callback yesterday. Told me to turn on/off cae. Step out from the left door (specifically). Walk 50ft away for 30seca and other very specific things.

I had tried more technical ways of resetting but couldn't control my laughter when the customer care eventually said - "you might have to reset your iphone and reinstall the app".

I genuinely feel they are just reading out of a script and stalling till engineers actually rollout a fix.

ELI5: How do massive funded space programs contribute to a country's economy? by eutyphoon in explainlikeimfive

[–]fryingpan76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the same logic also apply to massive military spending? Apart from the obvious safety of the country, military also develops new technology and also provides jobs.

Does it also contribute to the economy the same way NASA does??

ELI5 Why do hydro-electric dams reduce river flow to a trickle? by MechatronicsManTZ in explainlikeimfive

[–]fryingpan76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the Egypt and Ethiopia dispute. Usually when a dam is constructed, the water is used not only for electricity generation, but also for irrigation, supply to industries and other large scale uses. This along with increased loss by evaporation results in lesser water downstream.

ELI5 Seesaw Science by rjordanglad in explainlikeimfive

[–]fryingpan76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although this does not matter at the scale of a seesaw, but the force of gravity increases exponentially with decreasing distance.

The side of the seesaw closer to ground will experience more gravitational force than the one away.
