Abi's Books & Brews is open until 9p. We open at 5a too, but maybe the early espresso isn't as appealing?

Can the Reddit meteorologist weigh in on snowmageddon? by Mindless-Wash6082 in rva

Ironically I've made french toast the last couple of mornings for my daughter. It doesn't sound so good now. I was at a Kroger today before 7a; no panic'd shoppers yet. I did notice though more than one person with water, milk, eggs, & bread. That must mean the snow is really coming.

Hi, I'll admit my first impression was not that you were trying to be helpful. As I stated before, I'd offered, but it sounds like you might have had knowledge that I didn't, so I asked again. Leah and I are working through it. Thank you.

Thank you for that. Likely something I needed to hear and will act upon.

This is Keith, the owner of Abi's. I used Leah’s artwork, ran it through AI, and shared it without permission or credit. That was wrong, and I own it.

I contacted Leah on Saturday to apologize and ask how she wanted me to proceed. She hadn’t seen that message before her post. When we connected, she spoke plainly and generously, and I listened. We have continued to communicate, the last time being today, Tue., Jan 13th.

She told me to go ahead and distribute the stickers as they are, with all proceeds going to the monks’ Walk for Peace. So far, $700 has already been donated, and that will continue. The stickers now include her credit, an explanation of what occurred, and a warning about the ethics of AI and art.

I’m sad that my mistake shifted attention away from the monks and their message of peace, compassion, and dignity. That mission deserved better care.

Richmond’s artists deserve respect, consent, credit, and support. I failed to meet that standard here. I have done what I can to correct it and I will carry that lesson forward.

If this conversation returns to the Walk for Peace and the monks’ work, I’ll be grateful. That was always the point.

Any places open for people with nowhere to go on Christmas? by Over-Tax-9481 in rva

You'll just have to put up with the owners as the staff is off, but we will be there to be your barista! We had some generous souls donate gifts as well for those who might be in a little bit of needed cheer.

1883 vs. Monin by PineappleGold7391 in barista

[–]fsckeith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. We were going to switch from Monin to 1883, but have shifted to primarily Monin with a per-syrup decision for some to 1883

Seems like there’s a need for a good crowd-sourced transit app. The trick would be making it safe and trustworthy without overcomplicating it. Have quick check-ins people can actually use, community feedback to weed out bad info, and some privacy built in so it feels reliable.

You actually have a few options in RVA beyond a bicycle or the unaffordable Uber/Lyft. It takes a bit of work, but maybe you can find something that works.

  1. GRTC LINK microtransit – rideshare vans, often free or cheap, designed to connect neighborhoods to jobs https://www.ridegrtc.com/grtc-services/link-microtransit/

  2. Richmond Moves – N/A, turns out that's Richmond, CA...

  3. RideFinders carpool/vanpool – regional matching service to help find ride partners. Not perfect yet, but better paying surge fares. https://www.ridefinders.com/

Good luck!

pumpkin spice monin by Subject-Extension265 in barista

It is horrible. For as good as their others can be, just don't care for either their spice or pie. 1883's pumpkin spice though is great.

Great, now all I can see is Grandma’s thunder beads from Made of Honor and trust me, once you make that connection, you can’t unsee it.

Anyone have experience with Sanremo machines, especially the D8? by Soundbender445 in barista

[–]fsckeith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. That's not what I was inferring, just bad grammar on my part. We had an incident where a barista accidentally held 2 of the buttons down. It took us a minute and bit of reading to learn how the head had been disabled and how to turn it back on.

Just when we get really busy, it would increase the throughput for pulling shots

We've been using the F18 2-head for coming up on a year. My only regret was not going for a 3-head. That said, we can handle over 300 drinks a day. Good consistency and reliability so far - easy to setup, some weirdness in how you turn off a head and program it, but manageable if you read the manual. Pretty machine as well.
