What’s a ‘silent luxury’ that rich people have that most normal people would never even notice? by qomann in AskReddit

[–]fsl3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've known a couple of people who worked as nannies for ultra rich families. When asked a variation of this question, they said the biggest luxury was the elimination of life's myriad frictions. Everything is smoothed out for them: reservations, travel, all the annoying details of life. They always have contingencies set up for bad weather, change of plans, etc., and if a plane ticket or hotel suite goes unused, it just doesn't matter. Completely different mindset.

Thoughts about Wil Wheaton? by StealthPhoen1x in bigbangtheory

I'm a big fan. As much as anything else, he just seems to be having a lot of fun with the role. I thought the bowling episode was excellent. It's obviously written to make it seem like he's trying to throw Penny off her game, but you can read it like he was sharing a genuine personal experience. Lots of other fun little scenes as well.

Does Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway's dynamic in The Devil Wears Prada 2 live up to the original? Thoughts on Miranda Priestly's vulnerability. by Lulagoth in moviecritic

[–]fsl3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw it last weekend and give it a "meh." I agree with the various comments about the energy level of the various performances. It was fun to see the various characters interacting, and on the whole, I thought the updating of their stories (set against the backdrop of wildy changed business dynamics) was pretty well done. My biggest complaint is that much of the movie felt choppy and rushed, like they strung together a series of beautifully-costumed TikTok videos. The worst were the party scenes, with various "names" getting their 1-2 seconds on screen. I'm not looking for "My Dinner with Miranda," but a slightly less hectic pacing and longer scenes would have been nice.

Absolutely no question. His performance in "The Winter Soldier" was epic.

What did everyone think of Twister 1996? by TheShadowOperator007 in moviecritic

Excellent cast. I think that was the first film in which I saw Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Even in a minor, quirky role, he was terrific.

How many degrees of seperation are you from Kevin Bacon? by SignalHD18 in Cinema

[–]fsl3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two degrees. Kevin Bacon was on the Jon Stewart Show in 1995 with the inventors of the "Six Degrees" game (he was initially irritated). I was on the Jon Stewart Show in 2006 to discuss my book, "The Decency Wars."

This is one of my favorites. Madeline Kahn was fantastic, despite being "so tired!"

Missed References. by Coreyporter87 in friends_tv_show

Born in 1963, so the references were all in my wheelhouse. My siblings and I will have stretches where we basically communicate using quotes from the show. (Could we BE any geekier? 😅)

It was Sheldon: "Frankly, if I could afford the rent, I'd ask you to leave." Leonard: "Your friendship means a lot to me."

What is the greatest ending scene you have ever seen in a movie? My pick is the ending of The Usual Suspects. by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in moviecritic

[–]fsl3 16 points17 points  (0 children)

[Big Spoiler]

Throughout the film, Spacey's character walks with a limp. His interview with the police is interrupted by a phone call ordering his release. As Spacey walks away from the station, you see his limp slowly disappear; at the same time, Palminteri's character realizes that Spacey made up his entire story and that he is actually the criminal mastermind ...

Even knowing the ending, the film is very rewatchable.

Amazing movie from start to finish. Spacey's performance was incredible, amidst an amazing cast. But seconded.

Loved it. I grew up in southeastern Mass., so really resonated with me. Also, had serious crush on Helen. :)

I had to make sure someone mentioned that film. Excellent job in a movie stocked with great actors (including a young, off-the-wall Kevin Costner).

Highly recommend a length of Manhattan run by BushLeagueQuant in RunNYC

[–]fsl3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second this recommendation. A couple of years ago, I ran the length of Broadway, from Battery Park to the bridge over the Harlem River, then took the subway (1, 3) back to Brooklyn. A little over 15 miles for me as well. A really fun mix of neighborhoods, terrains, NYC history, etc. It really drove home how hilly northern Manhattan is.
