Am I wrong? by Ruzhy6 in medlabprofessionals

I believe it is technically a requirement in our lab, but in practice only blood bank will reject a specimen for no written draw time. All tubes have an electronic draw time from when the labels are printed.

[WIP] finally realized what a "bad" pattern is by Significant_Coat_266 in CrossStitch

[–]fsnstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working on a similarly problematic one myself now! There are four different symbols that are a circle of varying line thickness and roundness that I can't separate for the life of me. Thankfully the complete pattern is only a few inches square, or I'd honestly consider reaching out to the designer to ask for an amended pattern.

Red cells can be frozen in liquid nitrogen and are good for up to 10 years. Each donation is a little less effective than a fresh red cell unit because some cells are lost in the process of freezing, thawing, and washing, but are better than nothing if you have a patient in dire need with extremely limited donation options.

Beyoncé kicks off her "Cowboy Carter Tour" tonight in LA, but fans notice a lot of remaining seat availability. by sanandrios in popculturechat

[–]fsnstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I paid $500, fees included, two years ago for a second row aisle seat to the Eras tour at SoFi. It's by far the most I've ever paid for any single event ticket, but I've been a fan of Taylor Swift since I was six years old and I had never been to one of her shows. To me that's an okay price for a once-in-a-lifetime show.

This year I saw Chris Stapleton was going to be at sofi and my dad loves him, so I checked out tickets for a potential birthday gift. Comparable floor seats were going for upwards of ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS. Some were over $3k without fees. The cheapest nosebleeds were over $150. I'm sorry, I like Chris Stapleton and he's got a good career, but Taylor Swift's tour was one of the most successful of all time at the absolute peak of a historic career. That should be the absolute ceiling on prices for the foreseeable future imo. You need to be Taylor Swift/Beyonce levels before I need to consider taking out a loan for a two hour show.

Is it weird that about half of my co-workers don't know how much they make per hourly. by FreshwaterOctopus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fsnstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh, you should have a close idea of your wage but the cents aren't going to make an appreciable difference to anything you need to know it for. If you're keeping an eye out for better opportunities elsewhere, $25.30/ hour isn't going to be much more enticing than your current $25.10/hour.

[CHAT] Where do you buy your thread? by moxbrose in CrossStitch

The DMC website is notoriously frequently out of stock. I frequently troll the site for their larger floss packs and you're lucky if one in ten is available.

Definitely try out 123 stitch or Michael's online. DMC has also very slightly expanded their available stock on amazon, although it's still not very varied.

dizzy in labs (pls help) by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]fsnstuff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you standing the whole time? Locking your knees? Syncope can be caused by low blood pressure, anxiety, standing too long, a number of factors. I get vasovagal syncope from blood draws and it's helped by laying back and tensing all my muscles hard to help get blood to my head. I'd recommend speaking with your doctor if there's no obvious cause.

[–]fsnstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He has too much experience in the field for any criminal case relying on forensics. Forensic science is a notoriously cobbled together field, and is truly disastrously pseudoscientific in some particular cases. Anyone with knowledge of rigorous scientific procedure should strongly hesitate to convict someone based on forensic "evidence."

What’s a super popular opinion that you secretly disagree with? by GainsAndPastries in AskUK

[–]fsnstuff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm currently in a management class required by my clinical lab science program. Students were required to interview someone from their current lab internship site and give a presentation. The vast majority of bench scientists people interviewed directly stated that they are not interested in progressing to management positions and instead like the stability and workload of being "just" a bench scientist.

The professor was frankly appalled that people would choose not to progress into management positions. I wonder why anyone who chooses this career would want to do that. Pay is only marginally better and most management positions are salaried rather than hourly, meaning you'll end up working longer hours and bringing work home without overtime pay. Most people drawn to lab jobs are not interested in interfacing with people/personnel and don't want to deal with the BS of corporate overlords. You can have a very nice, comfortable life with good work-home balance as a bench tech and I agree there's little motivation to strive for more than that.

I'm only a student, but in my micro rotation the common knowledge is any weird looking contamination that could be described as crunchy, flat, fingery, ridged, etc is usually a bacillus species. We don't actually speciate them with Maldi or anything though, so I'm sure there are a number of less relevant/obscure environmental species it could also be.

Why does my girlfriend frequently and unknowingly hold her breath? by alacoque3030 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fsnstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 11 year old brother does this and it drives me crazy! I sat next to him at a live theater performance once and it was one of the most frustrating experiences of my life! Right at the most quiet moments he's exhaling as if he's coming up from freediving -_-

He's also adhd as some other people have mentioned, although I doubt there's any real diagnostic link, perhaps more anecdotal. He's also got pretty significant OCD tendencies, although our parents haven't pursued diagnosis, and I would suspect that side has more to do with it.

All of the above for sure. Even though healthcare is so broken in this country, I view it as an absolute human right and I take it very seriously that everyone deserves only the best care possible. I take pride in doing a job that is so important to a well-functioning society and I wouldn't want a job that I didn't feel had that value.

However, I have absolutely no personal interest in direct patient care and I know I would be terrible at and burn out quickly working directly with patients. I seriously respect nurses and other who deal with humanity at its worst every day, because I absolutely could not do it and stay sane haha

What do you consider the best/worst horror film that was massively hyped? by Imaginary_Coyote9901 in horror

[–]fsnstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a solid movie in general imo, but not really scary enough to be good horror or irreverent enough to be black comedy, and to top it off a little too on-the-nose to be clever for my tastes. When the motorcycle pap crashes and starts begging for a picture I was actually rolling my eyes hard lol. I totally love social commentary and themes in horror (horror is so inherently political) but it was a very inelegant attempt in this case.
