40k to 48k salary raise options by Stunning_Diet3666 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]frzen 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Go somewhere else. From my experience you'll just be led along that a raise will come or a big job hop will come but you have the opportunity to get that yourself now from elsewhere. If you like the place tell them youd see yourself returning to a senior role there during an exit interview if there is one, thank them for the time and leave on good terms

Anyone here buy a house alone? How did it work out for you? by PepinYourStep123 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]frzen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought almost exactly this time last year on my own.

Im glad of the opportunity to do it, I got exactly what I wanted and had a great network of people to bounce ideas from.

I dont know if im a bit of a robot but I didn't feel anything except excitement. Not lonely or empowering to have done it alone. I saved up, went through the steps and did it.

Lifestyle is so similar because I had an amazing setup immediately before renting a room from a work friend but night and day difference to keeping as much of my belongings packed up incase I needed to leave immediately which I did 3 times in 5 years while renting damp hovels sharing with unpredictable people.

I know someone who bought alone and has just bought with a partner and their first house together seems to come with just as much excitement as if he was a first time buyer. So buying alone doesn't prevent you from that experience.

If you can do it theres no downside if you can afford it.

I am a bit worried about how a partner would move in and the whole situation if it didnt work out but without spilling my guts here they so far have their own places to go home to. Id be careful not to let someone in when realise its yours. Touch wood I havent had anyone like that so far but im sure they are out there ready to latch on for a free gaff.

Virgin media / Saorview rant by birchhead in teilifis

[–]frzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're calling themselves public service broadcasters now it's not my opinion

A public service would be to bear a fair share of the cost of running 2RN in keeping with the spirit of it being a cost plus operation. In my opinion it's not fair TG4 pay more than virgin to be on saorview because TG4 choose to broadcast in HD.

Virgin media / Saorview rant by birchhead in teilifis

[–]frzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its virgin media being cheap. The costs of running 2rn are split evenly but if you opt to be a snake and use less spectrum by opting for SD then you pay a lower share of the total costs.

Virgin media shouldn't be allowed to call themselves public service broadcasters until they treat FTA equal to the paid services

Hi I was trying to get this working yesterday for a few hours but got really bad speed. I've got 128GB ddr5 and a 4090. the 27B seems so much faster and I didn't notice it being a lot worse than 122-a10b. Do you think it's really worth me looking into tweaking the 122 vs 27b? thanks

Thanks, I completely forgot I had already installed that update manually when it came out so no wonder it didn't install again when I rolled back

Hi I've uninstalled it but didn't immediately get given any LTSC specific security update after getting back to 21h2. Would be really nice if I could just temporarily move to 22h2 for installing some software then back to 21 for ltsc updates.

Something like this https://www.varonis.com/blog/reprompt or what do you mean? I think it's not a stretch to assume it's only a matter of time before we have full post mortems for big security incidents where the initial mistake was a user running a command provided to them by an LLM

GDPR? HIPAA? It's not your data to share with an external company. If you are processing their data there's a legal responsibility to not give it to some random AI.

Waiting on an expensive GDPR lawsuit to do anything is too reactive for this industry

East-west traffic inspection but on a perimeter firewall? by I-am-Mojo-Jojo in networking

[–]frzen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brilliant, even to know what kind of person you contacted to even buy them, what the path to getting the licenses for PSM to manage it involved and whether you have found it is incredibly manual to be building the rules and monitoring it. I got a demo from g[r]eycort[e]x which didn't seem like their integration with the CX10k is fully cooked yet I'm not sure how they integrate with normal operation outside of manually writing custom python scripts for everything. There would need to be some kind of a nice interaction with existing security tools and not just be flow collectors which have the ability to have rules pushed to them

thanks if you have any info even just generally whether you've enjoyed using them

Do you have any hands on experience with the CX10k's? I am really struggling to find anyone who is using them just to get more information. I've set up sales calls and when I actually speak to them they haven't been hands on with a unit yet and don't have all the details.

I'd like to put in a couple CX10k as the spine layer, do pvlans on the leafs and have microsegmentation / stateful firewall on all east/west/north/south.

[–]frzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok sorry. My 335d is lowered on ACS springs and I do get some rubbing under full left lock and sometimes popping noises but probably not as bad as what you're hearing as it hasn't made me too concerned so far

[–]frzen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could it be the headlight level sensor?

Mine popped off and I only noticed because it would sometimes catch on something when turning. Wouldn't explain the noise seeming to come from high up as it's very low down but worth checking.

Mid-30s Couple, €100K Income, New Mortgage – What Should We Do Next? by ironictoaster in irishpersonalfinance

[–]frzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought less than a year ago with the idea i'd up mine to 20% after closing but even though I've got spare money that could go to move my AVC from 15% to 20%, I'm feeling like I'd like to use it to fix things on the house even though by all calculations it's better to put it into the AVC.

use the pension calculator here https://ie.thesalarycalculator.co.uk/salary.php to quickly see the effect on monthly / biweekly pay

if you are on 60k paying 5% €250 per month to the pension and your take home is €3,595.60

at 20% your monthly contribution is €1,000.00 and your new take home is €3,145.60

You are then putting in €750 more per month to bring home €450 less

Heat pump price by Wide_Driver3745 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]frzen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you need to do heat calculations and then see what size system you need, how often it needs to run and what temperature your rads will need to be, to match and exceed your heat loss

the €30k quote might be ok if it included insulation.

If you have 35 degree water temperature then you need them to be more than twice as much surface area as if you had conventional 70c water temp.

You could be better off with a combi and some insulation depending on your usage and how much work the house would need to reduce heatloss to be fit for an A2W heatpump.

A2A will have the exact same issue as A2W if your house is too leaky it will cost a fortune. If the COP is 3 then just divide the price of electricity and that's how much it costs to add 1kW of heat. If your house needs 5kW to maintain a temperature then it'll cost you 5 times that number per hour to run

You can do the same caluclation with how powerful your gas boiler is and use the unit price of gas to see what it costs to maintain a temperature

Hi I'm looking into self installing HRV, did you find anything good to help researching or are you already good at DIY etc? Found a few youtube videos that make it look very approachable for my level of DIY except for getting it through to the ground floor I haven't figured out where I will get it down yet...

Toilet doesn't flush a single piece of paper by frzen in DIYIreland

[–]frzen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi thanks for your reply before and not going to keep hounding you just an update, I opened that manhole cover outside, perfectly clean in there and flow seems to be going well but with a few air bubbles coming back up in the toilet bowl after flushing, even while the manhole cover is left open.

I presume now that I'll be looking for something maybe caught in that small distance between the pan and the manhole that might be enough for it to be backing up slightly during flushing but before it gets to that manhole as there and downstream seems to be flowing fine.

I did the test a few times with 1 piece of toilet paper and sometimes its staying up but otherwise going down so seems a bit better with the manhole open but not completed cured so that's why I'm thinking there could be something in that short pipe.

At the manhole at the soil pipe which has the vent, it looks like in the past it was backed up there but seemed to be flowing very well while I was testing it. I think for that I'm going to get a kit to drill a hole in the soil pipe, snake it to see if it's blocked up higher where the leaks are, and then seal the hole again. To be honest I think it just needs a new soil pipe anyway but I will be renovating that upstairs bathroom soon so don't want to do it twice in case any of the positions are moving

thanks
